Kuwait SC clinch 15th Handball Federation Cup
KUWAIT: In a thrilling end to the local handball season, Kuwait SC snatched a dramatic 30-29 victory over Qadsiya in the final of the 2024–2025 Kuwait Handball Federation Cup, claiming the title for the 15th time in its history — and for the 12th consecutive season.
The final showdown, held at Sheikh Saad Al-Abdullah Indoor Sports Hall, drew a packed crowd and delivered action from the very first seconds. Both teams came out strong, exchanging goals rapidly and matching each other's energy, leaving the first half deadlocked at 18-18.
The second half started off tight, with neither team able to break the silence for six full minutes — a testament to the intensity of the match. Qadsiya finally found the net, sparking a fresh wave of goals from both sides. But as the clock ticked down to the final second, Kuwait edged ahead by a single goal to seal the title.
'This win didn't come out of nowhere,' said Kuwait SC Chairman Khaled Al-Ghanim after the match. 'It's the result of strong teamwork that made our club a force on the local scene, consistently lifting trophies like today's Handball Federation Cup.'
He credited the club's ongoing success to the combined efforts of its players, staff, and fans, describing the supporters as 'the strongest and most important part of our journey.'
Al-Ghanim also thanked Minister of Information and Culture and Minister of State for Youth Affairs Abdulrahman Al-Mutairi for his support of Kuwaiti sports and for highlighting local achievements through media coverage. He also praised Qadsiya for their strong performance and sportsmanship.
In the third-place playoff, Salmiya defeated Kazma 34-28 in a fast-paced game. Salmiya led narrowly at halftime (15-13), and while Kazma mounted a comeback early in the second half, unforced errors saw them fall behind again, allowing Salmiya to secure the bronze.
As the curtain falls on the 2024–2025 handball season, national team manager Abdulaziz Al-Zaabi reflected on what he called one of the longest seasons in Kuwaiti handball history. 'The repeated pauses for international duties and other interruptions drained the competition's momentum,' he told KUNA. 'Players struggled with fitness and mental fatigue.'
Al-Zaabi pointed out that the league format also contributed to the issue. 'The competition essentially ended after the first phase of the Premier League, which made the rest of the season feel like a formality. The federation has taken note and plans changes next season.'
Looking ahead, he emphasized a renewed focus on developing local talent. 'Clubs are increasingly prioritizing youth players and giving them real playing time,' he said. 'This will give the national team more depth — especially with the upcoming Asian Championship, which Kuwait will host.' — KUNA

Falah rejoins Kuwait Club for the upcoming season
KUWAIT CITY, July 1: Kuwait Club has successfully re-acquired players Mohsen Falah and Mohammed Al-Rashed as part of its preparations for the upcoming 2025-2026 season. Both players are considered homegrown talents, and their return aligns with the club's strategy to reinforce the squad with promising and distinguished young players. Falah, a left-back, previously represented the Olympic and the national teams before an injury sidelined him. He later joined Al-Yarmouk Club on loan, and now Kuwait Club has brought him back ahead of the new season. Kuwait Club has been proactive in its preseason preparations, starting early by renewing the contract of Montenegrin coach Nebojsa Jovovic for a second term. Under Jovovic's leadership, the team clinched the Zain Premier League, Crown Prince Cup, and Super Cup titles, and reached the Amir Cup final — originally scheduled for June 16 but postponed due to regional circumstances. In addition to Falah and Al-Rashed, Kuwait Club renewed contracts with several local players, including Ahmed Al-Dhafiri, Mohammed Fareeh, Reda Hani, and Saud Al-Hoshan. The club also secured the signing of veteran goalkeeper Khaled Al-Rashidi, who has experience with Al-Qadsiya, Al-Arabi, and Al-Salmiya, and recently featured for the national team. Al-Salmiya Club is currently awaiting a response from coach Nasser Al-Shatti following an offer to lead the team for the next season. While most terms of the agreement have been agreed upon, the contract remains unsigned due to Al-Shatti's ongoing negotiations with Al-Arabi and Al-Salmiya's interest in securing his leadership for a third season. Negotiations between the parties have stalled without reaching a compromise. Meanwhile, Croatian coach Ante Miša remains under contract with Al-Salmiya through the end of next season. As part of its preparations for the new season, Al-Shabab has bolstered its roster by signing player Mohammed Khalil. Khalil, formerly part of Qadsiya's squad, faced a series of injuries that kept him out for extended periods. Returning to the Zain Premier League, Al-Shabab has also signed local talents including Yaqoub Al-Tararwah, Shaheen Al-Khamis, and Dhahi Al-Shammari. The technical staff is currently reviewing several foreign players' profiles with the aim of adding more signings before the season begins.

Al Hilal stuns Man City 4-3 in Club World Cup on Leonardo's extra-time goal
ORLANDO, Fla., July 1,(AP): Marcos Leonardo scored his second goal on a rebound in the 112th minute, and Al Hilal stunned Manchester City 4-3 on Monday night, eliminating the Premier League power from the Club World Cup in the round of 16. In a back-and-forth thriller at Camping World Stadium, the Saudi Arabian club took the lead three times, including twice in extra time. Kalidou Koulibaly put Al Hilal ahead 3-2 in the 94th minute, but Phil Foden, who entered as a substitute four minutes earlier, equalized in the 104th. Leonardo finally put Man City away. Goalkeeper Ederson saved a header by Sergej Milinkovic-Savic from inside the penalty box, and the ball deflected to Leonardo, who redirected it with his right foot as he fell to the pitch near the left post. Al Hilal moves on to face Fluminense of Brazil, which took down another European power, Inter Milan, earlier Tuesday. Leonardo also scored in the 46th minute to even the match at 1-1. Bernardo Silvan opened the scoring in the ninth minute for Man City. Malcom put Al Hilal ahead in the 52nd, and Erling Haaland found the net in the 55th to make it 2-2. Manchester City nearly won it in regulation in the final seconds of added time on a counterattack that was thwarted by a hard challenge. Referees did not call a penalty, and Man City coach Pep Guardiola ran onto the field to argue the decision after the whistle. Al Hilal will face Fluminense on July 4 at Camping World Stadium for a spot in the semifinals.
