ED conducts searches on suspended HMDA official Shiva Balakrishna properties; Rs 250 crore assets flagged by ACB
HYDERABAD: The Enforcement Directorate (ED), Hyderabad Unit, on Wednesday launched searches at multiple locations linked to suspended HMDA official Shiva Balakrishna. The searches come in the backdrop of an ongoing investigation into alleged disproportionate assets unearthed earlier by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB).
Shiva Balakrishna, a former Planning Officer with Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL) and in-charge Secretary of Telangana Real Estate Regulatory Authority (RERA), was arrested by the ACB on January 25 in a case relating to assets disproportionate to known sources of income. He was 54 years old at the time of his arrest. The ACB also arrested his brother,
Naveen Kumar
, in connection with the same case.
ED issued an ECIR based under PMLA.
ED seized documents during the searches on the residences of Shiva Balakrishna and his brother Naveen Kumar at Rajendranagar and Chaitanyanagar. ED will be looking into the quid pro quo deals of Shiva Balakrishna with the top realtors in Hyderabad for granting permission for apartments, villa projects, and layouts. Investigations may lead to the questioning of the top realtors in the city, sources said.

The total market value of these assets was estimated at ₹250 crore. During the ACB raid earlier this year, investigators seized key documents from Balakrishna's lavish duplex villa located in Aditya Fort View, Puppalaguda, on the outskirts of Hyderabad.
Lack of ACB Documents Slows ED Probe
Officials from the ED expressed concern over limited cooperation from the ACB in securing essential documents for their probe. Sources within the agency said that despite multiple requests, several relevant documents have not been shared, slowing down the investigation into possible money laundering angles connected to the disproportionate assets.
The ED's fresh round of searches is expected to focus on tracing financial transactions, benami holdings, and potential violations under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

Now Idaho school districts blindsided as US withholds over $33 million in federal aid
Now Idaho school districts blindsided as US withholds over $33 million in federal aid Idaho school districts have been unexpectedly hit by a freeze on more than $33 million in federal funding, leaving local education authorities scrambling to adjust budgets and staffing plans just weeks before the new academic year begins. The payments, which had been previously approved by the US federal government, were due for release on July 1 but were suddenly withheld, causing significant disruption. This latest freeze adds to a pattern of uncertainty in US education funding, compounding challenges for districts already managing tight budgets. The financial shortfall is forcing districts to reconsider support services, staff roles, and crucial educational programmes that affect vulnerable student populations. Federal funding freeze triggers major budget shortfalls On July 1, school districts across Idaho anticipated receiving federally allocated funds to finalise their financial and staffing decisions for the upcoming school year. However, the US government's unexpected withholding of these funds took many by surprise. As reported by KMVT, Twin Falls School District spokesperson Eva Craner likened the situation to receiving only part of a paycheck with a day's notice: 'It's kind of like getting a day notice a day before your payday that you're only going to receive a portion of your paycheck. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is it legal? How to get Internet without paying a subscription? Techno Mag Learn More Undo ' Twin Falls alone faces a $1.5 million shortfall, which could lead to cuts in educational programmes. Craner explained that the district will not provide migrant support or English language support to the extent originally planned. Although staff members involved in these programmes will not be laid off, they will be reassigned to other roles within the district, potentially affecting their pay. Similarly, Blaine County School District is confronting a $170,000 gap. Christy Castro, the district's special programmes director, indicated that new teacher mentor stipends and professional development for maths could be cut to address the deficit. 'Lacking that training could potentially impact the improvement of our maths scores and delivery of instruction,' Castro told KMVT. Implications for Idaho's education landscape The withheld funds, estimated at $33.3 million by the Idaho Department of Education, are critical to maintaining programmes that support migrant students, English learners, and professional development initiatives. These funding interruptions complicate already tight local budgets and jeopardise key educational goals. Idaho State Superintendent Debbie Critchfield released a statement, as quoted by KMVT, expressing hope for a quick resolution: 'We're hopeful we will know the timeline for distribution sooner rather than later, as decisions are being made now in local districts for the coming school year. We will continue to communicate with our local schools as we receive additional information from Washington, DC.' The freeze arrives amid broader national concerns over education funding stability. Districts must now revise plans rapidly to cope with sudden financial uncertainty, with potential impacts on staff remuneration and student services. As the new school year approaches, Idaho districts remain in a state of flux, awaiting clarity from the US federal government on when the withheld funds will be released. Syria-DPWorld deal: $800 million Tartus port pact signed; post-Assad regime eyes post-war reconstruction
Syria has signed an $800 million agreement with UAE-based company DP World to develop the port of Tartus, state media reported on Sunday, marking a major step in the country's push to rebuild after 14 years of civil war. The deal comes as the new Islamist authorities, who took power following the ousting of longtime ruler Bashar al-Assad in December, continue efforts to reconnect Syria with international companies and revive its shattered economy. 'In the presence of President Ahmed Al-Sharaa, an agreement was signed between the General Authority for Land and Sea Ports and DP World, valued at $800 million, as a strategic step aimed at enhancing port infrastructure and logistics services in Syria,' state news agency SANA reported. DP World CEO Sultan Bin Sulayem said the country held 'significant assets, including the Port of Tartus, which represents an opportunity to transport and export many Syrian industries.' He also pledged to make Tartus 'one of the best ports in the world'. DP World operates dozens of marine and inland ports and terminals across Asia, Africa and Europe. The war left Syria's infrastructure in ruins. The new leadership is banking on the easing of Western sanctions to attract investment and drive reconstruction. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is it legal? 'We are laying the foundation for a new phase of field and maritime work in Syria, repositioning ourselves on the regional and international economic map,' he said, quoted by AFP. In May, Syria signed a 30-year contract with French shipping giant CMA CGM to run the port of Latakia. That same month, it finalised a $7 billion energy deal with a consortium of Qatari, Turkish and US companies aimed at restoring its crippled power sector.
