AI To Unlock Over USD113 Billion In Productivity Gains For Malaysia
KUALA LUMPUR, July 27 (Bernama) -- Widespread adoption of AI by businesses and workers in Malaysia is set to accelerate the nation's economic growth across various sectors, said Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo.
In a statement today, Gobind said that Generative AI alone is projected to unlock up to USD113.4 billion in productive capacity for the country.
Speaking at the High-Level Meeting on Global AI Governance during the World Artificial Intelligence Conference 2025 in Shanghai, China, yesterday, he underscored the shared responsibility of countries worldwide to ensure that AI continues to be a force for good.
'In this artificial intelligence (AI)-shaped era, collaboration is essential. Only through shared commitment, innovation and vigilance can we ensure that the digital world remains a force for good.
'The overarching goal is to bridge the digital divide among nations and enhance digital collaboration to ensure the development and governance of emerging technologies benefit humanity,' he said.
Gobind said Malaysia welcomes the outcome document of the Global AI Governance Action Plan, and highlighted domestic efforts, including the establishment of the National AI Office (NAIO) last December to coordinate and drive the country's AI agenda.
As the 2025 ASEAN Chair, Gobind said that the country is spearheading the ASEAN AI Safety Network and leading the conversation on AI safety.
The Network, according to Gobind, will act as ASEAN's regional platform for AI safety, facilitating best practice exchanges, research collaboration, standards development and responsible AI adoption.
'By driving innovation, enhancing decision-making and optimising the use of precious resources, AI is not just changing industries - it is accelerating global development.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said the project, to be implemented through the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID), was approved under the Fifth Rolling Plan (RP5) of the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP) for 2025. 'The main scope of the project involves the construction of riverbank stabilisation structures to overcome the problem of collapsing riverbanks in the affected areas,' he said in his written answer to Serian MP Dato Sri Richard Riot Jaem in Parliament today. The parliamentary reply was shared to The Borneo Post by Riot's office. Fadillah said survey and detailed design works will be carried out this year, while physical construction is expected to begin in mid-2027. Ringgit strengthens on weak US jobs report

Malaysia proposes Asean monitoring team for Thai-Cambodian border
SEREMBAN: Malaysia plans to help establish an Asean Monitoring Team along the disputed Cambodian-Thai border to achieve a permanent ceasefire, says Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan. The Foreign Minister stated that a general border committee comprising officials from both sides began talks on Monday (Aug 4) in Kuala Lumpur to de-escalate border tensions. "The technical committee will draft the Terms of Reference (TOR) so our plan for a permanent ceasefire along their border can be realised. The highlight will be on Aug 7 when ministers from both countries visit Kuala Lumpur, and we hope the TOR will be finalised by then," he said. Mohamad added that the TOR is essential to create a monitoring team to maintain peace in the area. "We want the situation along the border to return to normal so the people of both countries can live in peace," he said, noting that this would also lead to reopening the border. On July 28, Thailand and Cambodia agreed to an unconditional and immediate ceasefire following a special meeting in Putrajaya chaired by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. At the meeting, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thailand's Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai agreed to convene a General Border Committee Meeting as part of the ceasefire agreement following deadly clashes between both sides. Mohamad expressed confidence that an agreement could be reached as both sides have agreed to drafts proposed by Malaysia. "There haven't been many objections from both sides. Both sides have, however, made some additions to add value for themselves," he said, expressing confidence that a permanent ceasefire solution could be achieved. Mohamad added that the Malaysian Armed Forces chief has held talks with counterparts from both countries to achieve this. "This will further pave the way for the Asean Monitoring Team, which will include military advisors from Asean member countries to act as observers and ensure the permanent ceasefire plan remains in place," he added.
