Steep car discounts mark H1, two-wheeler sales hold firm in rural India

Steep car discounts mark H1, two-wheeler sales hold firm in rural India

As India's auto industry moves through the first half of the calendar year, a clear divergence has emerged in discounting trends across segments. Passenger vehicle (PV) makers are offering steep discounts to liquidate unsold 2024 inventory, while two-wheeler manufacturers are taking a more measured approach, supported by stable retail demand and tighter inventory control.
Automakers such as Tata Motors, Volkswagen, Skoda, Renault, Jeep, and Nissan are offering discounts ranging from ₹70,000 to ₹2 lakh across various EVs and SUVs. Hyundai has slashed prices by ₹4 lakh on the Ioniq 5, while Mahindra is offering up to ₹4.1 lakh off on the XUV700 and Scorpio N.
'This aggressive discounting is directly tied to high inventory levels,' said C S Vigneshwar, President, Federation of Automobile Dealers Association (Fada). 'Current inventory is around 50–55 days, which is elevated. Dealers face a 2 per cent holding cost if vehicles remain unsold for two months, which pushes them to offer deep discounts.'

Two-wheeler makers stay cautious amid healthy rural sentiment
In contrast, two-wheeler companies have avoided broad-based discounting. Bajaj Auto is offering celebration-linked incentives of up to ₹9,111 on its Pulsar range and ₹5,000 off on the Freedom 125. Yamaha is offering ₹10,000 in benefits along with a 10-year warranty on the RayZR 125 Fi Hybrid. Kawasaki is clearing pre-facelift Ninja 300 units with discounts up to ₹84,000.
'Inventory levels in the two-wheeler segment are around one month, which is manageable. There is no pressure to push large-scale discounts,' said Vigneshwar. 'Retail demand remains stable, especially in rural markets.'

Passenger vehicle sales up 2.5%, but momentum remains uneven
Retail sales in the PV segment between January and May 2025 stood at 17,72,074 units, a 2.54 per cent year-on-year increase. Wholesale dispatches during the same period reached 18,51,936 units, up 2.03 per cent from the previous year.
However, despite growth, demand has been patchy. Retail sales dipped in February and May, suggesting consumer hesitation, possibly driven by high interest rates or deferred purchases. Discounts have intensified in recent months to sustain market momentum.

Two-wheeler retail steady, wholesale lags
Two-wheeler retail sales from January to May 2025 totalled 77,26,785 units, reflecting marginal year-on-year growth of 0.14 per cent. Wholesale dispatches, however, declined by 2.45 per cent to 76,82,473 units, indicating that original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) are exercising caution with inventory.
Sales in April and May were steady at the retail level, especially in rural regions, even as wholesale figures remained under pressure

Rural markets drive two-wheeler demand
According to Fada, rural demand continues to outperform urban markets in the two-wheeler segment.
'Retail demand in the hinterlands has helped stabilise volumes even without heavy discounting,' Vigneshwar added.

Mahindra XEV 7e spotted testing ahead of launch. Here's what we know so far

The XEV 7e maintains the XUV700's familiar shape, while introducing a few design cues from Mahindra's Electric Vision lineup Notify me Mahindra is slowly expanding its EV offering, and its upcoming addition, the XEV 7e, the all-electric XUV700, was spotted out on a road test. This all-electric SUV should be priced as the XEV 7e, and it seems the electric SUV is on a good path forward, as new spy images reveal aspects of its design cues, interior details, and technical set-up. Placed between the BE6 and XEV 9e in the Mahindra EV hierarchy, the XEV 7e may arrive by late 2025. Mahindra XEV 7e: Expected design Though the test mule, heavily camouflaged, the XEV 7e maintains the XUV700's familiar shape, while introducing a few design cues from Mahindra's Electric Vision lineup, imbuing it with a clear EV identity. The most significant exterior changes are a closed-off front grille for reduced aerodynamic drag, inverted L-shaped LED DRLs, and aero-optimised dual-tone alloy wheels. Flush-fitting door handles, like those found on the XEV 9e and BE 6, add to the aerodynamic appearance, while a panoramic sunroof contributes to the upmarket feel. Though its profile is reminiscent of the ICE-powered XUV700, these styling cues clearly signal the XEV 7e's position within Mahindra's new-generation electric vehicle lineup. Also Read : Mahindra Bolero Neo revealed with LED headlamps and boxy design during testing Mahindra XEV 7e: Expected features The interior of the Mahindra XEV 7e is expected to take strong cues from the XEV 9e, reflecting a modern and tech-forward design language. It will likely have Mahindra's latest two-spoke steering wheel with an LED-lit emblem, along with a three-piece dashboard design that seamlessly integrates the infotainment and driver's display. The interior also will no doubt have multi-zone climate control, ventilated front seats with memory setting, and an impressive 16-speaker Harman Kardon system with Dolby Atmos for an immersive sound experience. Some of the other highlights could be ambient lighting and remote parking assistance, which could be brought over from the XEV 9e. To add to the premium experience, Mahindra is also likely to launch fresh interior color schemes and improved materials that resonate with the SUV's electric persona. Mahindra XEV 7e: Expected specifications The Mahindra XEV 7e is going to be constructed on the company's modular INGLO skateboard platform, which has been specially designed for electric cars. It will most probably take its powertrain options from current offerings such as the BE 6 and XEV 9e and offer battery pack options of 59 kWh and 79 kWh that will have a driving range of up to 600 km on a full charge. Also Read : Mahindra XEV 9e and BE 6 Pack 2 with 79 kWh battery pack launched Further, Mahindra has been said to be developing new battery pack configurations, potentially in the range of 60–65 kWh for lower models and more than 80 kWh for upper trims. The XEV 7e is also said to be compatible with ultra-fast charging to lower downtime and enhance long-distance practicality. The XEV 7e is also said to be made available in RWD as well as AWD configurations. While the entry-level variants might use a single motor on the rear axle, upper trims might receive a two-motor AWD system producing approximately 325 bhp. Mahindra XEV 7e: Launch Timeline Though Mahindra has not announced a launch schedule yet, the XEV 7e may emerge officially in late 2025. With a grand EV festival being hosted on August 15, 2025, the SUV might be teased along with other electric variants. Upon its launch, it will fill the space between the BE 6 and XEV 9e in Mahindra's expanding portfolio of electric vehicles. Check out Upcoming Cars in India 2025, Best SUVs in India. EV sales surge in June, but 2W segment trails on H1 performance

India's electric vehicle (EV) market continued its upward trajectory in June 2025, with strong year-on-year growth in both the two-wheeler (2W) and passenger vehicle (PV) segments, according to data released by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA). However, despite the recent momentum, total electric two-wheeler sales for the first half of 2025 remain lower than the previous year due to a weak start. In contrast, the electric PV segment grew 43.5 per cent during the same period. In June, electric passenger vehicle (PV) sales rose 79 per cent year-on-year, reaching 13,178 units, up from 7,323 units in June 2024. Tata Motors led the segment with 4,708 units, followed by MG Motor India, which sold 3,972 units, and Mahindra & Mahindra, which sold 3,029 units. Tata Motors' EV sales in June were up 8.2 per cent compared to May, showing signs of recovery, while on a year-on-year basis, sales growth was flat at 2.4 per cent. Newer entrants like Hyundai also recorded notable growth, with sales rising 712 per cent YoY to 512 units, as it started selling the electric Creta. However, on a month-on-month basis, Hyundai's EV sales fell by 15.5 per cent. In the electric two-wheeler (2W) segment, sales reached 1,05,355 units, a 31.6 per cent increase YoY, driven by strong performances from legacy and new-age OEMs. TVS Motor Company topped the chart with 25,300 units, closely followed by Bajaj Auto, which sold 23,032 units, and Ola Electric, which sold 20,190 units. Notably, Ather Energy sold 14,526 units and Hero MotoCorp sold 7,668 units, both more than doubling their sales compared to last year, reflecting growing consumer acceptance of e-mobility solutions. Ola's sales were down 45.2 per cent year-on-year, and its market share fell from 46 per cent in June 2024 to around 20 per cent in June 2025. ALSO READ: Auto component industry seeks national strategy on critical materials Despite the strong June performance, electric 2W sales for the first half of 2025 (January–June) were down 31.5 per cent YoY, totaling 2,65,611 units compared to 3,87,782 in H1 2024. The decline is attributed to policy-related uncertainty earlier in the year and the high base effect from last year's peak, driven by subsidy wind-downs. In contrast, the electric PV segment grew 43.5 per cent during the same period, with 70,306 units sold compared to 48,998 in H1 2024. C. S. Vigneshwar, President of FADA, stated, 'Electric mobility is gathering unprecedented momentum across all segments, underpinned by the PM eDrive Scheme's mandate to make electric vehicles more accessible and affordable.' In June 2025, electric two-wheelers accounted for 7.3 per cent of total sales, up from 5.8 per cent a year earlier, reflecting rising consumer confidence. Electric passenger vehicle (PV) penetration reached 4.4 per cent, while electric commercial vehicles (CVs) doubled their share to 1.56 per cent. The expansion of charging infrastructure and support for domestic innovation are fueling record EV sales and accelerating India's transition to electric mobility.
