Lad writes to Siddaramaiah, DKS; seeks fund for OBC industrialists
Bengaluru: Labour Minister Santosh Lad has written to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and his deputy D K Shivakumar seeking a 'fund-of-funds' to bolster young industrialists from OBC a letter dated July 26, Lad said, "As per the (Social and Educational) survey of 2015, 70% of the state's population comprises OBCs. Since there is no separate fund to bolster young industrialists from these communities, they are staying away from the industry sector. Thus, it is mandatory to institute a separate fund at the government level.".Lad's letter comes at a time when Congress is restructuring its political narrative. Top Congress leader Rahul Gandhi recently conceded that the Congress had "fallen short" of understanding OBC issues in the last 10-15 years. During the recently passed 'Bengaluru Declaration,' the Congress favoured hiking the 50% reservation shortage result of Karnataka's mismanagement: Labour minister suggested that both the government and the private sectors (principal investors, angel investors, venture capital and so on) could financially support the fund. He concluded by stating that this method would help OBC entrepreneurs contribute to the state's economy and aid in the growth of both government and private capital. Lad has also sent copies of the letter to Large and Medium Industries Minister M B Patil and Kannada and Culture Minister Shivaraj Tangadagi.

CAP closes application window, merit list to be published on Aug 7
Kolkata: The merit list for Centralised Admission Portal, which closed receiving applications for college entrance on Thursday midnight, will be published on Aug 7. "Today was the last day of receiving applications of first phase of admission through the centralized admission portal. A total 20,69,760 applications received while 3,59,114 students have registered themselves till 6 pm. Of them, 4,311 are from other states. Students have been requested to submit category details through this portal .The merit list will be published on Aug 7," state higher education minister Bratya Basu posted on X on Wednesday. A sharp decline in the number of higher secondary examinees as well as successful candidates, coupled with the uncertainty over undergraduate admissions due to the legal tangle over the OBC issue, appears to have resulted in a 30% decline in applicants for college admission. The CAP also recorded a 40% dip in applications. The state higher education department this year kept delaying the closing of applications amid lack of clarity on OBC seat reservations. The Supreme Court's Monday order on OBC reservations removed the roadblocks to publishing CAP merit lists. According to the updated 2025 OBC list, 76 communities have been additionally classified under OBC A and B categories. Previously, the 2010 OBC list included 64 communities. This update increases OBC reservations from 7% before 2010 to 17% in 2025. "Students are allowed to make changes to their applications and submit their caste details now. Merit lists will be prepared after everything is closed," said an official. The West Bengal School Service Commission, too, will open its portal to allow candidates, for fresh state-level selection, update their OBC status from Aug 5 to Aug 11. The higher education department on Tuesday evening issued a set of guidelines to college principals, emphasising the verification of key details. Principals were asked to ensure the system-calculated merit index adhered strictly to the subject-wise and category-wise merit index formula fixed by the higher education department. Institute heads will have to check whether tie-break rules were implemented, as specified by the state. An education official said "We have to complete all major steps within a very short time, so principals will have to be extra careful," he added.
