'Undermining the president': Zimbabwean editor spent night in jail for satirical article

Veteran Zimbabwean journalist and Editor of Zimbabwe Independent newspaper Faith Zaba was arrested in Harare on controversial allegations of undermining the authority of or insulting the president.
The arrest, which has attracted widespread condemnation from human rights bodies and press freedom watchdogs, stems from a satirical article published under the "Muckracker" column criticising President Emmerson Mnangagwa who is current chair of the Southern African Development Community (SADC).

The article was published on Friday by the independent weekly newspaper, with the headline: 'When you become mafia state'.
On Tuesday, Zaba's lawyer Chris Mhike told IOL News that Zaba would spend the night in police custody before appearing before the Harare Magistrate's Court on Wednesday morning.
The satirical column "Muckracker" published in the Zimbabwe Independent before Editor Faith Zaba was arrested.

Mhike said after the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) recorded a warned and cautioned statement from Zaba, the police insisted on detaining her overnight, pending a court appearance provisionally set for Wednesday.
'We are deeply disappointed with the determination of the authorities to lock Zaba up, even in the face of medical confirmation of her current severe illness,' Mhike told IOL News.
Meanwhile, the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has called for Zaba's unconditional release.
The Zimbabwe Human Rights Monitors Platform has also demanded the release of the editor.
'We call for the release of Faith Zaba, who was recently arrested and charged with undermining the authority of the president,' the Zimbabwe Human Rights Monitors Platform posted on X.
Senior Alpha Media Holdings and HStv journalist Blessed Mhlanga recently spent 72 days at the crowded Harare Remand Prison after HStv broadcast utterances by former Zanu PF central committee member, Blessed Geza, calling for President Mnangagwa to step down.
In May, Mhlanga was granted provisional release from prison.
Commenting on Zaba's arrest, Mhlanga wrote on X: On February 24, it was me, today it's my boss Fath Zaba, tomorrow it's you. The editor of @Zimindependent being arrested over a satire column is some crazy stuff. In this cold she is braving the cells for allowing free speech. Nobody is safe even those who are arresting people'.

George court interpreter accused of duping taxi owners in fraud scheme
A 29-year-old court interpreter, Siphelele Appollis, briefly appeared in the George Magistrate's Court this week following his arrest on charges of corruption, fraud, forgery and uttering. George Herald reports that, according to a media statement issued by the Hawks, the George-based Serious Corruption Investigation team arrested Appollis on Tuesday after an investigation into allegations that he posed as someone with court authority to defraud two local taxi owners. The incident reportedly occurred in March 2024. Appollis allegedly introduced himself to the taxi owners as someone who could assist with the release of their impounded vehicles, at a fee of R3 000 each. Once an agreement was reached, he filled out official complaint forms, which were filed at the Thembalethu Police Station. He allegedly stole the documents from the Thembalethu court and forged the signature of a magistrate to make the paperwork appear legitimate. Watch: 5 dead, 13 injured in N3 crash near Marianhill in KZN Five people, including two police officers, died and 13 others were injured – three critically – when a minibus taxi veered off the N3 and rolled down a steep embankment near the Marianhill Toll Plaza in KZN late yesterday afternoon. The Witness reports that the crash occurred just before the Shongweni off-ramp at around 17:30. ALS Paramedics and Medical Services confirmed that emergency personnel were on the scene at the time. Video footage shared by ALS Paramedics and Medical Services showed medics working on the steep slope where the taxi landed. According to the KZN Department of Transport, the taxi, carrying 17 passengers, was travelling to Lxopo when the driver allegedly lost control while trying to avoid a reckless Polo driver. The vehicle plunged about 50m down the embankment. Truck drivers who witnessed the crash reported the Polo's erratic driving to nearby Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) officials, who were in the area following a multidisciplinary roadblock earlier in the day. KZN MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma, confirmed the fatalities and said efforts were underway to trace the families of the deceased. 'We express our deepest condolences to the families of the victims. According to our dedicated team from the Road Traffic Inspectorate, the taxi veered off the road and rolled 50m down the embankment,' said Duma. Three passengers are in serious condition, and nine others sustained minor injuries. All were transported to R.K. Khan Hospital. 'We salute emergency rescue personnel who are working professionally to remove the bodies of the deceased,' Duma added. Duma raised concerns about the spike in winter road fatalities. Citing Road Traffic Management Corporation figures, he noted that over 900 people died in June alone. 'I have mandated the RTI team to sustain the 'No Nonsense, Zero Tolerance, and Alufakwa Campaign',' he said.
