But, with ambitions of becoming a manager of his own some day, it now seems like the time is right for the former Man Utd midfielder to start thinking about his pathway into management, according to the BBC.
It is also reported that Fletcher had reservations about taking up the position in the past, with his twin sons Jack and Tyler playing at that age group.
But they've now moved up to 21s, paving the way for Fletcher to begin his first steps in management.
The role is currently vacant after Adam Lawrence left at the end last season to "seek a new challenge" following four years at the club.
And Fletcher, who holds a UEFA A licence, is rated by sporting director Jason Wilcox and departing academy director Nick Cox who's becoming technical director at Everton.
Fletcher made his playing debut in the Champions League in 2003 under Sir Alex Ferguson against Basel.
The midfielder would go on to amass more than 300 games for the club, scoring 24 goals.
He also played almost 100 games for West Brom and 42 for Stoke City towards the end of his career after recovering from ulcerative colitis.
He was diagnosed with the debilitating bowel condition in 2011 and was forced to take time away from the game.
He won five Premier League titles in a glittering career as well as the Champions League, FA Cup and League Cup.

The ex-midfielder returned to the Man Utd in 2020 to coach their under 16s and was promoted to first-team coach the following season.
He then became a technical director in March 2021 for three years helping to bridge the gap between the academy and first team before being replaced by Jason Wilcox.
He then returned to a coaching capacity under Eric ten Hag and Amorim before reportedly holding talks about current vacancy at the U18s managerial position.

EXCLUSIVE Paul Ince is arrested and charged with drink driving after former Man United and England star crashed into a central reservation
Paul Ince has been charged with drink driving. The 57-year-old former England captain was arrested after a black Range Rover smashed into a central reservation in Cheshire on Saturday. He was subsequently charged with drink driving, bailed and will appear before Chester Magistrates on Friday. A spokesperson for Cheshire Police said: 'At around 5pm on Saturday 28 June, police were called following reports of a collision on Chester High Road, Neston. 'The incident involved a black Range Rover which had collided with the central reservation barrier. 'Officers attended the scene and arrested a 57-year-old man. 'Paul Ince, of Neston, has since been charged with drink driving. Ince has been bailed to appear at Chester Magistrates' Court on Friday 18 July.' The incident took place close to Heswall Golf Club, from where Ince has previously posted content on Instagram. Ince, a former Manchester United, Liverpool and West Ham star, was the first black man to captain England. He won 53 caps for his country and is perhaps best remembered for his starring role in a dogged goalless draw with Italy which sent Glenn Hoddle's side to the 1998 World Cup. Ince came through the ranks at the Hammers before a then big-money move to United in 1989. After spending six, trophy-laden years at Old Trafford, he was transferred to Inter Milan before returning to England to play for United's rivals, Liverpool. Further stints at Middlesbrough and Wolves followed before Ince brought the curtain down on a playing career which saw him win two Premier Leagues, two FA Cups and a League Cup, among other silverware. After successful spells in charge of Macclesfield and MK Dons, he went on to manager clubs including Blackburn Rovers, Notts County and Blackpool. His last role was as manager of Reading, a post he left in 2023.

Conor Coady says Rangers move would be ‘unbelievable' as Ibrox icon hails defender as ‘perfect fit'
He is already being tipped as a future Gers captain 'PRICELESS' Conor Coady says Rangers move would be 'unbelievable' as Ibrox icon hails defender as 'perfect fit' Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) CONOR COADY reckons it would be 'unbelievable' to sign for Rangers - and Ibrox icon Jermain Defoe is trying to help make it happen. The Leicester City defender has been linked with a summer switch to Glasgow as Russell Martin looks to beef up his backline as part of squad overhaul. And the former Spurs striker – who was part of Steven Gerrard's title-winning side in 2021 – revealed Coady is keen to move north if a deal can be struck. Defoe told the Daily Record: 'I spoke to Conor and we had a good conversation about Rangers. 'He knows how big the club is and I think he's the perfect fit for Rangers. 'I've obviously spoken to him and I just hope the deal gets done now. 'I told him how big Rangers are. I said: 'Trust me, Rangers are bigger than most Premier League clubs'. 'I told Conor that I wish I'd gone there five years before I did. 'Conor is keen on the move, 100 percent. 'Obviously, they have to sort out a few things with Leicester and I'm not sure what is going on with that. 'But honestly, his eyes lit up. Frank Lampard corrects 'all over the place' Conor Coady live on TV during Euro 2024 coverage 'He said to me: 'J, if I get the chance to play for a club like that, it would be unbelievable'. 'And the great thing is, he's still only 32. It's not like he's 35. 'He can go there, sign a four-year contract and really make a difference to Rangers. 'He can lead them and drive that changing room. 'I don't want any other club to get him. Rangers can't miss out on signings like this. 'If we're looking to go in the right direction as a football club, take this opportunity. 'Because it's a guy who I know would love to be at Rangers. 'When you get players into the building who appreciate being there - even though he's been at top clubs and with England - it's priceless.' Defoe says he can see Coady as a future Rangers leader – and even told current skipper James Tavernier as much. 4 He added: 'Conor is a natural captain. 'But I even messaged Tav on Saturday night and told him - make sure the club gets this deal for Conor done. 'Because these are the types of people we need inside the club, especially in that position. 'And hopefully they can add a few more, like a midfielder and centre-forward, so they have that spine of the team. 'Conor can lead from the back and he'll be a massive signing for Rangers. 'He's a natural leader and you don't get many of them. Some players develop that over their career. 'But with someone like Conor, I think he's been like that from a young kid, it's natural. 'He was speaking to me about standards and driving the right things in the changing room. 'That's what Rangers is all about, standards. 'It's about how you live, what you do on and off the pitch, because you're representing a huge football club and you have to give the fans what they deserve.' Jermain Defoe reveals Conor Coady Rangers transfer stance
The former Ibrox striker, who worked alongside Coady during TV coverage of England's under-21 Euro Championship final win, is hopeful of a long-term deal for the Leicester City centre-back. Defoe told the Daily Record: "I spoke to Conor and we had a good conversation about Rangers. "He knows how big the club is and I think he's the perfect fit for Rangers. "I've obviously spoken to him and I just hope the deal gets done now. "I told him how big Rangers are. "I said: 'Trust me, Rangers are bigger than most Premier League clubs.'" Coady, under contract at Leicester's King Power Stadium until 2026, would require a transfer fee. Rangers previously tried to sign him in 2024 but failed to reach an agreement. Defoe, who moved to Rangers in 2020, continued: "I told Conor that I wish I'd gone there five years before I did. "Conor is keen on the move, 100 percent. "Obviously, they have to sort out a few things with Leicester and I'm not sure what is going on with that. "But honestly, his eyes lit up. "He said to me: 'J, if I get the chance to play for a club like that, it would be unbelievable.'" Defoe added: "I don't want any other club to get him. "Rangers can't miss out on signings like this. "If we're looking to go in the right direction as a football club, take this opportunity."
