NFC West places 3rd in NFL division rankings

Yahoo26-05-2025
The NFC West was among the most competitive divisions throughout the 2024 season. The 10-7 Seattle Seahawks were the lone double-digit win team to miss the playoffs. The fellow 10-7 Los Angeles Rams captured the division title via the tiebreaker.
The NFC West projects as a competitive division again in 2024. The San Francisco 49ers appear poised to bounce back from a disappointing campaign. The Arizona Cardinals are viewed as an ascending squad.

Pro Football Focus recently ranked all eight divisions around the league. The NFC West placed third, trailing just the AFC West and NFC North.
"Seattle faces more uncertainty, with Sam Darnold stepping in at quarterback and no D.K. Metcalf in the receiving corps," Trevor Sikkema wrote about the Seahawks. "If the Cardinals take the next step — and there's reason to believe they can — the NFC West could turn into a four-team slugfest. The Rams remain one of the toughest outs in the league, and if not for the blizzard in their playoff game against the Eagles, they might have been on their way to the NFC Championship Game."
The NFC West's cumulative over/under win total for the 2025 campaign is 37, tying the AFC West and NFC North for first place in PFF's projected division rankings. The Seahawks are certainly the biggest wild-card in the division. If John Schneider's sweeping offseason changes prove fruitful, the NFC West will be as competitive as ever in 2025.

Dak Prescott is "[expletive] motivated" to lead the Cowboys to the Super Bowl

On the day the Cowboys reported to training camp, left guard Tyler Smith made headlines when he said the Super Bowl is a 'realistic goal.' The Cowboys, of course, haven't played in an NFC Championship Game since 1995, which was their most recent Super Bowl appearance. New coach Brian Schottenheimer has echoed Smith's words, and quarterback Dak Prescott called it the goal and expectation every year despite the drought. 'Hell yeah. If [Smith] doesn't believe it, or anybody in that locker room doesn't don't believe it, then I would ask him to get out,' Prescott said Thursday, via Clarence Hill of All City DLLS. 'Schotty said it day one we showed up. If you don't want to win the Super Bowl, don't think we can win a Super Bowl, then don't come to Oxnard and you're in the wrong place. We know the standard when you wear the star. We know the expectations. And I credit Schotty for not shying away from it. I don't think anybody's ever heard me shy away from it. So it's just making sure everybody understands that. We have to think that. We have to manifest that. I appreciate Tyler for saying it and believing it.' Prescott heads into this 10th season with high expectations and the burden of a 2-5 postseason record. 'What I've done or accomplished really doesn't hold any weight to me,' Prescott said. 'That's the true fucking motivation. That's the truth . . . in your stomach. Like that's what's in your gut. It's obvious that I don't [have a Super Bowl] so it's not like, 'Oh my God, somebody knows there's a secret.' Like, my secrets out. No, fuck that. 'That's what pushes me to be better each and every day, and that's what I wanted. That's not just for myself. It's for everybody. You've got to love when your expectations align and your standards align with not only the coaches, the front office, but the fans as well. I think that's the great part about playing with the Cowboys is it says you're as good as your last game. Period. What are you doing for us now? And when your last games are playoff losses. . . . That's obvious. That's what sits on me, and it should sit on fans, too.'

Sam Darnold has the Seahawks believing, as he works to master the mundane

RENTON, Wash. — Sam Darnold wants to be consistent. This can take many forms, but for the 28-year-old Seattle Seahawks quarterback, achieving that goal requires mastering the part of his job that might seem boring to anyone attending training camp in hopes of seeing several long touchdown passes. Whether in seven-on-seven drills or team periods, Darnold spent most of the first two practices at the Virginia Mason Athletic Center scanning the field, assessing the coverage coach Mike Macdonald had deployed, then taking a short completion underneath. Advertisement Darnold can make every throw accurately to all three levels of the field. His Pro Bowl season in Minnesota last year was proof of that. His final two games with the Vikings — a Week 18 loss with the No. 1 seed on the line and a lopsided defeat in the wild-card round of the playoffs — illustrated where Darnold needs to grow. For him, growth is less about big-time throws and more about being fast, decisive and living to see another down. Darnold discussed this in a post-practice news conference Thursday, saying a recurring theme in the quarterback room is the importance of 'listening to my feet.' 'If my first read is not there, check it down,' he said. 'There's no reason to sit in the pocket a little longer because I think something might open up. Especially on first and second down, I'm just getting to the check down and (moving) on.' Doing so consistently is something Darnold said he's better equipped to do in his eighth season than he was earlier in his career. His familiarity with offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak's wide-zone, play-action-based scheme also helps. 'Playing within the system, it's built so that you're throwing concepts on certain hitches,' Darnold said. 'If I take a seven-step drop and I hitch one time, I'm supposed to be throwing a certain route. If I hitch again, I shouldn't be throwing that route anymore. 'It's all timing-based. When we say, 'Listen to our feet,' that's what we mean by that. If we're hitching two or three times on a longer route, usually it should be going down to a checkdown.' Some Seahawks WR routes on air for your viewing pleasure — Dugar, Michael-Shawn (@MikeDugar) July 24, 2025 Seattle's top decision-makers believe Darnold can take them to the promised land, which is why they signed him to a three-year deal worth $100.5 million after trading away Geno Smith. Every practice, offensive meeting and film session is about Darnold instilling that same belief in his new teammates. Darnold's first impression was a strong one. Advertisement 'From what I've seen from Minnesota and OTAs, it seems like he's going to be a great quarterback for us,' receiver Cody White said. Earlier this month, Darnold invited his skill players to train with him in California. Several players attended, including Cooper Kupp, Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Jake Bobo, John Rhys Plumlee, Eric Saubert, AJ Barner and White. They hung out for a few days and had throwing sessions at Oaks Christian. The former might be more important for their team chemistry than the latter, White said. 'Getting to know the person, I feel like that's the biggest part of getting together and doing things like that,' said White, who has been with the team primarily as a practice squad player since 2023. Saubert signed with Seattle this offseason after a free-agent visit that outlined a promising vision for the offense and his role within the scheme. The 31-year-old tight end spent last season with the San Francisco 49ers, who run a very similar offensive operation. Saubert was also with Kubiak in Denver during the 2022 season. He said he has heard nothing but good things about Darnold from those who have spent time with him on other teams. Flying over from Denver to work out was a perfect opportunity to spend quality time with his new QB1. 'I learned more about Sam and his process and how he prepares for games, and I'm not going to let someone like that down, you know?' Saubert said. 'That's my friend. I trust him, and he's going to trust me. … It's kind of nuanced, but it means a lot when you care about the guys you're playing with.' During minicamp in June, Darnold said he's not much of a vocal leader. Organizing the workout in California is an example of how he plans to lead the charge and establish a rapport with his teammates. 'When you understand each other off the field, that only helps the chemistry on the field,' Darnold said. Advertisement Barner said Darnold gave off 'quarterback vibes' during their time together. 'Business on the field and leadership off of it,' said Barner, who might be the team's new No. 1 tight end now that Noah Fant has been released. 'There was no going out; we had a good dinner. Not that I'd be against (going out), but it was a good time, I'm glad we did that.' As Darnold has shown teammates more of who he is both as a person and a player, their faith in him has grown. 'Sam's been phenomenal,' Barner said. 'Really takes the time to get with the guys. He's open about communication back and forth about what you see. His timing is really something I've really taken notice of and think he's very, very good at. When he hits his drop and when he sees it, the ball is going to be out before you're out of your break. I'm really excited to work with him. 'He's one of the best quarterbacks in the league, no doubt about it. We're going to show it this year.' Last year, Darnold practiced every day against the fourth-best defense in the league by points allowed per drive. In Macdonald's first year, the Seahawks were fifth by that same metric, and they're returning nearly every starter and rotation player from that unit (the most notable change is replacing Dre'Mont Jones with DeMarcus Lawrence). Macdonald's defense is constantly testing quarterbacks in practice with post-snap rotations, blitzes and disguises. 'Whenever you can go up against a defense (that) good schematically, combined with the great players we have on defense, it's going to help us,' Darnold said. Darnold was picked off once and came close to throwing a second interception during Thursday's practice. Riq Woolen undercut a crossing route and snagged a pass intended for Elijah Arroyo, but the ball bounced off the cornerback's hands and was hauled in by the rookie tight end for a short gain. Later in the team period, Darnold tried to throw a ball deep over the middle toward Smith-Njigba, but it was robbed from underneath by safety D'Anthony Bell. Advertisement Darnold has otherwise looked sharp through two training camp practices, which is to be expected in padless practices. Seattle will soon practice in pads, and Darnold and the entire offense will be easier to evaluate in full. But with or without pads, Darnold's consistency in his decision-making will determine whether he can lead them to the playoffs and make a run. 'You want to make every play possible, but you want to make the right play,' he said. 'That's how I'm going to challenge myself this training camp.'

Which team has the best chance to go from worst to first in NFL in 2025?

A team going from worst to first in the division is nearly an annual occurrence in the NFL. With last-place teams getting advantages like favorable schedules and higher draft picks, there have been 25 teams since the 2002 realignment that followed up a last-place finish with a division title the following year. While no team pulled off the trick last season, it had happened least once in each of the previous four seasons. Perhaps no team is better positioned to do it this season than the San Francisco 49ers , who followed up a Super Bowl loss in the 2023 season with a 6-10 last-place finish in 2024. The Niners were done in by a string of injuries to key players and now head into the 2025 season with the weakest projected schedule thanks in part to three games against fellow last-place teams Chicago, the New York Giants and Cleveland. Here's a look at the contenders based on their odds to finish first from BetMGM Sportsbook: San Francisco 49ers BetMGM odds to win division: +165. Reason for optimism: The 49ers still have star power with players like Fred Warner , George Kittle , Nick Bosa, Christian McCaffrey and Trent Williams and one of the top offensive coaches in the game in Kyle Shanahan. With the last-place schedule and a rotation that includes eight games against the weaker South divisions, the Niners are favored to win the NFC West. Reason for pessimism: San Francisco let several defensive starters leave in the offseason as part of a movement to get cheaper and younger. But if their rookie class can't step in and contribute immediately, the defense could have some holes even with the return of coordinator Robert Saleh . New England Patriots BetMGM odds to win division: +475. Reason for optimism: QB Drake Maye showed flashes as a rookie and should get a boost in Year 2 with a better coaching staff led by Mike Vrabel and coordinator Josh McDaniels. Reason for pessimism: Maye still has very little support even after the offseason acquisitions of rookie lineman Will Campbell and veteran receiver Stefon Diggs. Chicago Bears BetMGM odds to win division: +550. Reason for optimism: The Bears brought in the most highly sought after coaching candidate when Ben Johnson was hired after a strong run as offensive coordinator in Detroit. They also upgraded the interior of the offensive line by acquiring Joe Thuney, Drew Dalman and Jonah Jackson in the offseason to help second-year QB Caleb Williams. Reason for pessimism: Chicago is in a division with three returning playoff teams and has one of the more difficult schedules in the NFL. If Williams' struggles as a rookie were more about holding onto the ball too long instead of the surrounding environment, the upgrades might not be enough. Tennessee Titans BetMGM odds to win division: +800. Reason for optimism: Last year's struggles delivered Tennessee the No. 1 overall pick. QB Cam Ward brings his playmaking ability to Tennessee and should be helped by an improved offensive line following the additions of Dan Moore and Kevin Zeitler and anticipated improvement from recent first-rounders JC Latham and Kevin Zeitler. Reason for pessimism: Ward doesn't have a strong group of pass catchers even after the signing of veteran Tyler Lockett and Tennessee hasn't done much to upgrade a defense that allowed 27.1 points per game last season. New Orleans Saints BetMGM odds to win division: +1,300. Reason for optimism: The offense could get a boost if first-round tackle Kelvin Banks can step in immediately and receivers Chris Olave and Rasheed Shaheed are healthy. Reason for pessimism: New Orleans has uncertainty at quarterback after Derek Carr's retirement and is counting on either second-round rookie Tyler Shough or 2024 fifth-rounder Spencer Rattler to perform at a high enough level to compete. Las Vegas Raiders BetMGM odds to win division: +1,500. Reason for optimism: Perhaps no team upgraded at quarterback and head coach as much as the Raiders with Pete Carroll replacing Antonio Pierce at coach and Geno Smith coming in at quarterback after a platoon of Gardner Minshew and Aidan O'Connell. The offense under new coordinator Chip Kelly could be intriguing with record-setting second-year tight end Brock Bowers and rookie running back Ashton Jeanty. Reason for pessimism: Las Vegas is in a division that had three playoff teams last season, making it a difficult proposition to climb too high in the standings. There are major questions in the secondary that could prove fatal in a division with Patrick Mahomes, Justin Herbert and Bo Nix. New York Giants BetMGM odds to win division: +2,800. Reason for optimism: The Giants should have one of the top defensive lines with No. 3 overall pick Abdul Carter joining Dexter Lawrence, Brian Burns and Kayvon Thibodeaux. The return of left tackle Andrew Thomas after he missed 11 games last season should help boost the offense under new quarterback Russell Wilson . Reason for pessimism: While Wilson may be an upgrade at quarterback, his play has fallen significantly since leaving Seattle following the 2021 season. New York traded up to draft Jaxson Dart in the first round but he might not be ready to take over as a rookie on a team that still has many holes on offense. Cleveland Browns BetMGM odds to win division: +3,000. Reason for optimism: The Browns feature one of the game's top defensive players in four-time All-Pro Myles Garrett after he got a new contract last season and Kevin Stefanski has won AP Coach of the Year twice in five seasons with Cleveland. Reason for pessimism: Cleveland is still searching for a QB three years after trading for Deshaun Watson. Veteran Joe Flacco , Kenny Pickett and rookies Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders are all in the mix but none provide immediate hope for success. ___ AP NFL:
