Mona McSharry and Danielle Hill end World Championships campaigns with heat exits
Olympic bronze medallist Mona McSharry and Danielle Hill have finished their schedules at the World Aquatics Championships in Singapore with exits in their respective heats on Saturday. Having suffered from a stomach bug which saw her out of the pool for two days, 24-year-old McSharry was on the blocks for the women's 50m breaststroke heats. The Sligo swimmer finished in 31.28 to finish eighth in her heat, 25th overall, to miss out on Saturday's semi-finals. 'I've been pretty sick and it's tough to get out of bed the last few days, so considering that I was able to get up and race today, I can only be happy with it,' said McSharry. READ MORE 'Sadly it's not the end to the worlds I wanted, but we just kind of take it and accept it.' Despite a challenging few days in Singapore, McSharry said she remains motivated to keep swimming. 'Coming after the Olympics last year, I was just ready for a break, and I do think that kind of taking five months off really helped me power through this season, and honestly I'm kind of excited to just get back in and keep training, maybe take a short break, but then kind of get straight back into it and just prepare for the World Cups (October) and everything else coming up. 'I kind of had a real realisation, kind of at this competition, that I'm not ready to be done yet, and you know, I'm not cutting myself short or anything, so I'm waiting until I really feel like I want to be finished, and if that's not yet, then that's fine. I'll carry on as long as I'm excited and enjoying it.' Earlier in the session, Hill clocked 25.24 in the women's 50m freestyle, a shade off her season best of 25.22. Her heat time put her 25th overall, outside qualification for Saturday afternoon's semi-finals. 'It's a bittersweet one again, because you swim your best time and you're in there,' the Larne woman said after her final heat. 'I've got to find a way, as I have been trying to the past couple years, to get those best performances in the morning. But yeah, I have had a long season. to be here is one thing, but yeah, I've got to find a way now and sit down and try and get those fast performances in the morning.' Looking ahead to the new season, she added: 'It's actually probably the first time where I like wish the new season would just start tomorrow. 'I feel ready to go already and just like want to put my head back down and fix the things that I know I can fix.' Shane Ryan was also in action on the penultimate day of the championships, finishing first in his heat in the men's 50m backstroke in 24.96 to place 19th overall. Ellen Walsh will return to the pool on Sunday for the heats of the women's 400m individual medley (3.35am Irish time, followed by the final at 1.15pm), before John Shortt, Eoin Corby, Jack Cassin and Evan Bailey will represent Ireland in the third heat of the men's 4x100m medley relay (4.02am Irish time, followed by the final at 1.33pm).

Lions player ratings: Tadhg Beirne and Tom Curry best of the tourists in Sydney washout
15 Hugo Keenan Remarkably resolute in the face of the Wallabies utter dominance on the night, he was unyielding in defence, chased everything, won most of his duels and made a try saving tackle. Rating: 7 14 Tommy Freeman He will be disappointed to be caught in no man's land for the Dylan Pietsch try, biting in rather than putting his faith in Jamison Gibson-Park to make the tackle. Robust in a couple of carries before going off for a HIA and not returning. Rating: 5 13 Huw Jones While he did not get a chance to demonstrate his attacking qualities, he stuck manfully to his task in defence and eventually finished the game on the wing. Rating: 6 12 Bundee Aki A couple of good early carries but then was caught standing up for a maul turnover and a couple of knocks-on in contact and a few missed tackles. Outplayed by Len Ikitau. Australia were utterly dominant up front and in the monsoon conditions there was little the Scot could do to turn the tide. Ridiculous penalty given against him in the James Ryan incident, symptomatic of the rank officiating. Rating: 6 2 Dan Sheehan Good in general play, the Aussies got after the Lions' lineout superbly pinching a handful of throws, penalised for coming in the side of a ruck near the Wallaby line. Escaped punishment when clearing out Tom Lynagh at a ruck which incensed the Aussies. Rating: 6 3 Tadhg Furlong His ninth consecutive start in a Test match and it'll be one of unrelenting frustration in the sense that he wasn't rewarded for what appeared to be an edge in the scrum. Worked hard for his team on both sides of the ball. Rating: 6 4 Maro Itoje (capt) Beaten to a lineout and conceded a penalty, the Lions captain was playing his way back into the game when he was forced off for a HIA in the first half, which he ultimately failed. Rating: 6 5 James Ryan Mistimed a tackle on Will Skelton, caught a knee as he got his head on the wrong side and was knocked out in the process. A worthy official player of the series. Rating: 8 7 Tom Curry Heroic in defeat, gave everything in body and soul until he could give no more when taken off with an injury, carried with intent and tackled with great ferocity. A brilliant series from an outstanding flanker. Rating: 8 8 Jack Conan If there was one area of the team that was more effective in a performance in which the Lions were second best in so many areas it was the individual work-rate of the backrow. Power in contact, carrying and tackling. Rating: 7 Replacements The Lions had to go to the bench early, losing two players to failed HIAs and another taken off on a stretcher. Ellis Genge and Jac Morgan won early penalties after their arrivals making the desired impact, with the Welshman also scoring a try but didn't get the same bounce effect as last week. Rating: 7 Coach Andy Farrell will be disappointed with the manner of the defeat more so than simply losing a Test match. Lions were outmuscled. It won't take away from masterminding a series win, which was the ultimate goal. Rating: 7

Lions ratings: Furlong and Beirne best of the Irish as Lions downed in final test
History proved elusive for the Lions in Sydney as Australia took the third test 22-12 in stormy conditions. Retiring Nic White and the powerful Will Skelton and Taniela Tupou bossed proceedings for the home side, as the Lions leave on a disappointing note. Here's how we rated the Lions players. 15. Hugo Keenan – 7 Last weekend's hero was solid in the backfield and grew into the game. Took a superb catch from Finn Russell's up and under that paved the way for Jac Morgan's try. 14. Tommy Freeman – 6 Got his hands on the ball and made a few yards but had to work off little possession. Departed with a bloody nose and a failed head injury assessment before half time. 13. Huw Jones – 6 Did well in defence against the dynamic Aussie centres before moving to the wing when Owen Farrell replaced Freeman. Chipped out on the full when he should have done better. 12. Bundee Aki – 5.5 Made for a day like today with his direct carrying ability but fumbled close to his own line and conceded a penalty. Overan the attacking line before Max Jorgensen's score. 11. Blair Kinghorn – 6 Contested well in the air but should have held onto the pass that led to Jorgensen's try. Poor second half as the Aussies got on the front foot. 10. Finn Russell – 6.5 Not up to the standard he had established in the opening two Tests, but conditions naturally played their part. Will still be disappointed with basic knock-on. 9. Jamison Gibson-Park – 7 Kicked well and has been one of the Lions players of the series. 1. Andrew Porter – 6.5 Part of the pack that won and lost a few scrums and was in the mix at the breakdown and the pushing and shoving. Replaced by Ellis Genge at the start of the second half. 2. Dan Sheehan – 6 Started the game with an incredible stat of 39 of 40 successful lineouts on tour but a number went astray today. Didn't impose himself as usual. Returned on 68 minutes after Rónan Kelleher's yellow. 3. Tadhg Furlong – 7 Loved his outing in the conditions and with the Australians more in possession, had plenty of opportunity to make tackles. 4. Maro Itoje – 6 Battled hard but was second best to the Australia second rows. Withdrawn on 28 minutes after failing a head injury assessment and had made 12 tackles by that stage. 5. James Ryan – 7 Another who fought for hard yards and also made 12 tackles, while the Ireland lock also took four lineouts before an unfortunate collision with Will Skelton at the start of the second half. 6. Tadhg Beirne – 7 Started with a brilliant lineout steel and won an important jackal penalty as well. Used well on the lineout. 7. Tom Curry – 7 Enjoyed a good fight with the Australia back row, busy in the close-quarter stuff. Withdrawn through injury with 10 minutes left. 8. Jack Conan – 7.5 Carried with intent and had plenty of involvements. A thoroughly satisfying tour from the Leinster number 8. Replacements: 16. Rónan Kelleher (for Sheehan 58) – 5 Got a yellow card for repeated team penalites on 69 minutes. 17. Ellis Genge (for Porter 43) – 6.5 Gave some impact after the pause for lightning. 18. Will Stuart (for Furlong 58) – 6 Got through his shift and credited with the late consolation try. 19. Ollie Chessum (for Itoje 28) – 7 Loved the physicality. Helped with Morgan's try. 20. Jac Morgan (for Ryan 43) – 6 Took his try well but conceded a late costly penalty for a high tackle. 21. Ben Earl (for Conan 64) – 6 Saw out the final stages but couldn't make an impact. 23.
