‘Don't drag politics into sport': Ramdas Athawale slams India-Pakistan match cancellation; says match abroad shouldn't be politicised
NEW DELHI: Union minister of state for social justice and empowerment,
Ramdas Athawale
, on Sunday questioned the decision to cancel the India vs Pakistan match in the World Championship of Legends (WCL) tournament.
The match, scheduled in England, was called off after backlash over the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir.
'There is no need to drag politics into sports. If the match was in India, the concern would be more serious. But this one was in England. We have defeated Pakistan in war and on the cricket field as well. The Opposition should not politicise it,' Athawale told ANI.
He acknowledged the national anger after the terror attack in Pahalgam and the subsequent Operation Sindoor, but stressed that cricket and terrorism were two separate issues.
"India vs Pakistan match was scheduled to be held in England. Terrorists indeed attacked Pahalgam, and after that terrorist camps were neutralised. But the matter of the match is different," he said.
Earlier, the WCL issued a statement confirming the cancellation of the match, apologising for hurting public and players' sentiments. Organisers said the idea had come after a friendly volleyball match between India and Pakistan, aimed at giving fans a moment of joy.

But given the reaction, they decided to cancel the fixture.
The move comes after several Indian cricket legends expressed their unwillingness to play. Players like Suresh Raina and Shikhar Dhawan had already made their position clear.
This isn't the first time Athawale has made headlines over cricket. Earlier, he stirred debate by demanding 25% reservation for Dalits and tribals in cricket and other sports, claiming these communities have long been sidelined in the sporting world.

'Avoid border areas': India issues advisory for Indians in Cambodia amid Thailand conflict
The Indian Embassy in Cambodia issued an advisory for Indian nationals travelling to the country amid ongoing clashes with Thailand, suggesting that they avoid going to border areas. A convenience store at a gas station is damaged after Cambodia fired artillery shells in Sisaket province, Thailand.(AP) 'In view of the ongoing clashes at the Cambodia-Thailand border, Indian nationals are advised to avoid travelling to the border areas,' the advisory read. The advisory asked Indian nationals to approach the embassy in Phnom Penh in case of any emergency. The Embassy also issued a phone number and an email ID for the same. 'In case of any emergency. Indian nationals may approach the Embassy of India, Phnom Penh at +855 92881676 or email the advisory added. The advisory comes amid recent tensions and conflict between Cambodia and Thailand at the border. In light of the conflict, the Indian embassy in Thailand had earlier issued a travel advisory urging Indian nationals to avoid certain areas near the Thailand-Cambodia border. 'In view of the situation near the Thailand-Cambodia border, all Indian travellers to Thailand are advised to check updates from Thai official sources, including TAT Newsroom,' the Indian embassy wrote in a post on its official X handle. The Thailand-Cambodia conflict Thailand and Cambodia clashed for a third day on Saturday, as the death toll from their bloodiest fighting in years rose to 33 and Phnom Penh called for an "immediate ceasefire". A long-running border dispute erupted into intense conflict involving jets, artillery, tanks and ground troops on Thursday, prompting the UN Security Council to hold an emergency meeting on the crisis Friday. Cambodia's defence ministry said 13 people were now confirmed killed in the fighting, including eight civilians and five soldiers, with 71 people wounded. In Thailand, the army said five soldiers were killed on Friday, taking the toll there to 20 -- 14 civilians and six military. The death toll across the two countries is now higher than the 28 killed in the last major round of fighting between 2008 and 2011. The fighting marks a dramatic escalation in a long-running dispute over their shared 800-kilometre (500-mile) border. The neighbours are both popular destinations for millions of foreign tourists. Dozens of kilometres in several areas are contested, and fighting broke out between 2008 and 2011, leaving at least 28 people dead and tens of thousands displaced. A UN court ruling in 2013 settled the matter for over a decade, but the current crisis erupted in May when a Cambodian soldier was killed in a new clash.

Police said they recovered 6.106 Kg heroin and two motorcycles during the operation. They said key accused Sarbjit alias Joban, who was operating from a border-area village, "is in direct contact with notorious smuggler Rana across the border." Sarbjit was arrested along with a juvenile, with 1 Kg heroin recovered from them, they added. "His interrogation leads to the arrest of two more smugglers — Dharam Singh and Kulbir Singh — from Ajnala, with over 5 Kg heroin seized," police said. They also informed that FIRs were registered at PS Airport and PS Chheharta under relevant sections of the NDPS Act. Gill has been thrown into deep end as captain: Manjrekar decodes Indias shambolic outing in Manchester
New Delhi [India], July 26 (ANI): Former cricketer-turned-commentator Sanjay Manjrekar feels Shubman Gill, who is carrying "immense responsibility" on his shoulders, has been thrown into the deep end during his first captaincy assignment in England. India arrived in England without its batting bigwigs Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, to orchestrate an unprecedented series win. The challenge was immense, considering India has returned winless in every single tour since 2007. From Leeds to London, India fought their hearts out but surrendered to a 2-1 trail in the five-match series. In the fourth Test, the story has been a complete contrast to the past three contests. India has appeared out of its depth as England pulls the strings to control the flow of the game. Manjrekar decoded the various reasons behind India's fall from grace at Old Trafford in Manchester. With injuries to Akash Deep and Nitish Kumar Reddy, India was robbed of its balanced final XI. India had to fly in Anshul Kamboj and straightaway threw him into the XI, and since then, he has struggled to meet the demands of Test cricket. "Shubman Gill is on his first trip to England as a batter and has also been thrown into the deep end as captain, carrying immense responsibility. He fought well across the first three Tests, but this game feels slightly beyond India, considering the challenges and resources. India's bowling was hampered by Akash Deep's unavailability -- he picked up 10 wickets in the last Test but missed out due to injury. Anshul Kamboj came in, but struggled to rise to the demands of Test cricket," Manjrekar said on JioHotstar. Manjrejkar reiterated his stance that spinners are often an afterthought for the Indian team. The pace bowling quartet Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Kamboj and Shardul Thakur have combined to bowl 83 overs and returned with three wickets. On the other hand, the ball-tweaking duo of Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar scalped four wickets in 52 overs. "One area India could've improved is their bowling combination, seamers bowled nearly 82 overs for just three wickets, while spin got four wickets in just 52 overs. That's something they'll need to reassess. The standout, though, was Mohammed Siraj -- it was great to see him bowl with such heart right till the end," he added. England ended the third day on a high with 544/7 on the board in reply to India's 387, enjoying a healthy lead of 186 runs. With skipper Ben Stokes unbeaten on the crease, he will look to pile up as many as he can to take an unassailable 3-1 lead in the series. (ANI)
