This useful new app automatically applies for affordable housing units that you qualify for
'I figured it'd take, what, 30 minutes?' Stienaers wrote on LinkedIn while chronicling his experience. 'Instead, I ended up drowning in forms, wondering whether it's even worth it to try finishing the application process.'
That frustration led to Homey, a new mobile app that cuts through the red tape and actually helps New Yorkers apply for the affordable housing units they qualify for. Think of it like TurboTax, but for the housing lottery—and about 90% less painful.
Unlike Housing Connect, which was designed for desktop (despite nearly a quarter of NYC households lacking one), Homey is mobile-first. It takes about seven minutes to set up a profile, skipping the redundant and privacy-invading questions that bog down the official site. Instead of listing every financial account in your household, you just confirm that your total assets fall under the limit, with a built-in safety buffer to protect your eligibility.
But the best part? Homey automatically applies to all the lotteries you qualify for—no need to check back constantly, sift through fine print or risk missing deadlines. The app inputs your information into the Housing Connect system and tracks your application status in one place.
And yes, it's already helping.

A dozen NYC subway stations are about to get new accessibility upgrades, says MTA
A dozen more subway stations are getting a much-needed accessibility glow-up—and not a moment too soon. The MTA announced this week that 12 additional stations across all five boroughs will receive ADA upgrades under its $68 billion 2025–2029 capital plan. Expect elevators, ramps and other features designed to make the system friendlier to seniors, parents with strollers and the more than 1 million New Yorkers living with disabilities. Among the stations getting the lift (literally): 53rd Street (R) in Brooklyn, 190th Street (A) in Manhattan and Fordham Road (B/D) in the Bronx. In Queens, both Grand Avenue-Newtown and 63rd Drive-Rego Park (M/R) made the list. Even the diminutive but mighty Botanic Garden station on the S shuttle is in line for upgrades. The MTA says it used 'legislatively mandated' criteria to decide where to build next, factors like ridership, transfer points and geographic equity. For the first time, public input helped shape the plan via an online tool that drew more than 2,000 responses. 'When it comes to accessibility, the MTA is delivering much more than ever before—both in terms of dollars and number of ADA stations,' said MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber. 'And thanks to our fully funded Capital Plan, we are going to keep moving forward at the same pace—five times faster than ever before—until we achieve full accessibility.' The 12 new stations add to 43 others already slated for accessibility work under the same capital plan. And while those upgrades are full speed ahead, there's still a long track ahead: A 2022 legal settlement requires the MTA to make 95-percent of all subway stations accessible by 2055. (The current progress is just over a quarter.) Since 2020, the MTA has delivered 36 newly accessible stations—double what it managed in the previous six years. It has also launched a revamped Elevator and Escalator Status tool with improved search features and customizable alerts. If subway accessibility has ever felt like a pipe dream, this latest batch of upgrades is a tangible step forward. Whether you roll, walk or stroller your way through NYC, the system is slowly becoming one everyone can ride.

Jay-Z teams up with Caesars and SL Green to bid for huge Times Square Casino project
MEGASTAR JAY-Z joined forces with some of the biggest names in the casino business, looking to pitch a Caesars Palace Times Square casino project in New York. The rapper - real name Shawn Carter - was among several attendees to sit in front of the Community Advisory Committee (CAC) and bid for one of three $500 million downstate licenses. 1 The Roc Nation co-founder was representing a partnership alongside Caesars Palace and SL Green Properties and pledged $250million in benefits to the community as part of their pitch to convert an existing office on Broadway. They face stiff competition though with EIGHT applications in total having been submitted to the New York State Gaming Commission. Jay-Z, who grew up in Brooklyn, says the location was "perfect" for the partnership group and says the introduction of a casino resort would only "fulfil and enhance" the area, which he likened to huge landmarks around the world. The 150,000-square-foot gambling hall would boast 1000 casino rooms, a Caesars Sportsbook, four restaurants associated with high-profile chefs and a spa. Concerns over the venue becoming the main attraction to Broadway have been rebuffed by the entrepreneur, who insists they would only act as an 'additive' to a tourist spot which entices over 50 million tourists per year. During the presentation, Jay-Z said: "It's our chance to change the narrative and create something all around the world. "If we treat Times Square with the love and the attention that it requires, it can fulfill its promise. 'This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, I believe, to support something that's homegrown. 'As we hear a lot of talk about community, we are the community. We're from this community. 'We're not coming to compete with Broadway. We're coming to be additive. "Anything that we've done in the past, we've always included the community. We've never excluded the community.' The group's proposition also indicated a forecasted $7 billion in direct tax revenue and $26.7 billion in local economic activity in the first 10 years. Roc Nation also stated they'd supported more than five million people with social impacts worth more than $78 million. More than 3,000 construction jobs would be created as a result if they were awarded a license, and the 3,800 permanent jobs it would create would be 'mostly filled by New Yorkers'.
