Doyle hits walkoff homer in 9th, Rockies overcome 9-run 1st-inning deficit to beat Pirates 17-16
DENVER (AP) — Brenton Doyle hit a walkoff, two-run homer in a five-run ninth inning and the Colorado Rockies overcame a nine-run first-inning deficit to beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 17-16 on Friday night. The Rockies are the sixth team in major league history to win after surrendering nine first-inning runs according to Elias Sports Bureau. Cleveland was the last to do it in 2006. Colorado trailed 16-12 before rallying off Dennis Santana (3-3). Hunter Goodman hit his 20th homer with one out. Jordan Beck walked and scored on rookie Warming Bernabel's first triple. Thairo Estrada had an RBI single, and Doyle hit his eighth home run with one out to win it. Bernabel went 4 for 6 and hit his third homer for the Rockies — a three-run shot in the third to cut it to 9-4. Ezequiel Tovar went 4 for 6 and tied a major league record with four doubles. Doyle also finished with four of Colorado's 22 hits. Rookie Yanquiel Fernández hit his first homer — a two-run shot off Yohan Ramírez in the eighth to get the Rockies within four. Oneil Cruz hit his 18th homer and second career grand slam and Andrew McCutchen added a three-run shot — his 11th — off Antonio Senzatela as the Pirates became just the second team in 132 years to score nine-plus runs in the first inning on 10-plus hits that included a slam and a three-run homer. Cincinnati did it against the Louisville Colonels on June 18, 1893. McCutchen finished 3 for 5 with five RBIs. Reynolds had three of Pittsburgh's 18 hits and singled from both sides of the plate in the first — the first Pirate to do so since Neil Walker in 2015, also in Denver. Nick Gonzales finished 4 for 6 and Isiah Kiner-Falefa had three hits and three RBIs. Andrew Heaney lasted just 3 1/3 innings for Pittsburgh, allowing four runs — three earned — on seven hits. Rookie Dugan Darnell (1-0) pitched two scoreless innings for his first win. Key moment McCutchen's homer moved him past Bill Mazeroski into sixth place on the Pirates' RBIs list with 857. Key stat Colorado is the third team in the divisional era (since 1969) to win after trailing by nine runs. Colorado Music Festival musician pursues heights of Colorado, Florida
The Colorado Music Festival brings together exceptional musicians from 44 orchestras across the country and around the world. For four weeks, they live and play in Boulder, performing a packed calendar of four concerts each week. Under the baton of Music Director Peter Oundijian, the orchestra plays to a high standard and has become a world-class creative experience. "This is a great orchestra to play with," said Andrew Karr, Assistant Principal and 3rd horn. "It's made up of musicians from around the country, so it's high level. We're on a tight schedule, so we prepare at a really high level, which I enjoy." For Karr, playing in an orchestra is a childhood dream come true. He lives and plays with the Florida Orchestra in Tampa, Florida. In 2000, he auditioned to be a part of the Colorado Music Festival, and he's been coming to Colorado ever since. "When I first arrived in Colorado, I had zero experience with outdoor stuff," he told CBS News Colorado. Then, like most people who spend time in the state, he heard the call of the 14'ers. "I was really taken by the beauty and the challenge," he explained. "Particularly, I was taken by the concept of doing peaks that were on lists. I think there's something about that for a classical musician because we work so methodically in our profession. There was something about having something methodical I could do outside in the mountains that really sort of appealed to me." He's checked off a fair few 14'ers, but he was missing his list when he was back home. "So I started visiting the high point of each county in Florida," Karr said. He travelled across the state meeting landowners and mapping locations. He said he even needed to learn to kayak to reach islands that held that high point. "I decided that my last county in Florida would be the high point of Florida, which is Britton Hall, which is all of 340 feet about sea level," Karr recalled. Florida is finished now, but Karr keeps climbing in Colorado. "For me, the pursuit is as much as the successful completion," Karr said. From Beethoven to Bierstadt, Karr is pursuing new heights every single summer. Ice hockey fans, players excited for World Juniors tournament coming to Minnesota
Minnesota hockey fans get an extra gift this holiday season. The World Juniors is coming to the state of hockey. "Like no other," described defenseman Logan Hensler. "Happens once a year. It's always on TV. People are always watching, talking about it. There's a ton of attention to it. It's a pretty cool experience." Hensler has been there before. The defenseman from Woodbury took gold last January. Now, he's trying to repeat as a large, talented group tangle for a roster spot on Team USA. "Your compete, your discipline. All around play. You get pushed every day by these guys," said Hensler. "It's just important you keep up and keep going. Push through." Hensler's last few months have been his most accomplished in hockey. He won the most recent World Juniors gold and was then selected 23rd overall by the Ottawa Senators in the NHL draft in June. "Dream come true," remembered Hensler. "Got there, it was a great experience. The moment I got picked was kind of a blur. Kind of a blackout moment. Really special. Great organization. Just happy my family was there to witness it." Hensler, the top Minnesotan selected in 2025, will be a sophomore with the Badgers this winter. But it might not be long before he trades red and white for Ottawa's colors. "This next coming year I'm going back to Wisconsin," said Hensler. "A big thing for me is taking it year by year. Just gonna take this year, see how it goes. See how I grow as a player.
