Jess Carter admits she was ‘scared' to play Euro 2025 final after racist abuse

England defender Jess Carter admitted she was 'scared' to play in the Euro 2025 final after suffering racist abuse during the tournament as she thanked her teammates for their support. Carter returned to Sarina Wiegman 's starting line-up for the final against Spain and was the only change the England manager decided to make before the Euro 2025 final in Basel. The 27-year-old Carter revealed after England's quarter-final win over Sweden that she had received racist abuse on social media throughout the tournament. She dropped to the bench for the semi-final against Italy, even though Wiegman said Carter was ready to play if needed, but she returned to start the final against Spain. And while Carter was excellent alongside Leah Williamson in defence, as the Lionesses won their second major trophy, Carter revealed she had been apprehensive to play in the final. Carter told ITV: "I was super scared to play today for the first time in my life, but when I woke up and I saw my team, and the support I had and the belief I had from my team-mates, my family and my manager. I knew I could just come out and give it my all. That's all you can do." Carter thanked the support she had received from the England fans and said it gave her the 'courage' to play after suffering racist abuse during the tournament. 'The support I felt from the fans was incredible,' Carter explained. 'I can't thank them enough because without the fans, my team-mates and my family, I don't know if I'd have every had the courage to back on the pitch and play again. 'I'm not normally someone who struggles with the hate they received because everyone is going to have their opinion. But this tournament has been tough and I wasn't sure I'd be able to get back on the pitch and do me. "Everyone of those fans, I'm not ever going to be able to show my thanks enough, but they have been incredible, and I hope they will continue to cheer on the Lionesses every single day." England manager Wiegman explained that starting Carter over Esme Morgan, who had also impressed during the semi-final win over Italy, was a tactical decision but said she had 'belief' in Carter to deliver the performance required. 'Well, first of all, it says something about the team that we can make tactical decision,' Wiegman said. 'I've said a couple of times now that I was really happy, before the tournament, with my squad, and that we had players in the same position that can bring different things, and that was true with Esme and Jess. 'Italy was a different game than Spain and we felt we needed Jess now in the starting line-up, exactly for the reasons that you said, the fight and the duels, she can play, and she showed of course that she is a great personality. 'She was ready to perform, also against Italy, but that was a tactical decision and now we've made a tactical decision. I had all the belief in her and she had the belief in herself, that's the most important thing, that she could contribute to the team and you can tell that the team trusted her too.'

Footy legend who was left paralysed from the neck down in horror accident gets some huge career news

A champion NRL coach who became paralysed from the neck down in a shocking surf accident has a new lease on life after being recruited by the St George Illawarra Dragons. Former NRL coach Daniel Anderson suffered a freak bodysurfing accident in 2023 that left him an incomplete quadriplegic. He was on a family holiday at Soldiers Beach on the NSW central coast when a wave dumped him head-first, causing catastrophic spinal injuries and cardiac arrest. Off-duty paramedics on the beach saved his life and he was airlifted to Royal North Shore Hospital. 'I was dragged from the water unresponsive and then went into cardiac arrest,' Anderson said at the time. 'I'm very lucky the paramedics were there. I was obviously in a bad way. If they weren't there, who knows how it would have finished up.' Anderson now requires help with basic tasks but is regaining small movements through intensive rehab. Despite his condition, he continued working for the Sydney Roosters as head of recruitment. Now, Anderson has received good news with the St George Illawarra Dragons revealing he would take on the position of Head of Recruitment and Pathways. 'We are excited to welcome Daniel to the Dragons,' Dragons CEO Tim Watsford said. 'We undertook an extensive search that crossed the game, broader sporting industry and varying stakeholders. 'Daniel was a standout with regard to credentials, cultural fit and an eye to support the coaching team and wider football department in delivering success through talent identification. 'Recruitment and Pathways for the Dragons is a broad, wide-reaching and integral role. 'With two new teams entering the competition and the premiership never being closer, it's important to secure key football appointments now that generate momentum as we build a robust future. Anderson also steered the Parramatta Eels to an unlikely NRL Grand Final in 2009 before falling to the Melbourne Storm 'Daniel possesses the knowledge, skill set and temperament to implement long-lasting systems to develop, identify and recruit talent to succeed at the top level.' As an NRL coach, Daniel Anderson guided the Warriors to their first-ever finals series in 2001 and a historic Grand Final appearance in 2002. He also led the Eels to the 2009 Grand Final and enjoyed strong success in the Super League. During his time with St Helens, Anderson won back-to-back Challenge Cups in 2006 and 2007, reached three consecutive Super League Grand Finals, lifted the trophy in 2006, and capped it off with a 2007 World Club Challenge victory over the Broncos. Dragons fans have hailed the recruitment of Anderson, who spent the last six years at the Sydney Roosters. 'Potentially one of the best signings in the joint venture history,' one fan posted. 'Daniel Anderson has a great history of identifying young talent in particular in recent years at the Roosters. 'Look at how many young guns the Roosters have debuted in the NRL in recent years.' Another added: 'I'm absolutely thrilled to have someone with your expertise at the club.' 'Wishing you all the best as you implement systems to develop, identify, and recruit top talent to help get the Dragons back to the top of the NRL and playing finals footy and potentially grand finals, including winning them.'

AFL fans have been puzzled by a sound on TV broadcasts for 45 years - and now the mystery has finally been solved

For almost five decades, AFL fans have been left puzzled by a strange siren call that has echoed around footy grounds during match broadcasts - and now the mystery has finally been solved. While the NRL has the phantom siren, AKA Gosh Daher, who has fooled footy fans, players and even officials by mimicking the fulltime hooter, the AFL has the Whoo-Whoo Lady. Wherever Collingwood plays, fans can hear her call every time the opposition is trying to work the ball out of pressure following a Pies behind. Now her identity has been revealed as she explained why she has been making the booming sound for more than 40 years. 'My name's Leanne, I'm known as the siren lady, the whoo-whoo lady or the ambulance lady,' the Magpies fanatic said on TikTok. 'I've been doing it for 45 years. Collingwood superfan Leanne (pictured) has revealed as the voice behind the strange siren sound, which she uses to put the opposition off their game 'It's for when the players on our side kick a point [a behind], and then the opposition is kicking back in. 'Because it's to try and distract them, put them off. The players have told me they love it.' While the players may love it, there are plenty of opposition supporters who can't stand it. There is even a Reddit thread on annoying fans and Leanne and her siren sound is at the very top. 'At all Collingwood games in Victoria - and most away games - one of the cheer squad members makes the loudest, most annoying siren-like sound until the moment the opposition player has disposed of the ball,' a footy fan posted. 'It's one of those little things that is close to the most annoying part of any game.' Others commented on the TikTok post, accusing the diehard Collingwood supporter of ruining the spectacle for others. 'No consideration for anyone nearby regardless of who they barracking for,' one posted. 'I wish I never heard it because now I hear it all the time,' another wrote. Leanne has heard all the hate before, though, and it doesn't faze her. 'I don't even realise I am doing it now, I just get up and do it,' she said. 'I'm sorry for the people that hate it and I know it's very loud. 'But it something that I just can't, when I come to think about it, trying to stop. I can't.' Now that her identity has been revealed, Leanne is collecting new fans of her distinctive sound. 'See, now I know the reason behind it, it's less annoying. There's a purpose and a passion there. Generally only hear it on TV for Marvel games but I'll listen out for it now I know the reason,' one fan commented. 'This fan's energy is absolutely contagious! You can feel the passion radiating through their cheers, truly bringing the game to life,' added another.
