Canada invites 503 foreigners through Express Entry for permanent residency

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) on June 23, 2025, invited 503 candidates to apply for permanent residence under the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP), in the fifth Express Entry draw of the month.
Candidates needed a minimum Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score of 742 and must have created their Express Entry profile before May 30, 2025, to be considered.
This draw follows earlier selections this month targeting candidates under the Canadian Experience Class (CEC) and category-based draws for healthcare and social services professionals.
Express Entry activity in 2025
As of June 23, IRCC has issued a total of 38,845 Invitations to Apply (ITAs) through Express Entry in 2025. A majority of these draws have focused on PNP and CEC candidates.
Breakdown of Express Entry draws in 2025 so far:
Provincial nominee program (PNP): 11
Canadian Experience Class (CEC): 5
French-language proficiency: 3
Healthcare and social services: 2
Education: 1
What candidates should do after receiving an ITA
Those invited on June 23 have 60 days to submit a complete application through their Express Entry account. The process involves:
• Collecting documents such as passports, English or French test scores, job reference letters, proof of funds, and police certificates
• Submitting the permanent residence application online
• Paying application fees (around CAD 1,365 per adult)
• Completing medical exams and providing biometrics if requested
IRCC targets a processing time of six months. Approved applicants will receive a Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR).
Those already in Canada may complete the process through a virtual landing. Others will need to travel to Canada to activate their permanent residence.
How the Provincial Nominee Program works
The PNP allows provinces and territories to nominate individuals for permanent residence based on regional labour market needs. Each participating province runs its own PNP streams with specific criteria and occupations in demand.
Some PNP streams are aligned with Express Entry, awarding nominated candidates an extra 600 CRS points, which nearly guarantees an ITA in a federal draw.
The program enables:
• Targeted selection of skilled workers and entrepreneurs
• Faster processing times in some streams
• Broader distribution of newcomers across Canada
Quebec does not take part in the PNP and has its own system for selecting economic immigrants.

How Badar Khan Suri Parented His Children From Immigration Detention Centre

Badar Khan Suri, the Georgetown University postdoctoral scholar, who had been arrested by immigration officers and faced deportation, had been in the custody of Immigration and Customs Enforcement for months. He was arrested on the charges of "actively spreading Hamas propaganda and promoting antisemitism on social media." Khan Suri "has close connections to a known or suspected terrorist, who is a senior advisor to Hamas," Department of Homeland Security spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin said in March on X. He explained how he helped manage his 5-year-old sons to get to terms with his absence. He credited his wife, Maphaz Ahmad Yousef, and called her a "blessing", since she was the support system for their children. "For my younger twins, I created a story they could hold on to: I told them I was traveling and had gotten lost somewhere in the clouds, trying to find my way back home," Khan Suri said in an email to NBC News. He said he took efforts to parent his three children "with love, creativity and resilience" from afar, while at detention. It has been a month now since his release from the ICE facility in Texas, after a judge ruled that his detention violated the First Amendment right to free speech and the Fifth Amendment right to due process. "For my family also, I feel the power dynamic changed. I am no more the provider or protector I once was," he said. "But I have survivor's clarity, as I saw the injustice. I am rebuilding my journey with meaning and truth." He also reflected how parenting from detention was a "heartbreaking" experience but it "kept him going". He has now returned to his regular parenting days, bringing his kids to the bus stop, and said that he has earned the privilege of being identified as the favourite parent in the household. "Even the twins say 'Baba' when I ask who they love more," he joked. "Before, it was always a clear 'Mama.'" He described how the first week in custody was a "nightmare". "That night, my wife was only able to bring back my belongings. My elder son only saw my bag returning home and not me," he said of the night of his arrest. "I was sad for my children, who had lost their father, their security cover, their ease in life." He told how his children kept aside food for him, expecting him to show up any moment. "They would draw pictures for me, and even save cupcakes or slices of pizza for me as if I might come back at any moment - they refused to let anyone else touch my share." Although his younger sons felt comforted by the stories of him travelling through skies, his 9-year-old older son understood more and had become more withdrawn. "I tried to bring humour into our conversations when I could," he said. "I'd tell him I had a PlayStation 4, a basketball court and a soccer field where I was, and he would laugh and ask questions about them." Suri was not even provided a bed at the detention centre, and used to sleep in the TV room where the television played from 5am to 2am, according to the petition. He also received halal food only after 5 days. "On April 2, officers came and told him that he had complained through his lawyer about his religious accommodations and asked him for more details," the petition said. "After Dr. Khan Suri reaffirmed his needs, he was given a prayer mat, a Quran, and provided a space on a bed in the dorm, outside of the TV room." He was classified as "requiring high security" and had to wear a bright-red uniform. He was told he fell under the category of "with a known criminal group". "Due to his classification and security protocols at the facility, Dr. Khan Suri is only permitted two hours per week of recreation," the petition said. To cope with the difficult conditions at the detention centre, he said, "I would write about them, I would think about them - like when their school bus would come, when would it return, what they do during the day, what they were drawing," he said. "When I saw drawings by kids of other detainees, I felt the love for my children." On the morning of his release, he said, "When they saw me, all three were shouting with joy, hugging and kissing me," he said. "For the twins, I had finally come back from the 'clouds.'"

PM Modi likely to dedicate new rail line to connect Mizoram's capital Aizawl soon

NEW DELHI: Mizoram's capital, Aizawl, is set to receive its first-ever rail connectivity with the completion of the 51.38 km Bairabi-Sairang broad gauge rail line. This long-awaited development, demanded by the people of Aizawl and surrounding areas, is expected to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the coming days. Once the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) grants approval for operations, a request will be submitted to the Prime Minister's Office for the inauguration. A senior official confirmed that the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) is working to make the rail line operational, connecting Aizawl to the Indian railway network and the rest of the country. "The railway has begun the countdown for the inauguration of this rail line, but a lot of other works, such as station construction and infrastructure development, are still ongoing. The inauguration is expected to take place later this year," added a senior railway official on Saturday. Officials have anticipated that the Bairabi-Sairang railway project could be dedicated to the nation by July, in line with Prime Minister Modi's vision of ensuring rail connectivity to regions that have remained isolated from the railway network.

Bairabi-Sairang line: Decade-long endeavour to connect Mizoram's capital Aizawl to rail network

Once operational, people can travel to Aizawl via Silchar by train, enjoying the natural beauty, cultural diversity, rolling hills and dense forests of the state, known as the 'Land of the Hill People'. 'The line is ready with the approval from the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CSR) and very soon, it will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi,' a Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) official said. New Delhi, Jun 28 (PTI) The completion of the 51.38-km Bairabi-Sairang rail line, which is set to connect Mizoram's capital Aizawl to the country's rail network, involved overcoming immense geographical and logistical challenges. Officials said the line establishes Mizoram as the fourth northeastern state with its capital city linked to the national railway network. According to the NFR, the line has 48 tunnels covering 12.853 km, 55 major and 87 minor bridges, five road overbridges and nine road underbridges, with one of the bridges numbered at 196 boasting of a height of 104 metres — 42 metres taller than the Qutub Minar. 'The new line will not only bring benefits to the people of Mizoram through improved transportation and accessibility, but also enhance regional mobility, along with boosting local tourism,' the NFR said. 'The path-breaking operation will also stimulate commercial activities, economic development and strengthen train connectivity across the northeastern states, generating employment opportunities and promoting small-business growth near stations and goods sheds,' it added. Talking about the commencement of the project, a senior official said Modi remotely unveiled the plaque for the new rail line from Bairabi to Sairang at a ceremony held at the Maligaon Railway Stadium on November 29, 2014. He added that the complete rail line was commissioned in four phases — Bairabi-Hortoki (16.72 km) commissioned in July 2024, Hortoki-Kawnpui (9.71 km) in June 2025, Kawnpui-Mualkhang (12.11 km) in June 2025 and Mualkhang-Sairang (12.84 km) in June 2025. 'The final stretch of the Bairabi-Sairang new line railway project, from Hortoki to Sairang, was thoroughly inspected by the CRS, Northeast Frontier Circle, between June 6 and June 10. This marks a significant milestone as it completes the entire 57.38-km rail line, paving the way for direct rail connectivity to Aizawl for the very first time,' another official said. The CRS authorised the operation of freight and passenger trains on the newly-laid broad gauge line between Bairabi and Hortoki on August 22, 2024. 'The revised sanctioned cost of the project is approximately Rs 5,021.45 crore,' the official said. PTI JP RC This report is auto-generated from PTI news service.
