Lionel Messi and Inter Miami exit Club World Cup after 4-0 loss to PSG in round of 16
The champions of Europe booted Lionel Messi and his Inter Miami teammates out of the Club World Cup on Sunday.
Paris Saint-Germain, Messi's former club and the team that won the Champions League final only a few weeks ago, contained one of the game's greatest players at Mercedes-Benz Stadium and routed Inter Miami 4–0 in the round of 16. Defensive struggles again plagued Miami, with all four of PSG's goals coming before halftime. An early injury to defender Noah Allen contributed to the team's problems, while goalkeeper Oscar Ustari continued to excel. Offensively, Messi and his forward line spent the majority of the first half in their own half. The second-half performance improved, but the team appeared to be overly reliant on a moment of Messi magic to help them advance.
Inter Miami was the only Major League Soccer team to advance to the expanded tournament's knockout round. The team defied expectations with a 2–1 victory over Portuguese club FC Porto, which was heavily favored going into the match. That performance caught the attention of soccer fans around the world, as Miami became the first MLS team to beat a European club in an official competition.
Messi exits the tournament with a perfect record of group stage advancement. The Argentine has never been eliminated in the group stage of an official tournament, whether playing for a club or his Argentina national team.
Despite Sunday's loss, Miami's tournament play showed many positives as the team prepares to return to its MLS schedule. Besides the win over Porto, Miami also drew with Brazilian club Palmeiras, a team that advanced to the quarterfinals of the competition on Saturday.
Miami is in sixth place in the Eastern Conference with an 8–3–5 record, 11 points behind first-place Philadelphia Union. Last season, Miami won the MLS Supporters' Shield for the league's best regular-season record.

A'ja Wilson Puts Aces Ahead Late and Has 26 Points, 18 Rebounds in 84-81 Win Over Mercury
Aja Wilson made the go-ahead basket with 22 seconds left and finished with 26 points, 18 rebounds, and seven assists as the Las Vegas Aces beat Phoenix 84–81 on Sunday, ending the Mercury's six-game winning streak. Wilson made a difficult layup on a feed from Chelsea Gray to make it 83–81 after Jackie Young snared an offensive rebound for the Aces. Aaliyah Nye made a free throw with 7.1 seconds left before the Mercury failed to get a good look on a third straight possession in the final minute. Nye, a rookie, had career bests of five 3-pointers and 16 points for the Aces (8–8). Young added 15 points and Jewell Loyd had 10. Wilson tied Lisa Leslie for the most 25-point, 15-rebound games in WNBA history at 13. Alyssa Thomas led Phoenix (12–5) with 16 points, seven rebounds, and eight assists. Kahleah Copper added 15 points, Sami Whitcomb had 14, and Satou Sabally 10. Whitcomb had four 3-pointers, giving her at least four in five straight games, tying a WNBA record. There were 10 ties and 17 lead changes in the game, which was tied at 40 at halftime. Wilson had 10 points in the third quarter, which concluded with the Aces leading 59–50. Phoenix scored the first nine points of the fourth quarter and surged to a 67–62 lead. Vegas went back ahead on Loyd's 3-pointer with 3:14 to play, and the lead changed hands five times after that.

New faces lead US women to familiar result: 4-0 win over Ireland
CINCINNATI: The US women's national team's depth was on display Sunday in Cincinnati when the squad's backups dominated Ireland for a 4-0 victory in a friendly. US coach Emma Hayes made 11 changes from the lineup that defeated Ireland 4-0 on Thursday and didn't miss a beat as the Americans won their fourth straight match without allowing a goal. In fact, Ireland did not put a shot on frame. Izzy Rodriguez, who made her USWNT debut along with Sam Meza, scored in the 42nd minute for a 2-0 lead while Emma Sears played a part in the first three goals. Sears and Rodriguez played together at Ohio State, less than two hours away. Sandwiching the Rodriguez goal, Lynn Biyendolo opened the scoring in the 11th minute and Yazmeen Ryan extended the lead to 3-0 in the 66th with her first goal. Alyssa Thompson made it 4-0 in the 86th on an assist by Claire Hutton. The win was the 600th in USWNT history in just 765 matches. It was such a young lineup that Biyendolo had almost twice as many appearances (81) as the rest of the starting lineup (41), which represented the fewest combined matches of any USWNT lineup in the past 24 years. It didn't matter. Sears made a cross to Biyendolo in the middle of the box and she ripped a shot for her 25th goal. Rodriguez got on the board when Sears took an entry pass from Olivia Moultrie and forced a save by Courtney Brosnan (six saves). The ball came to Rodriguez and she did not hesitate on the rebound. The role was reversed on the third goal. Sears fed Moultrie and she found an unmarked Ryan. A minute after Thompson's goal, hometown favorite Rose Lavelle entered the match to a standing ovation and nearly scored in the ensuing minute. The US will get a much sterner test on Wednesday when they play Canada in Washington, D.C., to complete the three-match window.
