
Best of technologies developed by humans cannot match nature: Padma Shri Ajai Sonkar
Two species of pearl oysters -- Pinctada margaritifera and Pteria penguin -- were obtained from the Andaman islands. One group was cultivated in a controlled, artificial environment -- developed using scientific technologies -- and the other in a natural sea environment, the marine biologist explained in an article published in the May issue of the fisheries magazine 'INFOFISH International'.
Sonkar found that in the first group, just over half survived, and most of the pearls harvested were irregular, blemished, and structurally weak.
However, of those cultivated in the natural sea environment -- rich with native microorganisms and beneficial bacteriophages -- almost all the oysters survived, with nearly three in every five of the 119 pearls harvested being of the highest quality.
In a telephonic interview with PTI, Sonkar said, "Even the best technology developed by humans cannot match the normal processes of nature."
Contrasting the environments in which the oyster species were grown, the biologist said the controlled environment featured precise biofiltration, a mechanical water flow, along with regulated alkalinity and temperature, and a limited contact with microbes.
Further, the oysters were fed with microalgae cultivated in Walne medium -- widely used for growing marine algae, Sonkar said.
The natural seawater, however, provided a self-regulating, immune-boosting, and biologically intelligent ecosystem, comprising microbial diversity, invisible phages, live phytoplankton, and a subtle biogeochemical balance, the 58-year-old said.
The oysters also received continuously flowing unfiltered seawater drawn from natural depths.
Sonkar said, "No laboratory, no simulation, however advanced, can replicate the holistic intelligence of nature," Sonkar said, describing the different outcomes from the experiments as a "deep revelation".
He added, "Where we filtered, nature added diversity. Where we controlled, nature adapted. Where we sterilised everything, nature built immunity."
The scientist was recognised with the civilian award 'Padma Shri' in March 2022 for his contributions to the field of aquaculture, specifically in developing pearl-making techniques using tissue culture.
Learnings from the experiments are not confined to pearl culture alone -- they challenge the global scientific approach itself, Sonkar said.
"(The discovery) forces us to reconsider how far we've drifted from nature, be it in soilless agriculture, cities disconnected from natural cues, or children raised in sanitised digital bubbles," the biologist said.
Sonkar graduated from Kakatiya University, Warangal, in 1990-91. He went on to acquire knowledge online across scientific fields, including genetics, nutrition and cancer, from Rice University and Harvard Medical School in the US, among others in Japan and The Netherlands.
About the experiment results, Sonkar continued, "What my oysters showed is what we must now remember: Nature is not our assistant. It is our origin. It is our greatest engineer."
The naturally present bacteriophages which the second group of oysters was exposed to are the same microscopic guardians that maintain microbial balance, he said.
"These phages do not cause disease. They are precise tools of life, invisible, yet indispensable," he stressed.
"Despite being provided with the most scientifically advanced controlled environment, in the absence of natural challenge, diversity, and complexity, the first group of oysters could not fully develop," Sonkar said.
He hopes the study to not be seen as a mere technical success, but a "philosophical awakening" -- one reminding us to revere the unmatched wisdom of nature, which is today's most urgent scientific need.
"Because when nature is not restrained, it performs at its best -- and it surpasses us all," Sonkar said.

India lost more forest area than it gained during 2015 to 2019: IIT study
Mumbai, Aug 5 (PTI) India lost 18 sq km of forest for every one sq km gained during 2015 to 2019, according to a study conducted by the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay). All states experienced a net loss in forest cover during this period, said the findings of the study, led by Prof Raaj Ramsankaran of the IIT in collaboration with Dr Vasu Sathyakumar and Sridharan Gowtham of SASTRA Deemed University. The researchers relied on digital forest cover maps obtained from the Copernicus Global Land Service (CGLS) Land Cover Map. Nearly half of the 56.3 sq km of forest gain took place in Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Rajasthan, while Tamil Nadu and West Bengal together accounted for almost half of the 1,032.89 sq km of the total loss, it said. More significantly, over half of the newly-added forest covers are islets or fragmented which do not improve 'structural connectivity," the study said. This suggests that even where forest cover is increasing on paper, the ecological value and resilience of those forests may be limited, it said. 'Our results clearly show that most of the newly added forests during 2015 to 2019 were islets, highly fragmented and ecologically vulnerable patches. There is a need to move beyond the current quantity-based afforestation approach and explicitly incorporate structural connectivity into forest planning," Dr Sathyakumar said. Large, continuous forests are ecologically healthy and foster rich biodiversity, which are resilient to natural and man-made disturbances and can self-regenerate, the study said. These unfragmented forests deliver long-term socio-economic benefits. Fragmented forests, on the other hand, disrupt the movement and survival of plants and animals. Tigers, for instance, need large, connected forests to hunt, breed and survive without coming into conflict with humans, it pointed out. However, the Forest Survey of India (FSI) indicates an overall increase in forest cover. Ramsankaran said that FSI uses different criteria from the CGLS to identify forests, and does not distinguish between fragmented and continuous forests. FSI defines forested areas as those with a minimum of 10 per cent tree canopy cover and relies on satellite imagery with a 23.5 meter resolution. In contrast, the CGLS dataset used in this study applies a 15 per cent canopy threshold and a 100 meter resolution. 'Since FSI reports do not include forest connectivity assessments, direct comparisons aren't possible. However, our data source has a globally validated accuracy of over 85 per cent, making our connectivity results reliable. If FSI's data were made available in GIS-compatible format, our methodology could be readily applied to it," added Dr Sathyakumar. The researchers have proposed a framework that uses remote sensing data and open-source digital tools to map forest connectivity at both the state and national levels. Climate change alters marine fisheries dynamics, warn marine scientists
Kochi, Aug 5 (PTI) Pointing out shifts in species biology, distribution and environmental changes, marine scientists have warned that climate change is significantly transforming marine ecosystems and fisheries in India. The scientists highlighted the need for a proper action plan for climate mitigation and ecosystem restoration at a two-day national seminar on 'Mitigating Climate Change Impact on Marine Ecosystems' jointly organised by ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) and Institute of Social Sciences (ISS), a CMFRI release here said on Tuesday. 'A key concern is the change in fish phenology—or life cycle patterns—where commercially important species are maturing at smaller sizes," CMFRI director Grinson George said in his keynote address. Silver pomfret now matures at 280 g, down from 410 g. Similar reductions in size and fertility are being seen in coastal prawns, sardines, and mackerels, affecting reproductive success and recruitment into fisheries, he said. On shifts in geography of fish stocks, he cited the northward migration of species liked the Indian oil sardine, predicted under future climate scenarios, driven by changes in food availability, rainfall, oceanic upwelling, and oxygen levels. He also said fishermen lose a considerable number of fishing days each year owing to cyclone warnings and other extreme weather events. Fishery Survey of India director K R Sreenath inaugurated the seminar. The effects of climate change are evident in coral reef bleaching in Lakshadweep, which poses a threat to biodiversity and coastal protection, he said. He said a community-oriented approach must be integral to policy-making to ensure local support and long-term success in conservation and adaptation efforts. The US reciprocal tariffs on seafood trade are further placing Indian fishers in economically vulnerable positions, he added. Sreenath said there was an urgent need for accurate prediction models for weather events and fish species distribution and abundance, which are essential for sustainable fisheries planning and disaster risk reduction. Fisheries Development Commissioner K Mohammed Koya in his address said climate change has drastically altered the Lakshadweep ecosystem, significantly impacting fisheries. He noted that seagrass beds have been damaged and stressed the need for effective restoration. Introducing seaweed farming in the lagoons could be a solution, as it attracts rare species and benefits local fishing. Vinod Sharma, Climate Change Advisor to the Sikkim government, said coastal shorelines have been changing more rapidly since 2000 due to climate events. 'The Arabian Sea has seen a recent increase in the frequency of cyclones. This has led to more saltwater intrusion in vulnerable coastal areas, which is seriously impacting the health of local communities," he said. Surajit Mahalanobis, Senior Research Fellow at ISS presented an overview of the seminar. A wide range of topics including adaptive management strategies, socio-economic resilience, nature-based solutions and innovation and emerging technologies are being discussed at the seminar that will conclude on Wednesday, the release said. Structured collaboration, policies positioning Karnataka as epicentre of Indias innovation: CM
Bengaluru, Aug 5 (PTI) Karnataka, led by Bengaluru, powers a significant share of India's electronics and R&D exports, as well as global capability centres and unicorn tally, with dynamic synergy of industry, academia, and policies making it the epicentre of the nation's innovation revolution, Chief Minister K Siddaramaiah said on Tuesday. Speaking at the inauguration of SAP Labs India's new campus at Devanahalli, Siddaramaiah said the new campus is a testament to Karnataka's strengths, tech-savvy talent, world-class infrastructure, and progressive policies that make the state a "magnet for global innovation". "Karnataka contributes over 8 per cent to India's GDP and leads the nation in IT exports with a 35 per cent share. We are proud to account for over 40 per cent of India's electronics and R&D exports, hosting 500-plus global capability centres, 400-plus R&D labs, and 18,300-plus startups," he said. Bengaluru, the startup capital of India, is home to over 40 per cent of the nation's unicorns, he said, adding, "this vibrant ecosystem where industry, academia, and government collaborate seamlessly has made Karnataka the epicentre of India's innovation revolution".
