Aamir Khan Gave His Tennis Prize Money To Mom For Buying Shoes, Clothes: 'Abba jaan Had Taken A Loan'

News1803-06-2025
Aamir Khan opens up on childhood struggles, revealing how his father's 8-year film delay left their family without income.
Aamir Khan, one of Bollywood's most respected stars today, recently opened up about the tough times his family faced when he was growing up. Speaking on Raj Shamani's podcast, the actor revealed that despite being born into a film family, he didn't have it easy. In fact, he had to become responsible at a young age as his father, film producer Tahir Hussain, went through a major financial crisis.
'There were a lot of financial problems at home. Usually, people think film producers have a lot of money. There's no truth to that. Most producers struggle a lot to make ends meet. There was a film of Abba jaan (father), Locket, which took eight years to make. There were problems with the actors' dates so the film, which was supposed to finish in one or one and a half years, stretched to eight years," said Aamir.
The long delay in completing the film led to years without income for the Khan household. Aamir explained how high-interest loans worsened the situation.
'There was no income at home for eight years. Because Abba jaan had taken a loan, and the interest was top-level at 36%, there was a very long rough patch in the middle," he continued. He shared how his father was trapped in a cycle of debt with lenders pressuring him but no new financiers willing to step in.
At the time, Aamir was playing competitive tennis and did his bit to help the family. 'I used to play competitive tennis then. Since I knew there's stress at home, I'd keep whatever prize money I won with my Ammi (mother) and tell her if she wants to buy any of my stuff, like shoes or clothes, she should buy from that money. When I'm saying all this, I'm realising I became responsible from a very young age," Aamir recalled.
Tahir Hussain, remembered for producing classics like Caravan (1971), Anamika (1973), and Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke (1993), also directed Aamir in the 1990 fantasy drama Tum Mere Ho. He passed away in 2010 after a heart attack.

Will Aamir Khan's Sitaare Zameen Par release on OTT? Here's what we know

Aamir Khan's Sitaare Zameen Par has completed one month of successful run in cinemas and is currently in its 5th week at the box office. While the movie has already emerged a Clean Hit with a smashing box office collections of Rs 160 crore in 31 days, a major section of the audience is eagerly waiting for its OTT release. However, one must know that Sitaare Zameen Par won't stream on any OTT platform. As Aamir Khan has himself confirmed multiple times, his upcoming films will be exclusive to cinemas only. The actor is steadfast in his decision and is in no mood to sell his digital rights to any OTT platform despite receiving hefty offers from the streaming services. Though the RS Prasanna directorial is likely to finish its theatrical run around Rs 165 crore net in a couple of weeks, Sitaare Zameen Par will still not arrive on any online platform for at least 6 months. Will Sitaare Zameen Par release on YouTube? As Pinkvilla earlier reported, Aamir Khan is planning to release Sitaare Zameen Par on YouTube with a Pay-Per-View model and that too, after 6 months of its theatrical release. Though the actor is yet to decide where he will release Sitaare Zameen Par post-theatrical release, he is definitely inclined towards YouTube, which has the widest reach among all the other online platforms. The Dangal actor and producer is known to revolutionize the market as he has gone against the tide with this latest release, which turned out to be a gutsy move. Interestingly, this strategy will not remain only for Sitaare Zameen Par but will apply to all the upcoming Aamir Khan ventures. Co-starring Genelia Deshmukh and a bunch of real-life specially-challenged individuals, the sports-drama is expected to wind its theatrical run between the lifetime earnings of Raid 2 and Housefull 5. For the uninitiated, the Ajay Devgn movie had collected Rs 165 crore net in India, while the comedy sequel starring Akshay Kumar ended its entire run at Rs 167 crore net. Aamir Khan to star in Meghalaya honeymoon murder movie? Actor closing tracking Sonam-Raja case updates, say reports

After the theatrical release of Sitaare Zameen Par, Aamir Khan may be preparing to take a darker turn with his next cinematic project. According to several media reports including Zoom and Times Now , the actor-producer is reportedly tracking the details of the Meghalaya honeymoon murder case — a real-life crime that has captured national attention due to its disturbing developments and tragic end. While Khan has not officially confirmed the project, the Times Now report states that sources close to him indicate that he has been closely monitoring updates related to the case and discussing it within his inner circle. This has led to growing speculation that the incident could form the foundation of his next production — and potentially his next on-screen appearance. After a trek near Nongriat village, they were reported missing. Raja's decomposed body was later found on June 2 in a deep gorge near the Wei Sawdong Falls, around 65 kilometers from Shillong. He had reportedly been hacked to death and dumped. Sonam, who initially appeared to be missing, resurfaced in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh, and was taken into custody. During questioning, she allegedly admitted to plotting the murder with the help of her 20-year-old boyfriend Raj Kushwaha. As per India Today , police investigations revealed that three additional individuals — Vishal Chauhan, Anand Kurmi, and Akash Rajput — were also allegedly involved in executing the murder. All four were arrested by Indore Police. Aamir Khan's Interest Raises Questions Reports from both Times Now and Zoom cite unnamed insiders who suggest that Khan has been extensively following the developments of the murder case — going so far as to track police briefings, court proceedings, and even speak with crime reporters. The possibility of a film emerging from his production house remains in discussion stages, and there is no confirmation yet on whether Khan would act in the film or stay behind the camera. This rumored project stands in contrast to his recent release Sitaare Zameen Par, which explored themes of empathy and inclusion through the story of specially abled children. Directed by RS Prasanna, that film was praised for its heartfelt narrative and ensemble cast including Genelia D'Souza. Strategic Shift in Storytelling If Aamir Khan does move forward with a film on the Meghalaya case, it would mark a significant shift in tone and genre for the actor. His past work has often balanced social themes with mass appeal — from Taare Zameen Par to Dangal. A project based on a high-profile murder mystery would place him in the psychological thriller or crime drama space, possibly opening a new chapter in his already diverse career. Meanwhile, Khan is reportedly also in the early stages of other ambitious projects, including a cinematic adaptation of the Mahabharata, which has been long rumoured.
