Whoopi Goldberg absent from The View after Iran comments

Daily Mail24-06-2025
Whoopi Goldberg has been missing from The View since last week after her outrageous comments comparing life as a black American to living in Iran . The Oscar-winning actress sparked a firestorm during a segment on Wednesday in which co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin praised American freedoms, saying, 'The U.S. in 2025 is not as bad as Iran in 2025.' Goldberg, who is worth an estimated $60 million, immediately cut in: 'Not if you're black.'
'Listen, I'm sorry. They used to just keep hanging black people,' she remarked, telling Griffin 'there's no way I can make you understand it.' 'It is the same.' The comments earned widespread condemnation, including calls for Goldberg to be fired.
Goldberg would go on to appear on Thursday's episode of The View, before being bashed by Bill Maher on his show. He asked the Democratic party to 'do something' about The View after playing the widely ridiculed clip on Friday, a day that Goldberg typically takes off. 'You're a multi-millionaire black woman on national television saying this?' one TikTok user pointed out as well. 'That alone proves the difference between America and Iran.
After facing days of criticism, The View co-host Joy Behar sought to explain Goldberg's conspicuous absence. ' She's in Italy accepting an award for her book Bits and Pieces, so she will be out this week,' Behar said on Monday's show. Goldberg will not be back on the show before its annual weeklong summer break next week, Behar added. She will return on July 7, sources told the Daily Mail, along with her fellow co-hosts.
The news comes a month after top brass at ABC News and its parent company Disney were said have a sked the ladies to dial back their complaining about Donald Trump . ABC News President Almin Karamehmedovic and Disney CEO Bob Iger had each made the requests separately, The Daily Beast reported. The daily talk show has been filled with criticisms of the commander-in-chief and his policies, with mostly kind words for Democrats .
It also comes weeks after ABC News took extreme measures by firing of longtime correspondent Terry Moran for attacking the Trump administration in a post on social media. At the time, a rep reiterated the post did not reflect the views of ABC News. In December, ABC was forced to fork over $15 million to settle a libel suit brought by after Moran's longtime colleague, George Stephanopoulos, made erroneous on-air comments about Trump.
On Wednesday's episode of The View, Goldberg questioned whether the many human rights violations perpetrated by the Iranian regime was worse than the treatment of some groups in America. 'Let's just remember, too, the Iranians literally throw gay people off of buildings, Griffin said.
'They don't adhere to basic human rights.' 'Let's not do that,' Goldberg shot back, 'because if we start with that, we have been known in this country to tie gay folks to the car.' It isn't the first time Goldberg has come under for her on-air comments since replacing longtime moderator Rosie O'Donnell back in 2007.

Child star from original Willy Wonka film reveals how much he still earns from movie 54 YEARS later

Peter Ostrum was just 14-years-old when he appeared on screen as the beloved Charlie Bucket in 1971's Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Starring alongside Gene Wilder as the lucky winner of the Golden Ticket, the former actor once described his pay check as 'paltry' and later turned his back on acting to pursue a career as a vet. However 54 years on from the film's release, he has revealed he still receives a small income from his role. Speaking at Snowtown Film Festival in 2018, Peter said he makes around $8 to $9 in royalties every three months from the film being shown on TV. Based on Roald Dahl 's 1964 book, the movie told the story of five schoolchildren who won the chance to tour the magical factory belonging to candy man Wonka after finding golden tickets hidden inside chocolate bars. The film suffered 'lukewarm reviews' and 'died a quiet death' Peter recalled, earning $4million from its release and disappeared. Starring alongside Gene Wilder (pictured) as the lucky winner of the Golden Ticket, the former actor once described his pay check as 'paltry' and later turned his back on acting However, thanks to a series of TV broadcasts it began gaining popularity in the 80s with the child star admitting he had no idea just how popular it had become. Peter told the Daily Mirror: 'Back then when the film came out there was no red carpet premiere. 'I was in my hometown in Ohio and they had an opening there and I was the only one there. There was a little bit of fanfare but not much and the film died a quiet death. 'It had lukewarm reviews and people forgot about it. It wasn't until video 10 years later that it resurfaced and it took on a life of its own.' Peter traded in the acting scene to become a respected veterinarian, after getting a doctorate from prestigious American university Cornell and using his earnings from the film to buy a horse. He turned down a potentially lucrative three-film deal with producer David L. Wolper following his success in Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory to concentrate on his studies before specialising in treating cattle and horses. 'Everybody could be so lucky to have an experience like this and then to go in a completely different direction,' he told the Today show in 2015. Discussing his brief acting career with the Daily Express in 2014, the Ohio -born father-of-two recalled: 'Looking back, my pay check was paltry, but it was during filming that I really became interested in medicine.' Peter continued: 'People tell me they watched Willy Wonka so many times growing up that they wore out their VHS copy. We had no idea we were making a classic, which even coined a new phrase: "I've found the golden ticket." 'I will always cherish my memories of making the movie, but I feel I won the golden ticket by becoming a vet.' In an interview with the American Veterinary Medical Association, Peter recalled seeing a vet at work and thinking: 'This person really enjoyed what he did for a living.' He explained: 'My father was a lawyer, and I really didn't have a clue what he did all day. But I knew exactly what the veterinarian did. 'Someone making a living from something he enjoyed so much really sparked my interest. I thought if I didn't pursue that, I'd always kick myself.'

Inside the Italian island celebs are choosing over St Tropez - and it's also home to Princess Diana's favourite hotel

There's a glamorous Italian island that celebrities are flocking to instead of other dreamy locations like St Tropez and Monaco. Sardinia has become the destination of choice for A-listers and the ultra-wealthy. With spectacular beaches, crystal clear waters and a rich history, it's no wonder the Mediterranean island is attracting stars - desperate to tie the knot. Last summer, Amazon billionaire Jeff Bezos and his now wife, Lauren Sanchez, soaked up the sun in Sardinia, after sailing around aboard Bezos' Koru superyacht. They were accompanied by Leonardo DiCaprio, his girlfriend Vittoria Ceretti, as well as Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom. Sardinia is where on-off couple Tom Brady and Irina Shayk first met too, reportedly 'clicking' at the lavish $13 million wedding of billionaire Joe Nahmad in May 2023. Tom and Irina partied alongside famous faces like tennis pros Serena and Venus Williams, designer Tommy Hilfiger, and actor Leonardo DiCaprio It's also been said at President Joe Biden's daughter Ashley Biden was in attendance, as well as Prince William and Kate Middleton, according to a local news outlet. The ceremony took place in a structure built at the foot of Monte Moro. It began in the afternoon and went on until 'late at night,' the publication reported. It was followed by a celebration at the glamorous Hotel Cala di Volpe in the coastal area of Costa Smeralda - where rooms cost a whopping $3,924 a night - the following day. Pitch Perfect star Rebel Wilson and Ramona Agruma also tied the knot in Sardinia last September too, in an intimate ceremony surrounded by their nearest and dearest. As for other stars visiting the island, Paris Hilton went on a luxurious yachting trip to Sardinia with her children in June. And last year, British actress Gemma Arterton was spotted enjoying a local beach. Now, Jennifer Lopez is confirmed to be jetting there this summer. The American singer and songwriter will be performing at Cala di Volpe's annual August Gala. The Gala Night is a highlight of the season, with Mariah Carey headlining last year, and Imagine Dragons the year before the. But that's not the starriest part of the hotel, located near Pontili e Gavitelli and Costa Smeralda. With spectacular beaches, crystal clear waters and a rich history, it's no wonder the Mediterranean island is attracting stars The property featured in the James Bond film, The Spy Who Loved Me, as Bond (Sir Roger Moore) and Soviet agent Triple-X Anya Amasova (Barbara Bach) were seen walking through the hotel The property featured in the James Bond film, The Spy Who Loved Me, as Bond (Sir Roger Moore) and Soviet agent Triple-X Anya Amasova (Barbara Bach) were seen walking through the hotel. Other A-list guests who've frequented the venue include Beyonce, Katy Perry, Orlando Bloom and Justin Bieber. Princess Diana visited Cala di Volpe too, and reportedly said it was her favourite hotel. The royal stayed in the mega suite, which now costs $40,000 (£30k) per night, with Dodi Al-Fayed during their last holiday together back in 1997. In keeping with the glamorous island and its guests, Dolce & Gabbana partnered with DG Resort to transform Cala di Volpe this summer.
