Yankees, and their new bullpen acquisitions, implode against Marlins in wild game

One day after the trade deadline, the three newest additions to the New York Yankees' bullpen collapsed in a stunning 13-12 loss to the Miami Marlins.
Jake Bird, David Bednar and Camilo Doval combined to allow nine runs in 2 1/3 innings in what was arguably the Yankees' worst loss of the season.
'Not how you draw it up, but those guys are really good at what they do,' manager Aaron Boone said of his new relievers. 'It's not the first time they've had a rough one, and I fully expect them to bounce back.'
It was the Yankees' first nine-inning loss while scoring 12 or more runs since Aug. 12, 1973, against Oakland, according to Katie Sharp of Baseball Reference.

Bird, acquired from the Colorado Rockies in exchange for second baseman Roc Riggio and pitcher Ben Shields, gave up four runs and three hits in 1/3 of an inning before Bednar, traded from the Pittsburgh Pirates for three prospects, gave up two runs and four hits and was saddled with his first blown save of the season. And Doval, acquired by New York at the buzzer for four prospects, ended his night with three runs and two hits, as well as a blown save.

Boone said he used all three new pitchers so he could rest relievers who had been taxed lately.
'We were going to stay away from (Luke Weaver), (Devin) Williams and (Tim) Hill tonight, with as much as we've used them of late,' he said. 'Set up in a good spot to get through there, and obviously just struggled tonight.'

Meanwhile, other big-name relievers who were traded ahead of Thursday's deadline fared better in their first outings with their new teams.
Jhoan Duran, who was traded from the Minnesota Twins to the Philadelphia Phillies for a package that included two top-100 prospects, earned a four-pitch save in his first appearance at Citizens Bank Park. Flamethrower Mason Miller, whom the San Diego Padres acquired from the Athletics for a package that included top prospect Leo De Vries, touched 103 mph in his first strikeout for the Friars.
Following Friday's loss, the Yankees are 60-50, sitting 3.5 games behind the Toronto Blue Jays for the lead in the American League East, and maintain possession of the first AL wild-card spot.
