Gray delighted as Hibs respond to Midtjylland loss with win at Dundee
The Easter Road boss admitted it was a 'difficult' decision to make just one change to the side that started Thursday's extra-time defeat by Midtjylland in the Europa League.
However, Gray was rewarded with a strong display as Kieron Bowie's first-half double proved enough to overcome a Dee side who pulled one back through Fin Robertson.
'I'm delighted because after everything the players put in Thursday night, everybody would be looking at today's game wondering would there be a hangover, how will the players react the first time they went Thursday-Sunday,' the manager said.
'The players reacted in the best possible way with a real professional performance. I thought we controlled the game from start to finish.'
Gray was heartened to see recently-capped Scotland forward Bowie get off the mark so early in the campaign after he endured an injury-disrupted first season at Hibs.
'That's the reason he was brought to the club,' he said. 'He's suited to Scottish football as well, with the physicality, he really enjoys that side to the game.
'The confidence levels will be high with the Scottish recognition as well, which is fantastic for him on a personal note, but he's working hard every day, he's getting fitter, he's getting stronger and really benefiting from a strong pre-season.'
Gray was typically coy when asked about the future of defender Lewis Miller, who is understood to be close to joining Blackburn. The Australian is currently recovering from injury.
'There has been interest in him, but right now he's still a Hibs player and until he's not, my focus is on trying to get him back on the pitch as quick as we can,' he said.
Dundee boss Steven Pressley said he saw some 'green shoots' of recovery against the Hibees after his side's demoralising Premier Sports Cup group-stage exit last month.
However, the 51-year-old, taking charge of a match in Scotland's top flight for the first time in 15 years, felt they were 'nervy' in possession and was keen to stress the scale of the task he inherited in June.
'Almost every single goal from the team of last season was not there today,' said Pressley, whose talismanic captain Simon Murray missed out with injury.
'It's a big rebuild. I'm not trying to pull the wool over anybody's eyes.
'There's a lot of hard work ahead. We probably need another six players in to bolster the squad and it's a real challenge.'

Tributes paid to Lanarkshire journalist Martin Clark
The Uddingston man, who was a hockey umpire and stalwart of the local club, has been fondly remembered following his death aged 69. Warm tributes have been paid to well-respected Lanarkshire journalist and long-serving hockey umpire and coach Martin Clark following his sudden passing. Martin was sports editor at the Wishaw Press for 26 years, later going on to become editor of the Motherwell Times and a host of Scottish weekly newspapers during a media career spanning more than four decades; and was actively involved in a host of sports, especially hockey where he was an international-standard official. Journalism colleagues remembered his hardworking commitment to his newspaper titles and the communities they served, along with his support for colleagues and new staff; while Uddingston hockey club called him 'a much-loved member of the Uddy family', of which he had been a key part since his schooldays in the area. Uddingston resident Martin, 69, died suddenly last week. Hundreds of messages of condolence have been shared with his beloved wife Gina, daughter Fiona and her partner John, and across social media by his many friends, journalism and sporting colleagues. Martin had begun his journalism career on leaving Uddingston Grammar in 1973, initially at the Evening Times in Glasgow and later as a trainee journalist position at the Rutherglen Reformer while studying at Napier College in Edinburgh. He transferred three months later to sister title the Wishaw Press – marking the start of 26 years at the newspaper, where he became a well-known community figure as he served as community reporter, sports reporter and deputy editor, including playing a key role in the production process of the weekly title. Among the many highlights of his years at the title were covering Motherwell's 1991 Scottish Cup victory, the early career and rise of young Wishaw snooker player John Higgins to becoming world champion, and his running of a hugely-popular annual schools' football festival. He moved on in 2000 to become editor of the Lanarkshire People, later Lanarkshire Extra; then took the helm of the Motherwell Times and Bellshill Speaker, later adding responsibility for further titles including the Cumbernauld News & Kilsyth Chronicle, as well as being appointed deputy editor at the Falkirk Herald and Linlithgow Gazette. Martin concluded his 47-year journalism career as editor of the JPI Media group's portfolio of small Scottish weekly titles, responsible for 22 local newspapers across the country, ranging from Fraserburgh in the north-east to Galloway in south-west Scotland. Former colleague and Wishaw Press editor Elaine Singer said: 'I had known Martin since student days, then as a colleague with Scottish & Universal Newspapers in Lanarkshire [now Reach]. His advice and guidance was always wise, with the Wishaw community at its heart, his loyalty and commitment steadfast. 'Every year he organised a schools' football tournament; I remember the then-Motherwell manager, Alex McLeish, was so engrossed watching the teams play he stayed all afternoon at Wishaw sports centre! 'When Martin got his editor's job, he coached his replacement as sports editor so the transition was seamless – he was a total team player and was active in the National Union of Journalists for many years. He recently met up with retired colleagues and shared stories including exploits of strikes in the 1970s and 1980s.' She added: 'Everyone who knew Martin has expressed shock at his untimely passing, pass on condolences to wife Gina and daughter Fiona, and will cherish the fondest memories of a highly respected colleague.' Martin first met future wife Gina through a local badminton club, and the couple were married at Viewpark parish church in May 1983, later going on to welcome daughter Fiona. His family have been inundated with messages and 'amazing' support since his sudden passing – and told how he had still been actively involved in sports and activities including hockey, walking, gym sessions, aqua aerobics, yoga and dog walking and had been 'loving retirement and making the most of each day' since stepping down from his media career five years ago. Martin had been a valued member of Uddingston hockey club for more than half a century, as a player until well into his 60s and serving for decades as a respected umpire, gaining accreditation from world governing body the FIH and travelling all over the UK and to Gibraltar to officiate and share his skills. He coached new umpires and mentored them through sporting qualifications, and was heavily involved with the club's walking hockey team, leading players to festivals and sharing his love of the sport with generations of club members. Uddingston players and members observed a minute's silence ahead of their final summer games in Martin's memory, with the club saying they have been 'deeply saddened' by his death and remembering his 'life and lasting impact'. The club posted on Facebook: 'Martin's love for sport was unwavering. Whether playing cricket, umpiring or playing hockey, or supporting others in their sporting journey, he brought warmth, kindness, and a generous spirit to everything he did. 'He was a well-loved member of the Uddy family for over 50 years – a dedicated coach, a thoughtful mentor, and a true friend to many across the club and wider sporting community. [He] gave so much to our community, and [his] presence will be greatly missed.' Bob MacIntyre makes major Ryder Cup move ahead of FedEx playoffs bid
The Scottish star gains more key ground in the chase for Bethpage Black and the huge clash with USA In-line Bob MacIntyre has edged ever closer to an automatic Ryder Cup spot as he now heads into the pivotal FedEx Cup playoffs. The Scottish star made his return to action at the Wyndham Championship after The Open and his four-under par total after another successful made cut in the United States landed him a tied-44th placed result at Sedgefield Country Club. MacIntyre's efforts saw him slightly extend his advantage over third-placed Tommy Fleetwood in the European points standings with just three events remaining before the cut-off point. Rory McIlroy has already secured his place in Luke Donald 's side for the clash against the United States at Bethpage at the end of next month. But the next five automatic slots are still open and MacIntyre sits directly behind the Grand Slam superstar in the list and is next in line to clinch one of the guaranteed places on offer for the team. The Oban star's result in Greensboro nudged his points total to 1355.84 from 1345.44 with Fleetwood on 1314.61. At this point, Tyrrell Hatton, Shane Lowry and Sepp Straka occupy the other three remaining automatic spots with the chase heating up over the upcoming FedEx events. Most notably movers in standings after Sedgefield were English pair Matt Fitzpatrick. The Sheffield star maintained his improved recent form with a Top 10 finish that saw him move up a spot to 12th in the standings as he hunts a fourth appearance in the Ryder Cup. Rai, who is looking to make his debut for Europe, came fifth at the Wyndham in an impressive defence of the title he won in 2024 to go up two places to 12th. Runaway tournament winner Cameron Young bagged the event to break his PGA Tour title duck and rocket into contention to make Keegan Bradley's USA side for the clash. MacIntyre and many of his Euro colleagues now get set for the trio of FedEx Cup play-offs with the opening tournament coming at the FedEx St Jude Championship in Memphis. McIlroy has opted not to take part, but the majority of Donald's team contenders will tee it up in the chase to be in the Top 50 in the FedEx standings at the end of the tournament and move onto the following week's BMW Championship in Maryland. Should MacIntyre maintain his good form which has seen him secure two top 10 finishes in Majors this term, he is almost certain to be at the season-ending Tour Championship at East Lake in Atlanta on the weekend where the points list is finalised. Donald's team will be completed with the captain making six wild-card picks at the end of this month and the squad will be together as a unit at Wentworth for the BMW PGA Championship at the start of next month as the skipper and his stars begin their final tune-up for the eagerly-anticipated encounter against Bradley's boys in New York.

Rangers title hero sparks ‘crisis' as current club ‘can't reach player or his agent' amid major stand-off

That's according to reports out of Turkey, which claim there's currently a stand-off between the player and Trabzonspor. Along with Rangers teammate John Lundstram, the defender made the move to the Turkish giants after his contract at Ibrox expired. The Croatia international had enjoyed a successful four-year stint in Glasgow and played a key role in the Gers' Premiership title triumph in 2021. He also won the Scottish Cup and the League Cup during his time with the Light Blues. But the past year has been nothing short of a nightmare for the left-back. He struggled for game time at Trabzonspor and barely started a game. Largely frozen out of things at the club, he was handed a fresh start by La Liga outfit Leganes, who took Barisic to Spain on loan. But the nightmare continued for him. Barisic sustained a serious knee injury just minutes into his Leganes debut against Valencia and his season was declared over. He still hasn't returned to full training with Trabzonspor. He was one of the overseas players named listed earlier in the summer who Trabzonspor were looking to move on to free up some space to bring in new foreign stars this transfer window. Barisic's for Gers pal Lundstram was also named and he has left the club, joining Hull City on loan. But Barisic remains but it's clear Trabzonspor want him out the door. Several Turkish reports claim that he simply is not part of manager Fatih Tekke's plans and they want to move him on. But it doesn't appear to be proving easy. Turkish outlet Taka say that the Barisic situation has led to a 'crisis.' They say Trabzonspor have made it clear they want to 'part with the player' in order to free up another squad spot for an overseas star. But in their recent report, Taka claim that the club have been unable to reach Barisic or his agent. They further claim that in a previous conversation, Barisic had asked for just under £1.5million in order to terminate his contract.
