Malaysian leader Anwar wins a reprieve in a lawsuit alleging sexual misconduct

Independent10-06-2025

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on Tuesday won a reprieve in a civil suit accusing him of sexual misconduct, after a court approved his bid to temporarily suspend the trial due to start next week.
The suit was filed in 2021 by his former research assistant, Muhammed Yusoff Rawther. Yusoff, 32, alleged that Anwar sexually harassed him in 2018 — before Anwar became premier, in November 2022. Anwar, 77, denies any wrongdoing and accuses Yusoff of fabricating the charge to ruin his political career.
The case gained attention after Anwar sought immunity from prosecution, sparking criticism from the opposition and others. The High Court dismissed his application last week, saying everyone is equal before the law. Anwar has turned to the nation's top court, which will hear his case on July 21.
The Court of Appeal on Tuesday approved Anwar's bid for a temporary stay to the trial that was due to start June 16, pending next month's hearing in the Federal Court.
Anwar wants the Federal Court to rule on several legal questions including whether a sitting prime minister has immunity from lawsuits stemming from alleged private events before his appointment. His lawyers claimed the legal action could impair his ability to govern and risk destabilizing the government.
The case could undermine Anwar, who heads a unity government comprised of rival factions. He has denied seeking personal immunity or trying to escape legal scrutiny.
'It concerns the integrity of our constitutional system and the need to ensure that high public office is protected from litigation that may be strategically timed, politically motivated or institutionally disruptive,' he wrote on Facebook last week.
Anwar, a former reformist opposition leader, was previously jailed twice for sodomy. He has said the charges against him were manufactured by the government to thwart his opposition party. Anwar was pardoned by the king in 2018, just months before the alleged sexual assault on Yusoff.
Yusoff is currently in detention and on trial after police found drugs and fake pistols in his car last September. He has said he was framed by those in power. The court will decide this Thursday whether he needs to enter his defense, or acquit him.

Rogue builder who charged £100k for kitchen refurbs and ripped out homes before fleeing to go on hols is jailed

A ROGUE builder who charged £100,000 for refurbishments and ripped out homes before fleeing on holiday has been locked up. Jamie Brown ripped off 19 families and fled with their money after wrecking their houses in the spring and summer of 2023. 4 The 56-year-old even ripped out the kitchen of a couple who were weeks away from having a baby and ran away without refitting it. Brown, who lived in Bristol, boasted about having over 25 years of experience carrying out "quality, fully guaranteed kitchen installations in and around the South West and Wales". The dad went on holidays and his wife posted glam pics of their adventures after he left the lives of other families in tatters. Brown was sentenced at Bristol Crown Court for 19 counts of theft. Charges were also brought against his wife Nina, who was listed as a company director at the time, but the case against her was formally discontinued in court last week. Brown was sentenced to 18 months in prison, BristolLive reported. The court heard he "lied and lied consistently" in his schemes. The cowboy builder would warn prospective customers that they needed to agree to the job and pay upfront swiftly, or prices would go up. Once they paid him and he ripped out their kitchen, he would disappear and provide a myriad of excuses. He later claimed he had a "mental breakdown" and his company had gone into liquidation, telling the distraught families they would not be receiving any money back or any new kitchens. The court heard that many had "wiped out" their savings and taken out massive loans to pay the dodgy builder - but were left with their kitchens in ruins. One victim told the court how they discovered Brown was splashing out on holidays while their lives were in tatters. They said: "What made it worse was that he continued to go on all these lovely holidays. "His wife would post pictures of them going on holidays, one after another, all the time. I stopped looking because she blocked me on Facebook, but friends would send me screenshots. "I was left thinking 'these are holidays we should be going on, not him'." The court heard that victims were left without running water and without anyway of cooking. "We didn't have running water, no way of cooking, no washing machine. We rigged up a temporary thing in the garage, but he left it and that went on for ten weeks, with different excuses. "In the end I rang Howdens and they said they could deliver the kitchen, but it would have to be paid for. That's when I realised for sure what was going on, it was devastating." There was some dispute in court about the total amount of money that he had stolen. The prosecution opened their case and put the amount at £101,602.91, but Brown's defence counsel David Sapiecha said the true figure was £84,817. The court was told that the couple are in the process of selling their home and the proceeds would be used to pay back every penny to people who had lost money. 4 4

Judge accuses phone-smuggling mother-of-four of getting pregnant again to avoid prison... then gives her a suspended sentence anyway!

A judge accused a mother of getting pregnant again to avoid prison in an extraordinary blast over her failure to use contraception. Tanya Parker, 36, helped smuggle steroids, mobile phones and tobacco into a jail six years ago as part of her crook husband David Bradley's plan while he was in jail himself. But the pair's sentencing hearing took an unexpected twist as barrister Cathlyn Orchard, defending Parker, confirmed the defendant was between six to seven weeks pregnant. Visibly astonished Judge Dean Kershaw replied: "Are you seriously telling me that? Knowing the position these two are in, she's pregnant again?" He continued: "She understands there's something called contraception, having a child knowing the position both of them are in." Ms Orchard, who had stated the pregnancy was 'unplanned', replied saying that contraception 'doesn't always work' prompting the judge to question as to whether Parker had used any – and suggest that she was attempting to 'manipulate' the sentencing process. The court heard the couple, from Coventry, West Midlands, already have four children together and were childhood sweethearts. The barrister said: "I haven't gone into that detail. She is not wanting to be pregnant and she is conflicted in saying that because she is going to keep the child. It couldn't have come at a worse time." Judge Kershaw responded at the hearing on Thursday: "It all smacks to me it is another thing she is mentioning to avoid custody.' After briefly speaking with Parker in the dock Ms Orchard told the court: "She wasn't taking the pill and doesn't know why. "It wasn't to try and get pregnant or to manipulate." In reply Judge Kershaw said: "What did she possibly think - having had children - happens? That some angel would come down and stop her getting pregnant? "It looks to me she is trying in some way to manipulate the process thinking this will be extra mitigation. It won't. It won't work with me." He went on to point out the numerous lies Parker had told about her involvement in the 2019 HMP Birmingham contraband racket and rejected a claim she was untruthful due to 'panic'. Judge Kershaw told Birmingham Crown Court he was not trying to 'tell people how to lead their lives privately, personally and sexually', but he added: "I am utterly shocked someone in her position could have allowed herself to be in that position she is in now." Ms Orchard went on to say Parker had been put under 'enormous pressure' and placed in an 'impossible situation' at the time by Bradley, who she had been with since the age of 16. He had been remanded in custody at the time for a number of domestic and commercial burglaries, which involved ripping ATM machines from walls. Bradley was later handed lengthy terms of imprisonment. In his sentencing remarks Judge Kershaw took a further swipe at Parker's life choices and said: "It's not for me to comment but you were in a relationship with someone you knew who was a man who had chosen in 2018 to go into people's homes and steal. "You have chosen that's someone you want to be with and you have children." He added: "You chose your relationship over the safety of the prison. That's the reality of what happened." Ultimately, he decided not to jail Parker concluding 'the public do not need protection from you'. Parker admitted two offences of conspiring to convey prohibited articles into prison. She was sentenced to an 18-month community order with 100 hours of unpaid work and 30 days of rehabilitation activity. Judge Kershaw concluded Bradley, aged 34, had abused his partner's loyalty, adding he was the 'leading light' of the scheme. But he took into account he had already served a lengthy term behind bars and had shown he could 'lead a good and productive' life since his release in October. Bradley, who admitted the same two offences as his wife as well as a charge relating to having a phone in prison, was sentenced to 24 months suspended for 18 months. He was ordered to carry out 160 hours of unpaid work and 30 days of rehabilitation activity. The couple had used corrupt prison guard Christopher Lawley to physically smuggle the contraband into HMP Birmingham. The 43-year-old of Bexley Grove, West Bromwich had admitting three offences of conveying or conspiracy to convey prohibited articles into prison. He was sentenced to two years and two months at hearing in May this year.
