TikTok shopper spends $2,300 on jade bracelets that are actually fake -- and that's not the worst part
A woman bought jade bracelets advertised on a TikTok livestream and discovered they were fake.
Mdm Xie Meijun, 48, saw an account selling jade bracelets on TikTok live on May 19. The livestreamer claimed he was selling bracelets made out of Burmese jade for low prices.
"The seller said that he was selling high-quality Burmese jade and even showed a certificate of authenticity," Xie told Shin Min Daily News.
"The goods in the livestream looked high quality, so I believed him and bought seven jade bracelets for $2,300."
She purchased the bracelets for herself, as gifts to friends and relatives, and also to resell them.
Xie said that the seven jade bracelets were sold at prices ranging from $100 to over $600, with the most expensive one being $688.
"After one of the $500 jade bracelets arrived, I immediately sent it for authentication, which cost $70," she explained.
"Unexpectedly, the inspection found that the bracelets were made of fake jade which had been dyed and injected with polymer, and the material was harmful to health when worn."

Xie said she could not wear, give or sell away the bracelets, and that her money has gone down the drain.
She added: "I questioned the merchant, who claimed that there was a problem with the inspection service and questioned whether I truly knew the goods."
After Xie reported the account on TikTok, she found that the merchant had changed his account and started a new livestream to continue selling jade bracelets.
She also sent direct messages warning those who expressed interest in buying the bracelets during the livestream, but they ignored her and continued to place orders.
Xie speculated that these enthusiastic customers were 'shills' who lured others into being deceived by livening up the broadcast to influence others into placing orders.
She also reported the incident to the police.
In response to a media query, the police confirmed that a report was lodged.
"I no longer expect to get a refund, but I hope to warn others," Xie said.
Shin Min Daily News attempted to contact the seller but did not receive a response.

Teen tricked into filming lewd videos by male classmate posing as online 'beauty'
A 16-year-old teenager was coerced into recording lewd videos of himself to impress a supposed "beauty", who turned out to be a female persona created by his male classmate. According to Shin Min Daily News, the classmate and his friend later used the footage to extort S$2,450 from the teen. The two defendants, identified as A and B, are 17 and 18 years old respectively. B, who assisted A in the blackmail, faced two charges of cheating and blackmail on July 30. He pleaded guilty to one, with the other taken into consideration during sentencing. The teen's identity is protected by a gag order. Teen asked to soak genitals in chilli oil and record himself masturbating In February 2023, A posed as a girl named "Bella" and initiated contact with the victim via Instagram. The two began an online relationship and soon became "romantically involved". A then instructed the victim to perform a series of lewd and harmful acts, including soaking his genitals in chilli oil, using a lighter to burn his hair, and masturbating in front of the camera. A recorded the victim performing the acts and later shared the footage with B. A and B conspired to blackmail the victim, threatening to release the videos if he did not comply with their demands and hand over the money. Between July and December, the duo extorted a total of S$2,450 from the victim on five separate occasions. Teen lodged police report Court documents showed that B was arrested on June 10 last year after the victim lodged a police report. It was during the police investigations that the identities of A and B were discovered. The prosecution noted that A's case is still pending. Given that B was under 20 years old at the time of the offences, they argued that rehabilitation should take precedence in the sentencing. They requested that B undergo a probation assessment. The judge granted the application, and the case was adjourned to September 15 for sentencing.

Teacher's appeal against 14-year jail sentence for sexually assaulting 11-year-old girl rejected
A 33-year-old married primary school teacher was sentenced to 14 years in prison for sexually abusing an 11-year-old student over an 11-year period. Two months later, he appealed, claiming that their relationship was built on "true love". The judge rejected this claim, citing the 21-year age gap and ruling that it was exploitation, not love. The now 52-year-old primary school teacher faced eight charges, including sexual assault of a minor and offences under the Children and Young Persons Act. He pleaded not guilty but was convicted after trial and sentenced to 14 years and two months in prison. The victim is now 31 years old. A gag order has been imposed to protect the victim's identity. According to court documents reported by Shin Min Daily News, the victim said she began a relationship with the defendant in September 2006. The following year, their interactions escalated from physical intimacy to digital penetration. The defendant had sex with the victim when she was below 16 years old. The two had been in an inappropriate relationship for several years until June 13, 2017, when the victim's sister discovered three videos on her mobile phone. In the clips, the victim spoke about difficulties in the relationship and her intention to end it, but said she could not confide in anyone for fear the defendant would cause trouble. This led to the case being exposed. The defendant later appealed against his conviction and sentence, claiming he and the victim were in a consensual relationship and that she had taken the lead. However, the High Court judge rejected his account as implausible, calling it an attempt to evade responsibility and discredit the victim. Noting the 21-year age gap between them, the judge concluded the relationship was not one of love but of exploitation. The defendant argued that he had not coerced or pressured the victim, but the judge found that he had abused his position of authority to commit the offence. As the victim's teacher, the defendant should have guided and protected her, the judge said, but instead chose to exploit her for his own ends. The judge also found the sentence appropriate and dismissed the appeal.

Driver, 83, hits motorcyclist and crashes into Clementi coffee shop bollards, missing diners, Singapore News
An 83-year-old woman allegedly lost control of her vehicle, hitting a motorcyclist before crashing into bollards outside a coffee shop in Clementi on Monday (July 28). The incident occurred at about 6.35pm at Block 449, Clementi Avenue 3. A post shared in the Facebook group SG Road Vigilante showed a photo of the damaged car crashed into the bollards, with a crowd gathered around the scene. The accident appeared to have occurred at a zebra crossing leading to the coffee shop located beneath an HDB block. According to Shin Min Daily News, when reporters arrived at the scene that evening, they saw that the front and right sides of the car were badly dented, and the licence plate had fallen off. Members of the public told the Chinese evening daily that serious injuries could have resulted had the bollards not blocked the car's path. An ice cream vendor, who wished to be known only as Pan, 65, told the Chinese daily that he'd rushed to the scene after hearing the crash. "A female motorcyclist was lying on the ground with what appeared to be an injured arm [and was] unable to move. Medical staff later bandaged her," said Pan. Pan added that in addition to the female driver, there was an older man and another woman in the car. He believed that the car had collided with the motorcycle, causing the rider to crash onto the sidewalk. In addition to the motorcycle involved in the accident, a black car parked on the opposite side of the road was also believed to have been hit from behind during the incident, Shin Min reported. Another coffee shop employee told Shin Min that the motorcyclist is a delivery rider and was conscious and able to speak after the accident. It was also reported that two people, believed to be family members of the female driver, rushed to the scene. One of them stated that the driver was their grandmother, according to Shin Min. A coffee shop employee also told the Chinese evening daily that the driver appeared frightened after exiting the vehicle and kept apologising to the rider lying on the ground. Two nurses working at a nearby clinic also came to provide assistance. In response to queries from AsiaOne, the police and Singapore Civil Defence Force confirmed that they received a call for assistance at about 6.35 pm at Block 449, Clementi Avenue 3. A 26-year-old female motorcyclist was conveyed to the National University Hospital in a conscious state, while the 83-year-old female driver is currently assisting with investigations. Police investigations are ongoing. [[nid:436371]]
