‘Bahuda Yatra' begins ahead of schedule
Though the pulling of chariots was slated to start at 4 pm, it began at about 2.45 pm much ahead of the schedule amid chants of 'Jai Jagannath', 'Haribol' and beating of cymbals. The chariots of Devi Subhadra and Lord Jagannath followed Lord Balabhadra's Taladhwaja.
Earlier, the sibling deities, Lord Balabhadra, Devi Subhadra and Lord Jagannath, were carried to 'Taladhwaja', 'Darpadalana' and 'Nandighosha' chariots respectively in a ritual called 'pahandi'. The 'pahandi' comes from the Sanskrit word 'padamundanam', which means taking slow steps movement by spreading feet.
The 'pahandi' of the trinity began with Chakraraj Sudarshan, followed by Lord Balabhadra, Devi Subhadra and finally Lord Jagannath. Though the 'pahandi' ritual was earlier scheduled to begin at 12 noon, it started at 10 am, much earlier. The ceremonial procession took around two hours following which the deities were seated on the chariots.
The majestic chariots were pulled by devotees from Shree Gundicha temple to the 12th-century shrine, the main seat of Lord Jagannath, a distance of about 2.6 km. Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and Leader of Opposition in Odisha Assembly Naveen Patnaik greeted the people on the auspicious occasion of Bahuda Yatra.
'Greetings to all on the occasion of Bahuda Yatra. By the grace of the Lord, everyone's life be filled with happiness, peace and prosperity,' Majhi said in a post on X.
Amid the beating of gongs and blowing of conches and cymbals, 'pahandi' rituals were performed. While Lord Balabhadra was carried to the chariot on a line called 'dhadi pahandi', Goddess Subhadra, the sister of Lord Jagannath, was brought to her 'Darpadalana' chariot in a special procession called 'sunya pahandi' (the Goddess looking at the sky while being carried to the chariot) by servitors.
When Lord Jagannath finally stepped out of Shree Gundicha temple, emotions spilled over the Grand Road as devotees raised slogans like 'Jai Jagannath' and 'Haribol'. Before the 'pahandi,' a number of customary rituals like 'Mangla Arati' and 'Mailam' were held before the presiding deities came out from the sanctum sanctorum of the temple.
The 'chhera pahanra' ritual or sweeping of the floor of the chariots with a golden broom was performed by Gajapati Maharaja Dibyasingha Deb, the titular king of Puri, on all the chariots. The ritual started at 1.35 pm. The Gajapati began 'chhera pahanra' on Taladhwaja chariot of Lord Balabhadra followed by Lord Jagannath's chariot and lastly on Devi Subhadra's chariot.
Lakhs of devotees thronged the pilgrim town of Puri to witness the Bahuda Yatra. The festival is being conducted under unprecedented security arrangements in the backdrop of a stampede near Gundicha temple on June 29 when three persons were killed and around 50 others injured.
A total of 10,000 personnel, including 6,150 of Odisha Police and 800 personnel of the CAPFs, have been deployed in the temple town to ensure that no such incident takes place, an officer said. The police issued a traffic advisory for visitors in anticipation of a huge turnout.

The Chinese-owned e-commerce platform listed the product as "Lord Jagannath Mandala Art Mat Doorway Non-Slip Soft Water Uptake Carpet Krishna Jaganath Hindu Go". It described the doormat as a "Non-slip soft water uptake carpet" and showed a price of approximately Rs 787. Amar Patnaik, Biju Janata Dal (BJD) leader and former MP, slammed the "egregious" act of selling doormats. Calling the act "shameless," the BJD leader wrote, "I vehemently condemn the egregious act of selling doormats with the sacred image of Lord Jagannath on AliExpress!" "This shameless profanity is an affront to the deepest sentiments of millions of devotees, trampling upon the revered iconography with utter disregard. It's a desecration of the highest order, and those responsible must be held accountable," he added. BJP leader Baijayant Jay Panda also condemned the product, saying, "As an Odia and one among millions of devotees, this is unacceptable. I see a deeper conspiracy by this Chinese eCommerce site, already banned in India. It's just the latest in a long line of foreign entities who have kept trying over centuries to belittle Sanatan Dharma & demean its followers. If the seller does not walk this back, several steps must be taken to make it regret its stand." Many social media users also criticised the product and called for its immediate removal along with an apology from both the seller and the platform. "What is this Ali Express? You are selling doormats featuring Lord Jagannath, a deeply revered deity worshipped by Hindus across the world. Take it down immediately. This is a shameful act of disrespect by AliExpress," one user wrote. "We appeal to all devotees worldwide to raise their voice against this unacceptable act. The sacred image of Mahaprabhu Jagannath on a doormat sold by @AliExpress_EN is deeply offensive. Remove it, apologize, and ensure this never happens again," commented another. "This is outrageous. RSS chief to inaugurate Hedgewar building at KKSU Waranga on Aug 1
1 2 Nagpur: RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat will inaugurate the Kavikulguru Kalidas Sanskrit University's (KKSU) prestigious Dr Keshav Baliram Hedgewar International Academic Building at its Abhinavbharti International Academic Campus (AIAC) at Waranga, off Wardha Road, on Friday. He will also perform the groundbreaking ceremony for boys and girls hostels and an international gurukul. The ceremonies will be held in the presence of chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, presided over by vice-chancellor Hare Ram Tripathi. The guests will include revenue minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule, higher and technical education minister Chandrakant Patil, and minister of state for finance Ashish Jaiswal. Former VC Pankaj Chande, former VC Uma Vaidya, MP Shyamkumar Barve, and MLA Sameer Meghe will be present. Registrar Devanand Shukla and AIAC Waranga director Prof Rushikumar Bande will also be present. In 2015, the Maharashtra govt provided 50 acres of land for the expansion of the university. Subsequently, to establish Waranga campus as an education hub, an additional 50 acres of land was allocated to KKSU, alongside IIIT and Maharashtra National Law University, for the development of an extended academic campus in Waranga. As soon as the land was acquired, the foundation stone was laid in September 2017. A grant of Rs5 crore was received from RUSA for this academic building. Under the leadership of Prof Hare Ram Tripathi, the current international academic building was constructed with this grant. In the coming years, the AIAC will feature a global research centre for Sanskrit and Oriental Studies, an international gurukul for traditional science studies, and a study centre for subjects ranging from ancient to modern. Additionally, separate hostels for boys and girls will soon be established. KKSU is the only Sanskrit language university in Maharashtra. It has been awarded the highest grade of 'A Plus' by NAAC. The university's academic and research endeavours, along with its disciplined administrative system, hold a distinguished position in the field of higher education and Sanskrit. The university is recognised for its diverse, socially relevant, and academic programmes, conferences, workshops, modern and relevant curricula, traditional sciences, socially oriented research, civil services, natural medicine, hospitality science, yoga science, interior design, and many other courses. Considering all these aspects, a recent survey ranked KKSU as the top Sanskrit university. The primary objective of KKSU is the promotion and dissemination of Sanskrit. In line with this goal, 368 colleges across Maharashtra are affiliated with the university. The university also operates a sub-centre in Ratnagiri, Konkan region. It has been recognised by the University Grants Commission as an open distance education centre, and its courses are in demand across India.

Minister replies in Sanskrit, wins applause in House
Bhopal: School education minister Udai Pratap Singh drew applause in the assembly on Wednesday when he delivered part of his reply in Sanskrit, responding to a call attention motion read out in the classical language by BJP MLA Abhishek Pandey. Pandey, raising the issue of promoting Sanskrit education in MP, began by announcing he would read his motion in Sanskrit. "Since my call attention motion concerns Sanskrit, I will like to read out the notice in Sanskrit," he said. As the members looked askance at each other, Speaker Narendra Singh Tomar said: "He will read it out in Sanskrit but the written text with you is in Hindi and the minister will reply in Hindi, too." But, Singh took the House by surprise when he started replying as he, too, spoke in Sanskrit at length before turning to Hindi. "If I knew you were going to read out the notice in Sanskrit, I would have come better prepared and replied to the whole thing in Sanskrit," he said.
