Hall of Fame horse trainer D. Wayne Lukas, a winner of 15 Triple Crown races, dies at 89

Hall of Famer D. Wayne Lukas, one of the most accomplished trainers in horse racing history and a face of the sport for decades, has died. He was 89. His family said Sunday that Lukas died Saturday night at his Louisville, Kentucky, home. Lukas had been hospitalized with a severe MRSA blood infection that caused significant damage to his heart and digestive system and worsened preexisting chronic conditions. 'Wayne devoted his life not only to horses but to the industry – developing generations of horsemen and horsewomen and growing the game by inviting unsuspecting fans into the winners' circle,' his family said in a statement. 'Whether he was boasting about a maiden 2-year-old as the next Kentucky Derby winner or offering quiet words of advice before a big race, Wayne brought heart, grace, and grit to every corner of the sport. His final days were spent at home in Kentucky, where he chose peace, family, and faith.' For all the latest headlines, follow our Google News channel online or via the app. Lukas won 15 Triple Crown races, including the Kentucky Derby four times. Only good friend Bob Baffert has more Triple Crown victories, and Lukas owns a record-tying 20 in the Breeders' Cup World Championships. 'The whole secret of this game, I think, is being able to read the horse: Read what he needs, what he doesn't need, what he can't do, what he can do,' Lukas said in May before his 34th and final Preakness Stakes. 'That's the whole key. Everybody's got the blacksmith, everybody's got to the same bed available, the feed man. We all can hire a good jockey. We all can hire a pretty good exercise rider if we've got the means, so what the hell is the difference? The horse is the difference and what we do with him in reading him.' Lukas was affectionately known around the barns and the racetrack as 'Coach' because he coached high school basketball before his professional career with horses began. Even with months to go before his 90th birthday, he would get up on his pony in the early morning hours and go out to the track himself rather than letting his assistants do the day-to-day work. Born Darnell Wayne Lukas on Sept. 2, 1935, in Wisconsin as the second of three children, he rose to prominence in the sport with quarter horses in races that are effectively sprints. He moved into thoroughbreds in the late 1970s and won his first Preakness with Codex in 1980. Lukas has 4,967 documented victories in thoroughbred racing, with his horses earning more than $310 million from more than 30,600 starts. 'Today we lost one of the great champions of Churchill Downs and one of the most significant figures in Thoroughbred racing over the last 50 years,' Churchill Downs Inc. CEO Bill Carstanjen said. 'We will miss his humor, his wisdom, and his unmatched capacity to thrill the fans with the performances of his horses on our sport's biggest days.' Achieving something of a career renaissance over the past decade – one he credits to finding the right owners willing to spend money on horses – Lukas won the Preakness last year with Early Voting. Asked what motivates him to keep doing his job well into his late 80s, he gave a pep talk fit for a locker room before a big game. 'If you have a passion, you eliminate all the excuses,' Lukas said. 'That's how it works. You get up early. You go without a meal. You drive. You go without sleep – as long as you've got the passion. Don't let that sofa pull you down. It's a little easy when that alarm goes off to say, 'Oh my God, I don't know if I really want to do this today.' Erase that. The most important decision you'll ever make in your life is your attitude decision. Make it early and make the right one.'

Duncan Robinson Exercises Option To Terminate Contract With Heat, Though He Could Return To Miami

Duncan Robinson opted for unrestricted free agency on Sunday, exercising his early termination option for what would have been the final year of his contract with the Miami Heat. The decision doesn't mean he cannot return to the Heat. Robinson – the franchise's all-time leader in 3-pointers made – could have let his option pass Sunday and then been guaranteed $9.9 million of what was a nearly $20 million deal for this coming season. He could now negotiate a new deal with the Heat, agree to be part of a sign-and-trade for another player, or simply sign with a new club. Free agency in the NBA officially begins Monday evening. Robinson had until Sunday to decide on his termination option. The 31-year-old Robinson is a success story like few others in the NBA. He started his college career at Division III Williams, then played his way to Michigan, went undrafted, and was given a chance by the Heat. From there, Robinson became a key part of the rotation. He played in 15 games as a rookie and then was essentially a full-time starter in each of the next three seasons – making at least 232 3-pointers in each of those years. His 1,202 3-pointers are the most in team history, and he needed fewer games than any player in NBA history to reach a number of 3-point milestones – including 200, 300, 400, 500, 600, 700, 800, 900, and 1,000 makes from beyond the arc. Robinson has averaged 11.3 points and shot 39.7 percent from 3-point range in his seven NBA seasons.

Lionel Messi and Inter Miami exit Club World Cup after 4-0 loss to PSG in round of 16

The champions of Europe booted Lionel Messi and his Inter Miami teammates out of the Club World Cup on Sunday. Paris Saint-Germain, Messi's former club and the team that won the Champions League final only a few weeks ago, contained one of the game's greatest players at Mercedes-Benz Stadium and routed Inter Miami 4–0 in the round of 16. Defensive struggles again plagued Miami, with all four of PSG's goals coming before halftime. An early injury to defender Noah Allen contributed to the team's problems, while goalkeeper Oscar Ustari continued to excel. Offensively, Messi and his forward line spent the majority of the first half in their own half. The second-half performance improved, but the team appeared to be overly reliant on a moment of Messi magic to help them advance. Inter Miami was the only Major League Soccer team to advance to the expanded tournament's knockout round. The team defied expectations with a 2–1 victory over Portuguese club FC Porto, which was heavily favored going into the match. That performance caught the attention of soccer fans around the world, as Miami became the first MLS team to beat a European club in an official competition. Messi exits the tournament with a perfect record of group stage advancement. The Argentine has never been eliminated in the group stage of an official tournament, whether playing for a club or his Argentina national team. Despite Sunday's loss, Miami's tournament play showed many positives as the team prepares to return to its MLS schedule. Besides the win over Porto, Miami also drew with Brazilian club Palmeiras, a team that advanced to the quarterfinals of the competition on Saturday. Miami is in sixth place in the Eastern Conference with an 8–3–5 record, 11 points behind first-place Philadelphia Union. Last season, Miami won the MLS Supporters' Shield for the league's best regular-season record.
