David Gray repaying Hibs debt to 'wonderful' people he wants rewarded for avoiding the easy decision

The capital outfit picked up a 1-1 draw on the road at Midtjylland as they bid to make full use of home advantage in the return
David Gray has watched the Gordon family pile their money into Hibs and now he wants to reward them with an extended European run.

The capital side got a 1-1 draw with Midtjylland last week and are looking to make full use of home advantage going into Thursday's second leg Europa League qualifier.

The late Ron Gordon bought the club back in 2019 and although he passed away in 2023 his family, including his wife, Kit, and son, Ian, continue to bankroll the Leith outfit.

The Gordon family has had very little in return in that time until Gray led them to third last season and back into Europe.
Gray said: 'Absolutely. It's the rewards for the hard work and the effort that they put into it and the backing, and the togetherness - and it runs right through the club.

'The whole Gordon family. Kit, the passion she shows, they're really good people as well, that's the big thing.
'Wonderful people that are desperate to be successful and want to move this club forward all the time.
'They're brilliant people to work for from that point of view as well.'

The Hibs legend also knows he owes a debt to the Gordon family, which he hopes he is now paying off.
He is well aware that they could have pulled the trigger when his team were sitting bottom of the table.
They refused to panic and are now reaping the rewards.

Gray stated: 'Yes, I think it's something that I've spoken a lot about, the support since the Gordon family took over the football club, even from afar when I haven't been the manager - every single manager being backed under the ownership in terms of financial and everything that comes with it.
'I've certainly felt it in a short period of time, even just the backing during that difficult time.
'It would have been really easy, with my record that I had early on in the season, for there to be a change.

'Because I wasn't delivering, to the point that it was acceptable for the club, I knew that.
'So I thank the ownership for that, for sticking with me through the periods.
'This is the reward off the back of that.

'European football is where he always wants to bring the club, he always wants to take the club forward and he wants to see his team play at the highest possible level.
'European football is certainly the next step for that and then we want to try and compete at this level, which is another challenge that we're working towards every single day.'

Hibs are riding the crest of a wave and although Gray might get a lot of the glory it is very much a team effort with everyone in it together.
The head coach confirmed: 'Yes, I think that's it and that comes down to the group, the individuals.
'But the biggest thing and what I put the success a lot down to last season was yes, you need good players. You need good players that are buying into what you're doing, players that want to improve.

'But I had good characters, I had good types in there all the time that drove standards every single day and then the togetherness that comes off that, if you can work hard and stay humble during the highs and make sure you keep, every time you step on the training pitch, trying to improve - I think that's something that we definitely benefited from last year.
'I think one thing that was very consistent with last year was I always believed in the group.
'I always believed in what we had and what we were doing and the thing that kept me going was the players.

'The players kept me going because I never ever felt for one minute that they weren't all into what we were doing.
'I wasn't seeing things that made me doubt that it would turn, so having that belief and then having the support from above to trust in that, I was able to demonstrate why I believed it would turn.'

Hibs fans are longing for their first taste of European group stage football. If they can shock Midtjylland again then they would take on Norwegian side Fredrikstad.
If not they would drop into the Conference League where they would be likely to face Partizan Belgade who are 2-0 up on Oleksandriya.
Gray knows Thursday against Midtjylland has the makings of another special European evening.
Gray excitedly added: 'Absolutely, they're the nights that players will remember, fans will remember, sell-out crowds, European football.
'Anyone I've ever spoken to, I was even speaking to wee Gav (kit man Gavin Gillies) earlier today, he talks about European nights under the lights being what he remembers as a Hibs supporter.
'He says they're the best nights he's ever been involved in in football so to bring the nights back would be special - if you've got an opportunity to be successful.'

Gray delighted as Hibs respond to Midtjylland loss with win at Dundee

David Gray praised Hibernian for making light of their European exertions to kick off their William Hill Premiership campaign with a sure-footed 2-1 win away to Dundee. The Easter Road boss admitted it was a 'difficult' decision to make just one change to the side that started Thursday's extra-time defeat by Midtjylland in the Europa League. However, Gray was rewarded with a strong display as Kieron Bowie's first-half double proved enough to overcome a Dee side who pulled one back through Fin Robertson. 'I'm delighted because after everything the players put in Thursday night, everybody would be looking at today's game wondering would there be a hangover, how will the players react the first time they went Thursday-Sunday,' the manager said. 'The players reacted in the best possible way with a real professional performance. I thought we controlled the game from start to finish.' Gray was heartened to see recently-capped Scotland forward Bowie get off the mark so early in the campaign after he endured an injury-disrupted first season at Hibs. 'That's the reason he was brought to the club,' he said. 'He's suited to Scottish football as well, with the physicality, he really enjoys that side to the game. 'The confidence levels will be high with the Scottish recognition as well, which is fantastic for him on a personal note, but he's working hard every day, he's getting fitter, he's getting stronger and really benefiting from a strong pre-season.' Gray was typically coy when asked about the future of defender Lewis Miller, who is understood to be close to joining Blackburn. The Australian is currently recovering from injury. 'There has been interest in him, but right now he's still a Hibs player and until he's not, my focus is on trying to get him back on the pitch as quick as we can,' he said. Dundee boss Steven Pressley said he saw some 'green shoots' of recovery against the Hibees after his side's demoralising Premier Sports Cup group-stage exit last month. However, the 51-year-old, taking charge of a match in Scotland's top flight for the first time in 15 years, felt they were 'nervy' in possession and was keen to stress the scale of the task he inherited in June. 'Almost every single goal from the team of last season was not there today,' said Pressley, whose talismanic captain Simon Murray missed out with injury. 'It's a big rebuild. I'm not trying to pull the wool over anybody's eyes. 'There's a lot of hard work ahead. We probably need another six players in to bolster the squad and it's a real challenge.' Possible Hibs opponents in Conference League play off in hunt for league phase

It's all eyes on UEFA's newest competition for the Easter Road side, after running FC Midtjylland close in their Europa League second qualifying round. They lost 3-2 on aggregate after taking the Danes to extra time, who relied heavily on individual magic to see them through. Now Serbian opposition stand between Hibs and a play-off chance. Scottish football is desperate for a coefficient boost and Hibs progress to the league phase would provide that, on top of a financial boost to the Easter Road coffers. The draw takes place on Monday and Football Rankings has the club on the seeded side of the draw should they succeed against Partizan in their third round quest. A full list of seedings and any groupings becomes available on the morning of the draw but as it stands, here's the calibre of opposition that could await Hibs.

Hibs manager David Gray applauded his players' application as they took just one game to get what they needed five matches to earn last season. It's the first weekend in August and the Easter Road side already have their first victory of the league campaign. Now he knows the trick is to follow it up quickly with another victory, against Kilmarnock next weekend ideally. That was the problem last season. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad It took until November last year for Hibs to collect a second league win, something which put Gray under almost intolerable pressure. This run included a 4-1 defeat at Dens Park against Dundee, who Hibs dispatched with considerable ease at the same venue in between tough European assignments to give their league campaign instant uplift. Hibs defender Rocky Bushiri overpowers Dundee forward Ashley Hay during the 2-1 win. | SNS Group 'It was a big part of my motivation today,' Gray acknowledged, when asked about last season's initial struggles. 'I heard a lot of people saying last season, 'imagine we had just a poor start, not a very poor start last season'. 'So the mindset of the players is, here's the first opportunity to try and put that right. It was always going to be a difficult day coming up here because of Thursday night (against Midtjylland), people looking at it saying, how can Hibs bounce back? Is there going to be a hangover? Have they got a squad to do it? And this was the best way to answer that. I thought it was a real professional performance and a fully deserved the three points." Hibs head to Serbia, where they face Partizan Belgrade on Thursday in a Conference League qualifying tie, on the back of a win earned by a quickfire first-half double from the impressive Kieron Bowie. 'I think he showed that's the reason why he was brought to the football club, because of the qualities he's got,' said Gray. 'You've seen that, I've mentioned a lot about being suited to Scottish football as well. The physicality, he really enjoys that side to the game and he was always one that was going to benefit from a strong pre-season. We're getting (the benefit of) that just now.' Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Hibs don't rotate despite busy schedule Gray stuck with ten of the 11 players who lost in heart-breaking fashion to Midtjylland on Thursday at Easter Road. 'You can get caught up in how many minutes players have played, the emotional side of it,' he said. 'It's not as if we have gone Sunday, Thursday, Sunday, Thursday, Sunday, Thursday. So the players are fresh, they're ready to go and they're all playing with confidence. They want to try and stay in the team.' Only Jamie McGrath was left out and he came on in the second half for Junior Hoilett, who had replaced him in the starting XI. Gray was later asked about right back Lewis Miller, who has been linked with a move to Blackburn Rovers and is currently sidelined with injury. "It's been well documented there has been (interest) but right now he's still a Hibs player," said Gray. "Until he's not, my focus is trying to get him back on the pitch as quick as we can." It was a dispiriting start for Dundee and in particular their fans, who booed the team off after watching them muster just two shots on goal, one of which was their counter from Fin Robertson when they were already 2-0 down. Hibs head coach David Gray gives out instructions at Dens Park. | SNS Group Pressley stressed that he's realistic and made the point that nearly all the goals from last season were out of the team. As well as the departed Lyall Cameron and Scott Tiffoney, captain Simon Murray was injured. The manager said he saw 'green shoots' but the team will need time, with reinforcements a must. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Murray's return from a knee injury sustained in last weekend's League Cup win over Montrose is also a matter of great urgency, with a trip to Ibrox to face Rangers looming.
