KUALA LUMPUR: As anticipation grows over a much-awaited "extraordinary tribute" announcement later today, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim last night teased Malaysians with a short video clip on his Facebook page.
The 13-second clip featured a snippet from one of his old speeches, which had previously gone viral and was often used by his political opponents.

In the clip, Anwar can be heard saying: "Saya ulang, hari ini dalam pilihan raya kita menang, saya umum..." (I repeat, today if we win the election, I will announce...).
The video then cuts to a classic Malay tune, "Tunggu Sekejap", loosely translated as wait for a moment by the late legendary artiste Tan Sri P. Ramlee, a subtle hint to the public to be patient and wait for today's announcement.
It was reported yesterday that Communications Minister and government spokesman Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said Anwar's highly anticipated announcement would be made at 10.30am today.
In a separate Facebook post, Anwar had said that the announcement would serve as a testament to the shared commitment towards creating a more equitable and prosperous future.

ACCCIM welcomes new measures to ease cost of living

PETALING JAYA: The slew of measures announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will help to ease the cost of living and spur household consumption expenditure, says the Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia (ACCCIM). "ACCCIM welcomes the Prime Minister's announcement of measures to show its appreciation to rakyat, including one-off cash aid of RM100 for all Malaysians aged 18 and above under the Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (Sara) aid initiative, Rahmah madani sales and the freezing of toll hikes. "Malaysians will enjoy a lower RON95 petrol price of RM1.99 per litre once the targeted subsidies come into effect in September," it said in a statement on Wednesday (July 23). ACCCIM also said it hoped the new targeted subsidies would be implemented smoothly. ALSO READ: RON95 petrol price to be lowered to RM1.99 per litre for eligible Malaysians On the special holiday on Sept 15 in appreciation of Hari Malaysia celebration on Sept 16, ACCCIM said this would encourage local travel over the long weekend break but this could lead to additional labour costs, which would add to the overall cost of doing business. ACCCIM also said it was looking forward to the tabling of the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) on July 31 as well as Budget 2026 later, adding that the government's five-year blueprint and spending plan would ensure the continuity of national development, prioritise sustainable economic resilience and high-quality investment. "Malaysia must continue to maintain pro-investment and business-friendly policies to attract and retain both domestic and foreign investments, fostering economic growth," it added.

Fisheries amendment bill 2025 raises penalties for offences

KUALA LUMPUR: The Fisheries (Amendment) Bill 2025 was tabled for its first reading in Parliament today, proposing stricter penalties for fisheries-related offences. The bill seeks to amend the Fisheries Act 1985, raising fines from RM20,000 to RM100,000 for general violations. Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu confirmed that the second and third readings will follow during the current parliamentary session. The amendments aim to modernise fisheries management in line with national and international industry developments. Key changes include updates to Section 26, which now covers offences involving destructive fishing methods such as explosives, poisons, and electric devices. Subsection 27(1) has also been revised to prohibit harming or trading aquatic mammals and turtles, including their parts, outside state jurisdiction. The bill increases fines for offences involving protected marine species from RM5,000 to RM250,000. 'Subclause 21(b) seeks to amend subsection 27(4) of Act 317, to raise the fine for offences involving any aquatic mammal or turtle, or any part or derivative thereof, in Malaysian fisheries waters,' stated the parliamentary document. In a separate development, the Offenders Compulsory Attendance (Amendment) Bill 2025 was also introduced. Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail explained that the bill expands the use of compulsory attendance orders for offenders facing up to 10 years' imprisonment, up from the current three-year limit. – Bernama
