EU unveils bigger long-term budget but risks fight with farmers

Business Recorder13 hours ago
BRUSSELS: The EU executive proposed on Wednesday a two-trillion-euro long-term budget bazooka focused on tackling overseas competition and Russian aggression at Europe's borders — at the risk of a new showdown with farmers.
Presenting the $2.3-trillion 2028-2034 budget blueprint to reporters in Brussels, EU chief Ursula von der Leyen said it 'will be the most ambitious ever proposed'.
The plans seek to bolster Europe's security and ramp up its competitiveness, while paying off debts from a massive Covid-era loan as of 2028 — against a backdrop of soaring trade tensions with the bloc's biggest commercial partner, the United States.
The European Commission put 451 billion euros on the table under a broad 'competitiveness' tag that encompasses defence and space — together allocated 131 billion euros, a five-fold increase.
The budget plan earmarks up to 100 billion euros for the reconstruction of war-torn Ukraine — as well as substantial new 'flexibility' funds kept available in event of crises.

European shares rise after four-day drop as ABB shines

European shares rose on Thursday after four consecutive sessions of losses, supported by strong quarterly results from Switzerland's ABB and optimism over a potential trade deal between the United States and the European Union. The pan-European STOXX 600 index up 0.8% as of 0718 GMT. ABB jumped 8.2% after the engineering firm posted record quarterly order intake, driven by strong US demand and for products used in data centres to support artificial intelligence. Shares of rivals Siemens and Schneider Electric added 3.6% and 5.8% respectively. The three firms were among the top boosts to the European benchmark index. European chipmakers also recouped some losses from the previous session as TSMC, the world's main producer of advanced AI chips, posted record profit in the second quarter. ASML rose 1.7% following 11% drop on Wednesday. In trade, EU's trade chief Maros Sefcovic headed to Washington on Wednesday for tariff talks, and is expected to meet US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, an EU spokesperson told Reuters. Meanwhile, investors awaited for clarity on US-EU trade talks as the bloc readied retaliatory measures if negotiations with Washington failed. On Wednesday US President Donald Trump eased market anxiety after denying reports that said was planning to fire Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell soon. He confirmed he floated the idea with Republican lawmakers and renewed his criticism of the Fed chief for not cutting interest rates. Among other stocks, Evolution gained 6.5% after the Swedish gaming technology company reported its second-quarter results.

Gold prices slip as dollar firms, Trump eases Powell uncertainty

Gold prices dipped on Thursday, pressured by a firmer dollar and easing market tensions after US President Donald Trump said it was 'highly unlikely' he would dismiss Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell. Spot gold was down 0.2% at $3,340.79 per ounce, as of 0400 GMT. US gold futures fell 0.4% to $3,347.10. The dollar index edged 0.1% higher against its rivals, making greenback-priced bullion more expensive for other currency holders. 'Gold dropped $3,340/oz as the US dollar regained ground following eased uncertainty over the Federal Reserve chair's position' said Jigar Trivedi, senior commodity analyst at Reliance Securities. Trump is open to the idea of firing Fed's Powell, a source told Reuters on Wednesday. However, Trump said on Wednesday that he is not planning to fire Powell, but kept the door open to the possibility and renewed his criticism of the central bank chief for not lowering interest rates. Data showed that US producer prices were unexpectedly unchanged in June as an increase in the cost of goods because of tariffs on imports was offset by weakness in services. 'June's flat US PPI reading indicated steady wholesale prices, suggesting tariffs may be impacting the economy less than initially feared,' Trivedi said. On the trade front, EU trade chief Maros Sefcovic headed to Washington on Wednesday for tariff talks, an EU spokesperson told Reuters, adding that he will meet US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. SPDR Gold Trust, the world's largest gold-backed exchange-traded fund, said its holdings rose 0.33% to 950.79 tons on Wednesday from 947.64 tons in the prior session. Elsewhere, spot silver edged 0.1% higher to $37.98 per ounce. Platinum rose 0.2% to $1,419.67 and palladium nudged 0.1% lower to $1,230.14.

Ukraine's drones target Moscow, other regions, Russia's defence ministry says

Russian air defence units destroyed 122 Ukrainian drones overnight that targeted the capital Moscow and scores of other Russian regions, injuring at least one person, Russian authorities said on Thursday. More than half of the drones were destroyed over the Belgorod, Kursk and Bryansk regions that border Ukraine, the Russian defence ministry said on the Telegram messaging app. Three drones were destroyed over the Moscow region, it added. One person was lightly injured and a civilian facility sustained minor damage in the Smolensk region that borders Belarus, regional Governor Vasily Anokhin, said on Telegram. A Ukrainian drone attack on Wednesday killed three people and injured at least 17 others in the Belgorod region, regional Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said. Reuters could not independently verify the reports. There was no immediate comment from Ukraine. Russia and Ukraine have accused each other of targeting civilians, something both sides deny, in the course of the war, now well into its fourth year.
