Kolkata advocate gifts phone to wife, Gujarat cops come calling

Time of India08-07-2025
A mobile phone purchased as a gift from a central Kolkata store by a Salt Lake-based advocate, hailing from Sakharipara in Muchipara, for his wife has become a major headache for the couple.
The mobile is now at the centre of a cybercrime investigation being carried out simultaneously by Gujarat Police and Bowbazar Police.
According to Kolkata Police, the phone was purchased for Rs 49,000 from a store on Mission Row Extension in Feb. The advocate said the mobile phone was in a sealed condition and even a GST bill was issued against it. Yet, a few days after his wife began using it, the Gujarat Police arrived at his doorstep, alleging that it was used to commit cybercrimes before its sale.
The couple, who believed they purchased a new device, learned of the connection when officers from Rajkot police station, under Gujarat Police, matched their phone's IMEI number to one used in a criminal case. "We were shocked when Gujarat Police contacted us about a cybercrime investigation linked to our phone," said the advocate to Gujarat cops.

The revelation prompted the couple to file a complaint at Hare Street police station, accusing the mobile vendor of deliberately selling them an old phone involved in criminal activities as new.
"This is a clear case of deception," said an investigator. The case was later handed over to Bowbazar Police as the shop fell in their jurisdiction.
Bowbazar Police Station, now handling the investigation, has summoned the store owners for questioning. They have also summoned the distributor. "We have gone through the records of the seller and found nothing suspicious. Hence, we have now summoned the distributor.
The seller claimed he had no inkling that the phone was used earlier."
The phone has been seized and sent for forensic examination to determine its history and whether the sellers were aware of its previous use. "We are investigating how an old phone was sold as new and whether there is a larger network involved in such practices," said a senior cop.
The case has raised concerns about consumer protection and the need for stricter regulations in mobile phone retail. Legal experts suggest this incident could lead to enhanced scrutiny of mobile phone vendors and their sales practices. The Gujarat Police continue to investigate the original cybercrime while local authorities focus on the fraudulent sale. The case remains under investigation, with both the couple and law enforcement awaiting forensic results.

Thief hangs off moving train after snatching phone, jumps off as passengers beat him: WATCH

A dramatic incident aboard the Bhagalpur-Muzaffarpur Janseva Intercity Express near Bihar's Munger has gone viral after a thief, allegedly fleeing with a stolen phone, was caught on camera hanging from the footboard of a moving train before leaping off mid-journey. The scene unfolded when the man – seen in the video wearing a torn T-shirt, a jeans, holding a shirt in his hand, and injured – snatched a passenger's phone and tried to escape. With no route to flee, he latched onto the train's footboard, desperately holding on as the train sped ahead. The video also shows passengers hurling abuses at him, and some even striking him with a belt as he dangled dangerously from the footboard. In a desperate plea, the thief is seen warning the men attacking him that he would drag them down if they didn't back off. He eventually slips lower, and finally flings himself into bushes near the track. The entire episode, filmed by a fellow passenger, quickly went viral, sparking widespread outrage and debate. Jamalpur Railway SP Raman Chaudhary told Aaj Tak, 'We are looking into the incident and trying to identify the individual seen in the video.' 😡 — 𝙼𝚛 𝚃𝚢𝚊𝚐𝚒 (@mktyaggi) July 25, 2025 The video, which has garnered over five lakh views on X, has ignited a fierce conversation online. Some users expressed empathy for the man, while others condemned the soft-hearted takes. One commenter said, 'Now people will sympathize with the thief but have you ever felt when your belongings get stolen, expensive phones, watch, money and many more not once but on a daily basis, his fate was decided.' Another wrote, 'Koi insaan pura mahine mehnat karke 12000 ka mobile buy karta hai, aur aese log ek jhatke me chura lete hai. Jab inke ander koi manwata nahi toh inke prati bhi kisi ko koi samvedna nahi rakhni chahiye.' (When someone works hard all month to buy a phone worth Rs 12,000 and such people snatch it in a second, if they show no humanity, they deserve no sympathy either.) However, not everyone took a hardline stance. 'Both are wrong—when someone's hard-earned money is stolen, only they know the pain. But there is a legal system for justice. No one should take the law into their own hands. In such cases, the thief's life could also be at risk,' another user said.

‘Precursor to assassination': Gaza reporter Anas Al-Sharif on Israeli threats; CPJ sounds alarm over journalist safety

Anas Al-Sharif, a news reporter in Gaza, is allegedly facing a direct threat from Israel to his life after continued online attacks by a spokesperson of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). 'A precursor to my assassination' is how the 28-year-old Palestinian journalist has described it. Palestinian journalist Anas Al-Sharif, 28, has lost some of his family to IDF strikes; and has continued to report from the ground in Gaza.(Instagram/@anasjamal44) Al Jazeera, the Qatar-based news outlet for which he works, and the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) have expressed immediate alarm over the threats by IDF Arabic-language spokesperson Avichay Adraee, who accuses Al-Sharif of being a terrorist. 'Avichay Adraee's campaign is not only a media threat or an image destruction; it is a real-life threat,' Al-Sharif was quoted as saying by the CPJ. Also read | Speaking for Gaza 'not patriotism': Bombay HC refuses permission for protest, says 'do something for India' Al-Sharif is married and has at least one child, a daughter, his Instagram page shows. Some members of his extended family have been killed in Israeli airstrikes. 'All of this is happening because my coverage of the crimes of the Israeli occupation in the Gaza Strip harms them and damages their image in the world," Al-Sharif said of Israel, whom he accused of wanting to 'morally assassinate" him. Also read | What UN meet amid grave tragedy in Gaza aims to achieve, and what it might Israel has already banned Al Jazeera in the country and from the occupied Palestinian territory of West Bank. The IDF's Arabic spokesperson, Avichay Adraee has alleged that Al-Sharif is a Hamas member, particularly since the journalist cried on air this month while reporting on starvation in Gaza. In videos on July 23 and 24 — around the time Israel and the US withdrew their representatives from truce talks with Hamas — IDF spokesperson Adraee said the reporting on starving Palestinians was 'a fabricated drama starring Anas Al-Sharif, who sheds crocodile tears". In earlier videos the same month, Adraee called Al Sharif's and the channel's work 'intellectual terrorism". He was responding to a post by Al-Sharif on his X account that said: 'As a citizen of Gaza, I support a ceasefire by any means now. We are not living; we are just trying to survive.' Also read | Immigration 'killing' Europe, says Donald Trump CPJ regional director Sara Qudah said the latest accusations by the IDF 'represent an effort to manufacture consent to kill Al-Sharif'. She called on the international community to protect him. Al Jazeera, in a statement on Friday, said it 'denounces these relentless efforts, which have consistently incited against its staff since the beginning of its coverage of the ongoing Israeli war on Gaza'. The IDF has reportedly stuck by Adraee's stance in his latest video of July 24, in which he accused Al-Sharif of being a member of Al-Qassam, the military wing of Hamas. Global news organisations such as the BBC, AFP, AP and Reuters earlier this week issued a joint statement about being 'desperately concerned' for journalists in Gaza amid warnings of mass starvation. 'IDF has murdered journalists before' While foreign journalists are not allowed free access to Gaza for months now, the CPJ says Israel has deliberately killed local sources of information and reporting. It mentioned at least four Al Jazeera staff — Hamza Al Dahdouh, Ismail Al Ghoul, Rami Al Refee, and Hossam Shabat — as cases of murder by the IDF. Israel, meanwhile, is facing increasing global condemnation over its actions in Gaza, which had started as a response to the October 7, 2023, attack by Hamas that killed around 1,200 people in Israel. The war since is reported to have claimed over 50,000 Palestinian lives. Starvation in Gaza prompts UN meet Mass starvation at least since early this year is reported to have claimed over 110 lives so far – one of the reasons why a UN conference is now scheduled for July 28-30 in New York to possibly call for peace and an eventual two-state solution. Israel and its largest backer, the US, are not attending the meet, which is being co-chaired by Saudi Arabia and France. They have also called back their representatives from talks for a ceasefire with Hamas, saying the group was making unreasonable demands about Israeli military withdrawal from Gaza.

ED attaches Rs. 15.47 crore property of Delta Ltd in money laundering case

Kolkata, July 26 (UNI) The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has attached immovable properties worth Rs 15.47 crore belonging to Delta Ltd and others in connection with a money laundering case. The ED has also submitted a final charge sheet July 24 in a special court under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) in Kolkata against the company and 7 others, agency officials said. The central anti-laundering money agency began its probe on the basis of an FIR registered at Hare Street Police Station, Kolkata, following a directive from Calcutta High Court on writ petitions alleging non-payment of statutory dues, such as Provident Fund (PF), despite regular salary deductions. The FIR was lodged against Delta Ltd and others for alleged criminal conspiracy, cheating, and misappropriation of workers' Provident Fund deductions. The ED's investigation revealed that nearly 800 workers of the company and its associated entities were cheated through the misuse of their PF fund trust (Delta Jute & Industries Ltd Worker's Provident Fund Trust). The company had been granted exemption under the Employees Provident Funds (EPF) Act, allowing it to manage PF money through its own trust. This trust was intended to operate and ensure proper investment of employees' PF funds. However, in violation of the mandate, employees were appointed as trustees instead of professionals or fund managers. These employees acted solely under management's directions and had no real decision making power. Due to continuous violations and financial losses, the exemption was revoked in 2014. Despite this, and even after ongoing court proceedings, the company continued deducting PF from workers' salaries but failed to deposit it with either the trust or PF authorities, the ED said. "The money was wrongfully retained as the company deliberately avoided depositing the statutory contributions deducted from employees," the ED noted. According to the agency, the withheld amounts were subsequently laundered and used for non-permitted purposes, including loan repayment, meeting business expenses, and property transactions. The total Proceeds of Crime (POC) in the case amount to Rs.15.47 crore. "The attachment of full POC in the form of immovable properties has been done and a final prosecution complaint has been filed," the ED added. UNI PC AAB
