However, careful evidence gathering and unexpected support helped him stay until retirement with full benefits.
The employee's story highlights ongoing challenges some workers face as they approach pension eligibility. Accusations from HR included false claims about attendance and security breaches, but the employee's detailed records and allies proved these charges baseless.
A long career under threat
The man, a software engineer who had worked at the company since the 1970s, had contributed to major innovations and held patents that saved the firm millions.
Approaching pension age, he noticed a disturbing pattern: several colleagues near 60 had also been targeted by HR with questionable accusations.
HR first accused him of not punching in and out correctly. Confident in his record, the employee challenged them to provide evidence. They failed to do so. He explained that for 15 years, he had driven the company carpool bus from a city 40 miles away, clocking in on time every day with 16 witnesses supporting his presence.
False accusations escalate
When the attendance claim did not stick, HR alleged he allowed unauthorised individuals into the building. The incident cited involved the employee holding the door open for his best friend, a long-term colleague who had lost a foot to type 2 diabetes and used a wheelchair. This friend had also worked at the company since the 1970s.
Prior to the accusation, the employee had taken the chief of security out for lunch and shared his concerns about HR's tactics.

With security's help, he obtained surveillance footage which showed the HR lady and even the CEO holding the door for the same colleague, undermining the charge against him.
Standing firm until retirement
By presenting the footage, the employee effectively turned the tables on HR, exposing their unfair and inconsistent application of rules. His persistence ensured he remained employed until he reached pension eligibility and was able to retire with full benefits.
The case drew attention on Reddit, where commenters noted the widespread nature of such pension-related tactics in US companies. One user reported a similar experience where upper management in HR was dismissed after an ageism lawsuit forced a settlement. Another noted the importance of contracts with strong pension protections in preventing such situations.
This story sheds light on challenges faced by ageing workers in US corporations, demonstrating how vigilance and evidence can protect rights in the face of questionable HR practices.
As reported by the Twisted Sifter, this veteran employee's case stands as an example of resilience and the importance of standing one's ground when confronted with unfair treatment in the workplace.

It is shocking that people are still being kept out of temples because of their caste, says Madras High Court
It is shocking that even after more than 75 years of independence people are still being kept out of temples because of their caste, the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court has observed in a recent order. Justice B. Pugalendhi observed that the Constitution did not allow discrimination. God did not discriminate. Only human beings did, the court said, while hearing the petitions filed by Vanniyakulachathiriyar Nala Arakattalai (Trust), represented by its president Murugan, and Marimuthu, who alleged that Scheduled Caste devotees were being denied entry into the temple. The court observed that the petitions raised serious constitutional and administrative issues concerning Mariamman Temple at Chinna Dharapuram in Karur district. The Trust sought removal of the 2018 prohibitory order and permission to resume festivals and worship. It said no caste discrimination took place in the temple, which they had the right to manage. On the other hand, Mr. Marimuthu alleged that the SC devotees were being denied entry into the temple. The officials had failed to protect their rights to equality and religion. The Karur Collector, in a status report, admitted that the temple had remained closed for public worship and festival-related activities since 2018. Pujas alone were being performed. The reason was apprehension of communal tension and law and order issues, he said. Condemning the report, the court observed that the closure of a public temple for years under the guise of law and order concern was a dereliction of constitutional duty. If there was any real threat, it was the Collector's responsibility to handle it. Equally disturbing was the role of police. 'They seem to think that the only way to keep peace is by denying entry to everyone. This is wrong. Stopping everyone from entering is not the way to maintain peace. It is the job of the police to make sure that rights are protected, and that anyone who breaks the law is dealt with properly,' the court observed. It observed that the Collector admitted that the temple was under the control of the HR&CE Department and was being managed by a Fit Person. Legally, the temple was a public temple under the HR&CE Department, and the Trust had no official right to claim full control. It was the duty of the department and the State to make sure that everyone was allowed to worship. A good example of how such situations could be handled was the Kandadevi Temple festival in Sivaganga district. The temple festival had been stopped for 17 years due to similar caste tensions. But, in 2024, the government took proactive steps and ensured that the festival took place peacefully with participation of all. The government must remember that peace built by denying rights was not real peace, it was surrender, the court observed. The court made it clear that no person or group could block the access to a public temple based on caste. If anyone tried to create trouble or claim superiority based on caste, they would face strict legal consequences, the court said. The court directed the Karur Collector, Superintendent of Police, and HR&CE Department to file a report and posted the matter for hearing after three weeks.

Mariamman Temple at Chinna Dharapuram opened for darshan after eight years
Sri Mariamman Temple at Chinna Dharapuram, which was kept closed for eight years on an order of a Revenue Divisional Officer (RDO) following a clash between two caste groups, was opened amid tight security on Friday by allowing entry to caste Hindus and Scheduled Caste people. The temple has been under the control of the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowment (HR&CE) since 1973 with the devotees belonging to various castes worshipping the Goddess. However, a clash between two caste groups erupted in 2018. While the SC people insisted on their right to worship at the temple, the caste Hindus opposed their entry. Since it became a law and order issue, the then RDO conducted an inquiry and issued an order to close the temple. Since then the temple had been kept closed for the public. Both the groups moved the Madras High Court on the issue. When the matter was taken up for hearing before Justice B. Pugalendhi, he questioned the need for keeping the temple closed for so long and issued an order to reopen the temple with immediate effect and directed the HR&CE department to ensure entry of all to the temple. The officials subsequently displayed a flex board on Thursday, thereby announcing that the people of all castes can offer worship at the temple. A group of caste Hindus rushed to the spot and forcefully removed the flex, thereby leading to a scuffle. They entered into arguments with the HE&CE officials and told them that they would not allow SC people to enter the temple. Amid a surcharged atmosphere, the HR&CE authorities, led by Assistant Commissioner M. Ramanikandan, opened the doors of the temple on Friday in the presence of revenue officials and a large number of police personnel. The people belonging to the two groups entered the temple. After cleaning the premises, special pujas were performed to the main deity. Mr. Ramanikandan told The Hindu that the temple was opened as per the High Court order. Irrespective of castes, the devotees, including SC people, were allowed to enter the temple and offer worship. No one would be restricted. Tough action would be taken against those creating trouble.

Bengaluru Man Furious After Auto Driver Gets Busy Watching Actress On Instagram
Last Updated: Instead of continuing the journey, the driver slowed down in the middle of a busy road to open her profile and scroll through her feed A man in Bengaluru was left 'furious and helpless" after his auto driver slowed down mid-ride to scroll through an actress's Instagram profile, putting both time and safety at risk. The passenger, an office-goer, shared his story in a Reddit post that has since gone viral, prompting many others to comment and share their own similar experiences. In his post, the man shared that he had booked an auto via Uber, expecting a quick ten-minute ride to his office ahead of an important call. However, what should have been a routine commute soon turned into a frustrating and nerve-wracking experience. As the man wrote on Reddit, the driver, after a quick glance at the map, minimised it and opened Instagram instead. 'He immediately opened Instagram and started scrolling—while driving with one hand," the passenger recalled. Matters escalated when the driver spotted a post by Telugu actor Sreeleela. Instead of continuing the journey, he slowed down in the middle of a busy road to open her profile and scroll through her feed. 'I was furious and felt completely helpless. The ride had just begun, and I could already feel the minutes slipping away," he stated. Several Reddit users chimed in, expressing anger and disbelief. One remarked that slowing down in traffic to check a celebrity's profile was 'just reckless." 'That sounds so frustrating! 😣Slowing down in the middle of the road to check out a celebrity's profile is just reckless," the comment read. Another observed that pulling over abruptly without signaling and using a phone seemed common among auto drivers and scooter riders. 'I've seen many auto walas just slow down and pull over suddenly to the road side, without any indicator, and I notice they're always looking at their phone. It's also a problem with guys on scootys as well. It's so frustrating when you're driving right behind them." A third user said almost every driver seen on the road uses their phone while driving, adding that 'only heavy traffic prevents too many accidents." More strongly, one Redditor quipped that drivers had made 'their cell phone more important an organ than their brains" 'I am not saying we should help them wanting so badly to explore afterlives but why not. Let them cell phone users behind the handlebar / steering wheel experience what they so badly deserve," the user adder. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
