Napheesa Collier's record-breaking performance leads her team to victory in WNBA All-Star Game

NBC Sports21 hours ago
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Napheesa Collier made a statement with her record play on the court and the players made one with warmup shirts for the WNBA All-Star Game.
Collier scored a record 36 points to help her team beat Team Clark 151-131 in the WNBA All-Star Game that was devoid of defense but full of 4-point shots.
This record offensive effort came a year after the league's annual exhibition game was a competitive contest that pitted the U.S Olympic team against WNBA All-Stars.
The game capped off a weekend where negotiations for a new collective bargaining agreement took center stage. Players wore T-shirts while warming up before the game that said 'Pay us what you owe us.'
'The players are taking this seriously, I think it sends a really strong message that we're standing really firm in certain areas that we feel really strong that we need to improve on. I think we got the message across,' said Collier, who was named the game's MVP.
As she waited to get her trophy the crowd chanted 'Pay them more' and All-Star Brittney Sykes held up a sign saying 'Pay the Players.'
Captain Caitlin Clark was unable to play for her team because of a groin injury she suffered earlier this week. She still served as ambassador for the weekend.
Known for her deep logo 3-pointers, Clark would have loved a chance at the 4-point shot that was added to this game which was 28-feet from the basket.
Both teams took advantage of the deep shot en route to the record-setting offensive night. They combined to hit 20 of the shots on 65 attempts.
The 151 points scored by Team Collier broke the mark put up by Team Stewart of 143 in 2023 for the most in an All-Star Game. Collier's point total broke Arike Ogunbowale's previous record of 34 points scored last year.
The combined total of 282 also surpassed the previous high total of 270 set in 2023.
While there was little defense played, both teams challenged plays in the fourth quarter with the game not in doubt. One was successful and one wasn't.
The game also featured rookies Paige Bueckers, Sonia Citron and Kiki Iriafen making up the largest rookie contingent at the game since 2011. Citron and Iriafen were on Team Clark, and Bueckers was a starter for Napheesa Collier's team.
The replacements
Kelsey Mitchell of the Indiana Fever and Jackie Young of the Las Vegas Aces were announced earlier in the day as starters for Team Clark replacing Clark and Satou Sabally of Phoenix. Mitchell received a loud ovation from the fans who were happy to have another one of their players in the starting lineup. Young didn't actually start as Gabby Williams took her spot as a starter. Young injured her hip in Las Vegas' last game before All-Star weekend.
New rules
Besides the 4-point shot, the game also included a 20-second shot clock instead of the normal 24 and the ability for teams to substitute during live play. There also were no free throws shot — not that there usually are many in an All-Star Game — until the final two minutes of the game. Instead players were automatically awarded the points. The only free throws were shot was by Skylar Diggins with 1:01 left in the game. She made both. Diggins also had the first triple-double in All-Star history.
All four rules had been used at some point during previous All-Star Games, but not all in the same one.
Stars put on show for celebrities
The All-Star Game brought the stars out in Indianapolis. Rapper GloRilla performed at halftime while musicians Common and Jennifer Hudson sat courtside near WNBA legends Lisa Leslie and Tamika Catchings. Indiana Pacers star Tyrese Haliburton sat in a suite and got the loudest ovation from the crowd when he was shown on the videoboard.

David Peterson proved as Mets lone reliable again when needed most

Access the Mets beat like never before Join Post Sports+ for exciting subscriber-only features, including real-time texting with Mike Puma about the inside buzz on the Mets. Try it free In the past 35 games, the Mets have received just five starts of at least six innings. All of them have been courtesy of David Peterson. The lone reliable and healthy Mets starter all season has been their All-Star lefty, who again provided desperately needed length and excellence in Sunday's 3-2 victory over the Reds at Citi Field. Peterson's six innings, in which he allowed one unearned run on four hits and a walk, lowered his ERA to 2.90 and shrunk his home ERA to 1.91 over 10 starts. It was ho-hum for Peterson, and would have been revelatory for any other Mets starter. David Peterson (23) throws a pitch in the first inning against the Cincinnati Reds at Citi Field, Sunday, July 20, 2025, in Queens, NY. Corey Sipkin for the NY POST Clay Holmes — the owner of the last non-Peterson quality start for the Mets, way back on June 7 — has appeared to tire in his first full season as an MLB starter. Kodai Senga and Sean Manaea are building up on the fly (and slowly, especially in Manaea's case). Frankie Montas has not yet finished six innings in four starts. Because of the starters' inability to pitch deep into games (and often an inability to pitch well in games), the Mets bullpen has been taxed. Entering play Sunday, their relievers had logged the third-most innings (142 ²/₃) in the majors since June 8. During that stretch, the bullpen's 5.68 ERA has been fourth worst in baseball, likely a reflection of overuse taking its toll. CHECK OUT THE LATEST MLB STANDINGS AND METS STATS This has made Peterson invaluable. With the starters around him still stretching out, Peterson acknowledged that it 'crosses your mind' how important distance is. 'I don't necessarily see it as pressure,' said Peterson, who ranks third in the NL in ERA among lefty qualifiers. 'We're obviously trying to go as deep as we can in every game. That's our job and trying to give the team a chance to win.' David Peterson (23) pitches in the first inning when the New York Mets played the Cincinnati Reds Sunday, July 20, 2025 at Citi Field in Queens, NY. Robert Sabo for NY Post Manager Carlos Mendoza added: 'For him to go six there, it was solid.' Particularly because of how it began. Peterson threw 43 pitches in his first two innings, which included the Reds' only run against him — aided by a poor stretch from impromptu first baseman Mark Vientos on the first batter of the game. A ground single from Matt McClain and a hard single up the middle from Elly De La Cruz put the Mets in a hole. But Peterson used a double play to escape further damage. Check out more newsletters Peterson loaded the bases in the second inning on a single, a walk and a hit-by-pitch, but used a biting slider that McClain swung over to navigate out of the jam. After surviving, Peterson thrived and faced the minimum from the third through sixth. A bullpen without many trustworthy pieces needed appearances from Huascar Brazobán, Reed Garrett, Edwin Díaz (who stumbled) and Ryne Stanek to snap a three-game losing streak. 'When we have certain guys [in the bullpen] being used,' Peterson said, 'you want to be able to try and get as deep as you can to get it to those guys late in the game.'

Kelsey Plum's Request for Caitlin Clark Fan Sparks Outrage

Los Angeles Sparks guard Kelsey Plum is taking some flak for an interaction with a fan wearing a Caitlin Clark shirt. Ahead of the Sparks' game versus the Chicago Sky on Sunday, June 29, Plum spotted a fan wearing a Clark shirt while watching the team's shootaround. That led to Plum walking over to the fan and tossing her a Sparks shirt and requesting that the fan wear that over the shirt donning the name of the Indiana Fever star. The fan obliged and took a picture with Plum after. "You can't wear that in the gym. What is this?' Plum said to the fan, before adding that the fan needs to "do better." The interaction was all in good fun, but some people didn't pick up on that. "Caitlin Clark has single-handedly transformed that league, increasing attendance and attention several fold," the New York Post's Jon Heyman wrote in response to the video. "The other players should be thanking her, not dissing her and/or mistreating her." "Doesn't even try to hide her jealousy," one commenter said of Plum. "If it wasn't for Caitlin, that woman probably wouldn't even know the league existed." "She's a hater," another reply to the video said of Plum. There is a widely-held belief among Clark's supporters that her league mates are jealous of her success and popularity. Plum's interaction with the fan, along with the fact that Clark was voted as the ninth-best guard by her peers in WNBA All-Star voting, won't help to erase that Plum's Request for Caitlin Clark Fan Sparks Outrage first appeared on Men's Journal on Jul 1, 2025

Dave Portnoy Begrudgingly Compliments Angel Reese

There are few, if any bigger critics of Chicago Sky star Angel Reese than Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy, who also happens to be a huge supporter of Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark. However, even he had to give Reese props for her business acumen, something that has been on full display lately. Since entering the WNBA, Reese has been the center of jokes surrounding her infamous ability to grab rebounds off her own missed shots, which have been called "mebounds" by her detractors. The Sky star has taken it all in stride and recently filed to trademark the phrase and is now selling merchandise under the same name. Upon the unveiling of the Angel Reese 1 Mebounds sneakers from Reebok, Portnoy took to social media to pay his respect to Reese for turning a joke into a business opportunity. "I hate (sports sense) Angel Reese. Hate her. That's how much it pains me to admit how brilliant it was for her team to trademark Mebounds and make it her thing. Brilliant. I hate how brilliant it is," Portnoy admitted. If you go to Reese's official website, it is filled with "Mebounds" merch, including shirts, hats and even slides. Reese is also doing some good with proceeds from the sales, which will be used to "support cyber bully prevention through The Angel C. Reese Foundation." Reese, who is set to play in her second WNBA All-Star game on Saturday, is averaging 14 points, 12.6 rebounds, 3.8 assists, 1.5 steals and 0.6 blocks per game and has been playing some of the best basketball of her career this Portnoy Begrudgingly Compliments Angel Reese first appeared on Men's Journal on Jul 19, 2025
