London is officially one of the world's best cities for music lovers

Time Out17-06-2025
A night out in London might cost a bomb, but that doesn't mean it's not worth it. Our city is packed full of grassroots music venues, has created some of the world's biggest musical artists, and given birth to hugely influential genres like grime and dubstep.
Not convinced yet? A new study has just revealed that the English capital is the best city on the world for music fans. Researchers at SeatPick analysed cities around the world for their number of concerts, music venues, festivals, home-grown artists and music-related businesses to give each city an overall music score out of 10.
Taking the top spot for 2025 was London, scoring 9.67 out of 10 thanks to its 199 venues, 1,734 concerts, 44 festivals and, most impressively, 3,042 homegrown artists.
This isn't to say that London's music scene hasn't had its fair share of challenges. Recently, the Mayor of London launched a ' nightlife taskforce ' to boost late-night activity in the capital amid soaring operating costs and alarming closures of nightlife venues. Let's hope this taskforce can help keep London in the top spot.
It's not just SeatPick that thinks London is a superior music city. The Big Smoke also took the top spot in a recent ranking of Europe's music capitals, which also incorporated the number of nightclubs.
Coming in second on the list was the home of techno and Berghain, Berlin, scoring 9.55. The German city was followed by Chicago, Vienna, and Nashville respectively. Read more about the global ranking here.

The tiny UK village that attracts A-list celebrities like bees to honey

The historical market town of Chipping Norton in the Cotswolds boasts only around 6,500 residents - and more of them than one might expect are A-list celebrities. Often fondly called 'Chippy' by locals, the charming, honey-colored stone village sits in an Area of Outstanding Beauty - surrounded by rolling hills and picturesque countryside, which offer a quintessential English landscape. So it's no wonder that Ellen DeGeneres and her wife Portia Del Rossi chose the town after fleeing the US late last year, a decision that they made in the wake of Donald Trump's re-election as President. The couple were in glamorous company as residents of Chipping Norton. Such is the influx of the celebrity elite that they have a collective moniker – 'The Chipping Norton Set'. 'Yes. We got here the day before the election and woke up to lots of texts from our friends with crying emojis, and I was like, 'He got in.' And we're like, 'We're staying here,'' Ellen said last weekend at an event at Everyman theatre in nearby Cheltenham. The couple have subsequently sold the property, citing the lack of horse stables, but Ellen has professed her love for the area, prompting speculation that they'll stay in the Cotswolds. 'We're just not used to seeing this kind of beauty. The villages and the towns and the architecture – everything you see is charming, and it's just a simpler way of life. It's clean. Everything here is just better – the way animals are treated, people are polite. I just love it here.' Celebrities that have called the area home include Jeremy Clarkson — whose famous farm Diddly Squat is nearby — David Cameron, Jamie Oliver, Kate Moss, David and Victoria Beckham and Ellie Goulding, Princess Beatrice, Zara Tindall and Simon Cowell. Calvin Harris and his wife Vick Hope have recently won local approval by knocking down an 'ugly' local property to make way for their Cotswolds dream mansion. In fact, they hired one the Royal Family 's favourite architects to build the gaff. Local farm shop Daylesford Organic has become an iconic haunt of these A-listers and royalty, with Eddie Redmayne seen pursuing the aisles and Princess Eugenie also spotted having a browse. The town boasts a variety of independent shops, including antique stores and a regular market, alongside a diverse selection of pubs and restaurants. For anyone looking to upgrade to full members club luxury, Soho Farmhouse is just down the road, which is frequented by stars from Rita Ora to Meghan Markle (who reportedly held her hen do there) and Taylor Swift, who hired a £3.3m cottage near Chipping Norton during her Eras tour in 2024. Every year former Blur bassist and local cheesemaker Alex James throws the Big Feastival in nearby Kingham, which "brings together music from the UK's biggest artists, Michelin-starred chefs, award-winning street food and an exciting array of family activities". This August, revellers will be able to see Nelly Furtado, The Rizzle Kicks and the Wombats hit the stage. The addition of these famous-folk has had a mixed reaction locally, though. Unhappy homeowners have rejected plans for 350 new homes near to Clarkson's Diddly Squat Farm. Others believe the influx of tourists is good for the area, but is pushing prices up.

Ellen DeGeneres admits 'we just can't keep up' amid struggle with new life in UK

Former talk-show host Ellen DeGeneres has opened up about the continuous challenges of adapting to rural life in England with wife Portia de Rossi since relocating from the US Ellen DeGeneres has opened up about life in the English countryside following her move to the UK with wife Portia de Rossi in November 2024. In a recent interview in Cheltenham with journalist Richard Bacon, the former talk show host discussed adjusting to rural life, the couple's unexpected struggles with livestock, and the ongoing challenges facing LGBTQ+ rights in the United States. ‌ DeGeneres, 67, described how she and de Rossi initially embraced their new surroundings, attempting to maintain the land around their home by riding lawn mowers daily to manage the pastures for their horses. However, the effort soon became overwhelming for them both. ‌ 'We just can't keep up with this,' DeGeneres recalled telling de Rossi, who then suggested they bring in sheep to help with the overgrowth. According to DeGeneres, the idea quickly spiralled into a series of huge complications. ‌ "[Portia] said, 'Let's just get four sheep to put in the pastures with the horses,' and we did. And the next morning they were just out and they were gone. They just climbed right out and then I had to buy electric fencing." The fencing did not solve the issue for the couple as the former talk-show host explained: 'They were in there for a week. Then one got out and then they all got out. And then I was like I have to build an actual fence. So we built a fence and it was so ugly, it ruined everything. So I had to pay to take the fence down.' ‌ She continued, 'I spent so much money on those sheep. I can't even tell you how much those sheep cost. It was Portia's idea.' DeGeneres also noted the added burden of the constant cleanup as she said: 'They used the restroom everywhere, and the dog would get to it.' ‌ Despite the mishaps, the couple have still been exploring various parts of the UK since moving across the pond last November. DeGeneres humorously remarked on British place names, admitting she had trouble pronouncing them. 'This is Cheltenham right? I don't go, 'Chelten-ham.' Y'all are in such a hurry with your names. It should [be] 'By-sister,' but it's 'Bicester,' right?' She joked that town names must have been created with little time to spare: 'We don't have time for that.' ‌ During the interview, DeGeneres also addressed more serious concerns, particularly regarding LGBTQ+ rights in the U.S. 'The Baptist church in America is trying to reverse gay marriage. They're trying to at the very least stop it from happening in the future and possibly reverse it.' She revealed that she and de Rossi are already preparing for the potential impact of U.S. policies. 'Portia and I are already looking into it and if they do that, we're going to get married here in Cheltenham. Have cheese on us,' she said.

Ibiza Rocks events resume just days after second Scot plunges from balcony

Evan Thomson from Aberdeen, and Gary Kelly from Dundee, both died this month after falling from their hotel balconies in Ibiza. Ibiza Rocks have resumed their events just days after a second Scot plunged to his death from a balcony at the hotel. ‌ Evan Thomson, from Aberdeen, fell to his death from his balcony on Monday July 7. The 26-year-old tragically fell from the sixth floor while on holiday celebrating his birthday. ‌ Just two weeks later, on Monday, Gary Kelly, 19, from Dundee died after he fell from the third-floor of the hotel just after midnight. ‌ Following their tragic deaths, Ibiza Rocks announced they would be suspending all events. We told on Thursday, however, the hotel were still selling party tickets despite saying they were pausing future events. ‌ And bosses have now confirmed investigations have concluded - with their schedule set to resume tomorrow. A statement from Ibiza Rocks read: "Over the past week, we've focused on supporting those sadly affected by recent incidents and paused our events programme out of respect for that process. "During this time, we've taken the opportunity to review the strong safety measures already in place across the hotel and look at where we can go further. As we always have, we continue to work with independent inspectors, external experts and listen to feedback from our team, guests and the wider community to keep improving and strengthening our approach. ‌ "We're also being clearer about our expectations around respectful behaviour and personal responsibility. A safe and positive environment is something we all contribute to, so we're encouraging all guests to look out for their friends, trust their instincts and speak to a member of the team if they need help. " This week, the hotel has remained open, but with a pause on events during initial investigations, which have now concluded. We will begin to resume our scheduled events programme from tomorrow, Saturday July 26. "We're grateful to our guests for their patience and understanding and to our team for their continued care and hard work during this difficult time. ‌ "All ticket holders to events that were suspended have been contacted with information about their ticket(s)." Dizzee Rascal was scheduled to play at the hotel on Wednesday as part of the venue's '20th birthday celebrations' but that was postponed. However, Rudimental are still set to perform on July 30 for the anniversary, with tickets still available to purchase online. ‌ Following Evan's death his loved ones raised questions about the hotel safety, slamming how the party destination handled the situation. Friend Blair Robertson slammed the hotel, saying they tried hard to 'get things back to normal' following the death. ‌ He added: 'Security took us away to front desk. Paramedics didn't arrive for about 30 minutes. Forensic officers didn't speak English. We were just standing there, not knowing what was going on. Reception gave us false hope. "We heard the jet washes cleaning the ground where Evan died. That was the worst thing for us." Meanwhile Evan's sister Teila said there needed to be 'higher safety precautions', adding: "Once it did happen, the hotel's response was just completely heartbreaking; almost as if it never happened. I pray no other family has to go through this." ‌ On Wednesday, Ibiza Rocks issued a safety notice on their social media following the deaths, saying their thoughts 'remained with the families' of Evan and Gary. They wrote: "The tragic incidents of the past few weeks have deeply affected many. We continue to work closely with the authorities and our thoughts and support remain with everyone impacted. ‌ "Much of the hard work that goes into safety and security in hotels and venues across the world happens behind the scenes. With thousands of guests passing through our doors every summer, it takes a collective effort from our team, security and local partners to maximise safety for all. "In times like these, care matters - but so does action. We have zero tolerance for any behaviour that puts our guests or our team at risk and we are building on the strong work we already do to go even further. "Out of respect and privacy for the people involved, we don't usually comment on individual reports posted online, but that certainly doesn't mean we're not always listening. We're committed to working with anyone who raises solid concerns so that we can establish the facts and take the appropriate steps." ‌ Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! The hotel also noted it is working to improve balcony safety. They continued: "Balcony safety is something we take very seriously, and our hotel meets all the applicable building regulations. "Alongside that, we're introducing further safety measures and working to raise more guest awareness to help encourage responsible use and keep everyone safe."
