Gauteng climber set to represent SA in Europe

Luke Westman, a Fourways climber, has once again made Gauteng proud by qualifying to take part in two major International Federation of Sport Climbing (IFSC) competitions this June in Europe.
Westman was part of the Youth World Championship Team, who travelled to China in August 2024, where he obtained his Protea Youth Climbing Colours.
'After getting to compete at the Youth World Championships last year, I'm both nervous and excited to be able to compete in the Open IFSC World Cups. While there's some pressure, I feel incredibly privileged to represent my country on the world stage.
'Competing in Bern, Switzerland, from June 13 to 15, and Innsbruck, Austria, from June 25 to 29, is a dream come true. I'm ready to embrace the challenge, push my limits, and grow as an athlete among the best in the world.'
The IFSC Innsbruck World Cup is arguably the most prestigious and favourite event for athletes to take part in. Westman, who also coaches younger climbers for local club, INSIDEedge Climbing, trains 5–6 days a week at CityROCK in Randburg, under the watchful guidance of head coach Devin Sender.
'I am very proud of Luke, who started his journey with me at the young age of 9, at Crawford Lonehill. His talent and hard work have paid off, making him one of the top climbers in our country. I am privileged to be his coach,' said Sender.
These competitions do not come cheap, and athletes have the responsibility of funding their trips 100%, with the help of sponsors. Gauteng Climbing secretary Bridgette Erdey said: 'Luke is one of many Gauteng Climbing athletes who will be travelling overseas, representing the South African Climbing Federation and IFSC Africa this year.
'Families who fund these trips make huge sacrifices to make the dreams of these athletes come true, if it is even at all possible. As a province, we want to stand behind Luke and the rest of our athletes, and call on public and private entities to assist with funds to keep South Africa and Gauteng on the world stage. You can do so by contacting Carmen Bouwer on president@gauteng-climbing.co.za.'

QuanWessels athletes to represent SA at IMMAF Youth World Championships in Abu Dhabi

A group of rising young athletes from the QuanWessels Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) Academy in Sunninghill have earned their place on the international stage, following standout performances at the MMA South African National Championships. Several members of the team have been selected to represent South Africa at the prestigious International Mixed Martial Arts Federation (IMMAF) Youth World Championships, taking place in Abu Dhabi this July. Under the banner of Mixed Martial Arts South Africa (MMASA), the national championships showcased the country's top junior talent, and QuanWessels made their mark. 'It is with great pride, watching our boys mature into quality junior athletes with 10 years of planning coming into fruition,' said coach Norman 'Chef' Wessels. 'They have done the hours and continue to grow, learn, and mature in our programme. All they need to do now is get on top, stay on top, finish, and win.' The IMMAF Youth World Championships is the premier stage for young mixed martial artists aged 8 to 17, bringing together top athletes from across the globe. For many, it represents a once-in-a-lifetime chance to compete internationally. For Nicholas Sears (13), the road to nationals was not without obstacles. 'It was a major struggle to balance training for nationals while studying for exams at the same time. I just put my head down and dealt with it. Did what I needed to do.' When asked what he would say to his future self before stepping into the cage in Dubai, he said: 'You are gonna 'Fight to the Death' no matter what happens.' 'I am a lot more confident and comfortable walking around, knowing I can defend myself. I am very excited to compete for South Africa, and to see how I compare to other athletes in other countries.' Even athletes not on the national team, like Stefan van Rooyen, are making the journey to Abu Dhabi to support their teammates. 'Before a big fight, I stay calm by listening to music, doing some light stretching, and visualising the match in my head.' As for his inspiration in the sport, he named UFC star Paddy Pimblett. 'He's fearless, entertaining, and always brings energy to the cage.' For Tiano Marko Massimo Frau, another standout competitor, the opportunity means everything. 'I feel really good. It is really a huge and a great opportunity for me to show the world that, as a South African, we can compete at the highest levels. Never give up, through any struggle, keep training and you will persevere.' 'We're calling on businesses, sponsors, and supporters to help get our kids to the world championships,' said Wessels. 'These children are making South Africa proud. They just need a little help to get there.' Details: [email protected] Follow us on our Whatsapp channel, Facebook, X, Instagram and TikTok for the latest updates and inspiration! Have a story idea? Johannesburg teen to represent SA at Youth World Climbing Championships in Finland

Roux Wentzel (14) from Helpmekaar Kollege in Johannesburg has recently been chosen to represent the South African Protea Climbing team at the International Federation of Sport Climbing Youth World Climbing Championships in July in Helsinki, Finland. The climber who began the sport two years ago said his latest accolade is a silver medal he received from last year's national championships, Rosebank Killarney Gazette reports. Roux explained the process of being selected: 'To be selected to compete at the Youth World Championships, you have to make the podium at the Youth World Championship selection event that was held in Johannesburg this year. 'For speed climbing specifically, you also have to make a cut-off time that depends on your category.' The climber said that because it would be his first year competing internationally, he did not have any goals in terms of how far he wanted to rank, but simply wanted to climb faster than he ever had and enjoy the experience.
