'Karuppu' teaser out: Suriya unites with RJ Balaji for an adrenaline-packed actioner
The makers of actor Suriya's latest movie Karuppu released a teaser and posters on the occasion of his 50th birthday. Going by the looks of it, the movie promises an action-packed ride. Directed by stand-up comedian-turned-filmmaker RJ Balaji — who rose to fame with prank calls and witty movie reviews on FM radio — Karuppu marks his first collaboration with Suriya, who is fresh off the success of Retro. The movie stars Trisha Krishnan, Yogi Babu, Natarajan Subramaniam and the Malayalam stars Indrans and Swasika. Produced by Dream Warrior Pictures, Karuppu has Sai Abhyankkar composing its music, a relative newbie in the film industry. He shot to fame with the indie breakout number Katchi sera and followed it up with the chartbuster Aasai kooda. Talking about uncharted territories, the action genre is new for Balaji, too, whose filmography comprises the political satire LKG; the fantasy comedy Mookkuththi Amman; and Veetla Visesham, a remake of the Bollywood dramedy Badhaai Ho. Yet, Balaji promises an action flick that might be what fans of Suriya ordered. In Karuppu, he plays a lawyer by day and a vigilante at dusk, avatars that might be apt crowd pleasers. The teaser is full of meta references: Suriya introduces himself as Saravanan, his real name. The stylish finger gesture from Ghajini is back, and his role as barrister harks back to his role in the critically acclaimed Jai Bhim. There is also a reference to Rajinikanth's cult classic Baasha, when he leans on a table confidently and says he has another name — a line that occupies prime space in Tamil pop culture. Actor Dulquer Salmaan released the teaser's Malayalam version on social media. GK Vishnu is the movie's cinematographer, while R Kalaivanan is its editor. Suriya was last seen in the action thriller Retro, directed by Karthik Subburaj. The movie was a hit at the box office, erasing memories of his earlier movie Kanguvaa, also starring Disha Patani, that was critically panned. Trisha Krishnan's previous movie was Mani Ratnam's Thug Life.
