Chase Celebrates Major Milestone in its Multi-Billion Dollar Retail Expansion

Business Wire4 days ago
NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--JPMorganChase today celebrated the construction of its 1,000 th branch since launching its market expansion initiative in 2018, marking a significant milestone toward improving access to financial services across the nation.
At a ribbon-cutting ceremony in Charlotte, North Carolina, JPMorganChase executives joined local community members to officially open the new branch and highlight the positive impact Chase branches have on local neighborhoods.
'Every day, nearly one million customers visit our branches to manage their finances or get advice on how to save, spend and grow their money,' said Jennifer Roberts, CEO of Chase Consumer Banking. 'We are very proud of the role we play to serve these customers while providing opportunities for long-term economic growth through construction, community investments and local hiring.'
Chase will continue expanding its presence in low-to-moderate income and rural communities with limited access to traditional banking services, as well as markets such as Boston, Charlotte, Philadelphia, Raleigh and Washington, D.C.
Over the past seven years, Chase has opened more branches than all large bank peers combined, bringing affordable and convenient financial services to communities in all lower 48 states. Today, Chase covers more Americans than any other bank, with 68% of the U.S. population within an accessible drive time to one of its branches. The bank is on track to meet its goal of 500 new branches by early 2027, contributing to its long-term plans of reaching 75% of the national population within an accessible drive and over 50% within each state.
Chase Branches: Catalysts for Economic Growth
Chase branches are more than just financial service providers; they are vital engines driving economic activity and supporting local communities. JPMorganChase's internal research highlights the substantial impact these branches have on lending, employment, customer engagement and deposit balances.
Annually, Chase branches originate billions in business and home loans, directly fueling local lending activity and fostering economic growth in surrounding areas. With a workforce of around 50,000 customer-facing staff, Chase branches offer significant employment opportunities, bolstering the local economy.
Chase branches also play a pivotal role in supporting local economic activity and retail spending, serving approximately 300 million visiting customers each year and handling around 900 million transactions.
These findings reveal that new branches have stronger retail activity and marked increases in business activity, mortgage originations and household income in areas with Chase branches compared to matched areas without them.
"We've long recognized that our branches serve as storefronts for all our capabilities across the firm, from banking to lending to wealth management and business formation," Roberts added. "What's truly exciting is seeing them act as catalysts for economic activity in the communities we serve."
When this expansion is completed, Chase will have added more than 1,100 branches, renovated 4,300 locations, entered 80 markets and hired more than 10,500 employees to its Consumer Bank team since 2018.
'Our commitment to local communities extends beyond providing financial services,' said Tom Horne, Head of Consumer Branch Banking at Chase. 'From construction to day-to-day branch operations, we hire locally, ensuring that our expansion directly contributes to the economic vitality of the areas we serve. We're not just building branches; we are investing in the long-term health and future of our communities.'
Chase is actively hiring to support these new branches, building on its more than 50,000 local bankers, advisors, business relationship managers and branch managers, who together operate as a local team of experts to serve customer needs. Chase offers $20 – $25 per hour, depending on work location, as minimum base pay for U.S. overtime-eligible employees, as well as a comprehensive benefits package that is valued on average at approximately $19,500 per employee.
The bank offers a variety of different branch formats, depending on the specific needs of the community. Some locations include meeting rooms and private spaces for personal conversations, while high-volume, full-service branches feature multiple transaction windows.
Chase also operates 19 Community Centers across the country as part of an overall effort to expand access to banking, tools and advice to people who might not otherwise have access to them. These Community Centers are part of Chase's community-inspired branch network, which includes 300 locations in underserved areas.
Ramping Up Affluent Offering
In addition to the new branches, Chase is expanding its affluent offering by opening new J.P. Morgan Financial Centers in many markets across the country, bringing a highly personalized level of service to millions of potential clients. The bank plans to have 31 Financial Centers open by the end of next year.
Today, Chase serves nearly 80 million consumers and close to 6 million small businesses with a broad range of financial services, including personal banking, credit cards, mortgages, auto financing, investment advice, small business loans and payment processing.

Reddit Accelerates Innovation and Slashes Build Times with Buildkite

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Buildkite Pty Ltd., a leader in scalable software delivery solutions, today announced that Reddit, one of the world's largest online communities with more than over 400M weekly active users, has successfully migrated its mobile continuous integration and delivery (CI/CD) pipelines to Buildkite, dramatically improving build performance, reliability, and developer autonomy across its mobile engineering organization. By adopting Buildkite's high-performance hosted agents and dynamic pipeline primitives, Reddit has reduced build queue times to just seconds and accelerated build speeds by 30% for both Android and iOS workflows, while maintaining cost efficiency. By adopting Buildkite's high-performance hosted agents and dynamic pipeline primitives, Reddit has reduced build queue times to just seconds and accelerated build speeds by 30% for both Android and iOS workflows, while maintaining cost efficiency. Share 'With Buildkite, we finally have the reliability and performance at scale that our mobile teams were missing,' said Ken Struys, Reddit's Director of Developer Experience. 'We've seen a significant improvement to the overall developer experience, and both Android and iOS CI are more than 30% faster on Buildkite.' Facing growing demands from millions of global users and a rapidly expanding codebase, Reddit's mobile teams had outgrown their previous CI/CD provider. Lack of ability to control the build environment meant they couldn't use custom Docker images (as they can with Buildkite). The team also struggled with configuration complexity, with 6,000 lines of YAML split across multiple files, in addition to unreliable builds due to environment drift and dependency failures. Reddit's migration to Buildkite, affecting over 200 mobile engineers, was completed ahead of schedule and involved a full transition of both Android and iOS mono repositories. The company leveraged Buildkite's composable pipeline primitives to create custom workflows that seamlessly integrated with Bazel and BuildBuddy, allowing both iOS and Android apps to be built efficiently on Linux runners with remote execution. Dynamic pipelines enabled Reddit to build powerful CI systems with less cruft and less code repetition. Comprehensive benchmarking revealed that Reddit's builds now run up to 30% faster, with job queue times consistently dropping to around five seconds. Buildkite's Git caching and container caching features were 'absolute game changers,' reducing Git checkout times from several minutes to 30-40 seconds. Intelligent build cancellation and log customization further improved developer experience and operational efficiency. The migration was conducted by a remarkably lean core team. 'We built most of the Android pipelines and the iOS pipelines with two people,' said Struys. 'You don't need massive engineering resources to use Buildkite, but the scale is tremendous. We've got 170 plus engineers on it now, and most of our builds are running like 12 to 15 jobs in each field now.' It was also executed with exceptional care through a staged approach, including having shadow builds running in parallel to production systems to ensure a zero-risk transition. Buildkite's team provided responsive support and delivered custom feature requests, including a GitHub App for GitHub Enterprise Server, throughout the process. "Reddit's successful migration exemplifies the transformative power of modern, composable CI/CD architecture," said Dan Ring, Vice President of Product at Buildkite, who worked closely with the company on the migration. "When engineering organizations outgrow traditional CI/CD limitations, they need a platform that can deliver both immediate performance gains and long-term scalability. Reddit's experience demonstrates what's possible when you combine Buildkite's high-performance hosted agents with our flexible, composable primitives. This isn't just about faster builds, it's about unleashing engineering teams to innovate at the speed their users demand." For more information, see Reddit's blog post here. Mortgage Rates Drop to Lowest Level in 10 Months, Upping Purchasing Power in a Buyer-Friendly Market

SEATTLE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The daily average mortgage rate dropped to 6.57% on August 4, the lowest level in 10 months, according to a new report from Redfin, the real estate brokerage powered by Rocket. That means a homebuyer on a $3,000 monthly budget has gained roughly $20,000 in purchasing power since May, when the daily average rate hit a recent peak of 7.08%. A buyer on that budget can afford a $458,750 home with today's mortgage rate, compared to the $439,000 home they could have bought with May's peak. To look at affordability another way, the monthly mortgage payment on the median-priced U.S. home, which goes for roughly $447,000, is $2,862 with today's average rate. In mid-May, when rates were sitting above 7%, the monthly payment would have been $2,983, over $100 more. Mortgage rates fell over the weekend following a weaker-than-expected July jobs report. The U.S. added fewer jobs than anticipated, and the unemployment rate ticked up, which pushed up the chances of the Fed cutting interest rates in September. 'This dip in mortgage rates gives house hunters a window of opportunity to buy before summer ends,' said Daryl Fairweather, Redfin's chief economist. 'While housing costs are still fairly high, the recent decline in rates boosts purchasing power and improves overall homebuying conditions. Combined with the surplus of homes for sale on the market, serious buyers may want to jump in sooner rather than later.' House hunters should take note that there are hundreds of thousands more home sellers than buyers in the market, giving many prospective buyers an opportunity to negotiate home prices down and ask for concessions. But the gap between sellers and buyers is starting to shrink as new listings decline, with would-be sellers opting to stay put instead of listing their home in a buyer's market. South Floridians spend more on transportation than almost anyone else in U.S.

Driving in South Florida can be harrowing — and costly. Of residents in the 10 largest U.S. metropolitan areas, Miamians tie Houstonians for spending the most on transportation. Roughly 20% of what people residing in Greater Miami spend each year goes toward getting around, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. On average, that's more than $14,400 per household in the tri-county area of Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach. Americans in general are spending more on cars now than almost ever before. According to Kelley Blue Book, new car buyers paid almost $50,000 per purchase at the end of 2024, just under 2022 highs, when supply chain disruptions led to shortages of new vehicles on the market. And that number doesn't yet take into account the Trump administration's 15% tariffs on auto imports from Japan and the European Union, said Chairman Howard Dvorkin. Those costs hit especially hard in Greater Miami, where residents generally earn less than their counterparts across the country. Tri-county residents' net automobile expenditures — the difference between what they paid for their cars and what they recouped by selling their old ones — accounted for nearly half of Miamians' transportation costs and 9% of their total annual expenses, again tying Houston, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Necessity explains part of that expenditure, said Cathy Dos Santos, director of Transit Alliance Miami, a local nonprofit promoting walkability, bikeability and better public transit. Greater Miami, she noted, offers few practical alternatives to driving. 'We're asking people to choose between paying really high costs for transportation by having to own or lease their car,' Dos Santos said, 'versus spending sometimes twice as long using public transit to get around.' Unsurprisingly, most stick to their cars. And given how far many South Floridians have to travel to get to work, it's hard to blame them. Census data shows that more than half of tri-county workers commute at least 10 miles to get to work. Nearly 15% have a 50-plus mile commute. Compounding those distances is often-grinding traffic. According to INRIX, a traffic-data analytics company, Miami is the 14th most car-congested city on Earth, with local drivers spending the equivalent of nearly three days a year stuck in traffic. And those cars, whether they're actually moving or idling, need fuel — another big line-item for locals. Gas eats up roughly 4% of Greater Miamians' annual household spending, one of the highest shares among major U.S. metro areas, according to the Census Bureau. They also need to be insured. Due largely to the higher risk of severe weather conditions and rates of uninsured drivers, Floridians pay more than $3,200 in car insurance premiums — the second most in the country behind Louisianians — according to MarketWatch. But beyond necessity, culture can explain some of those high costs, says Dvorkin. 'A lot has to do with image,' he said, observing that South Floridians tend to 'like fancy cars,' even if their checking accounts are dwindling. Fancy or not, South Floridians need cars to get around because much of where they live is built for and around automobiles, said Dos Santos. That's something local governments can take steps to correct. Low-density, sprawling housing — a large portion of the tri-county's housing stock — makes it difficult for people to live within walking or biking distance of work, or even regular errands, she said. Denser, multi-use zoning can make it easier for people to meet their needs within a walk or short public transit commute of where they live, Dos Santos noted. That, along with investment in capital projects that can improve public transit across South Florida, could ultimately reduce what residents pay. But they're longer-term projects. In the immediate future, Dos Santos said, local governments can invest in cheaper, high-impact 'small infrastructure' — bike lanes, sidewalks and improved pedestrian street crossings to make non-car transit, which is the cheapest way to get around, more attractive, especially for short trips. But for those who drive dozens of miles just to get to work, as many South Floridians do, their employers can play an important role in reducing transportation costs, said United Way of Florida CEO Melissa Nelson. By providing gas or bus cards — if employees have convenient access to mass transit — for example, employers can help ease their workers' transportation cost burdens. For workers receiving government assistance, those perks can help offset costs without increasing their taxable income. That distinction is crucial. Sometimes, slight increases in income can cost assistance recipients thousands of dollars in lost benefits by pushing them over eligibility thresholds — a phenomenon known as a 'benefits cliff.' But perhaps most critically, offering flexibility — especially for work that doesn't necessarily need to be done in person or at a specific time — is key to reducing time and money spent on transportation, Nelson said. Such adaptability is especially invaluable for families with children that need to be picked up from childcare or school. Ultimately, she said, helping workers remove transportation barriers opens doors to personal and professional development. 'People who are stuck in their car for three hours a day' can't invest in themselves, said Nelson. 'They're not doing any continuing education, which means they're not training for the job that you might like them to move into.'
