Chief Minister M.K. Stalin virtually inaugurated from Chennai the scheme at Manickamangalam in Tiruvarur district. The scheme was announced in the Agriculture Budget for 2025-26.
Officials in the Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare and allied departments organised camps in the villages in the districts to assess the requirements of farmers and extend services to them. Farmers would be provided need-based inputs. The scheme camps would be held once every fortnight on the second and fourth Fridays in two villages each in every taluk. Sanitation workers given welfare assistance in Sivaganga

Through the Tamil Nadu Sanitation Workers Welfare Board nine sanitation workers were provided with ₹96,000 worth assistances during an event here on Friday. Thippampatti V. Aruchami, Chairman of the Tamil Nadu Sanitation Workers Welfare Board, said, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has ordered for allocation of ₹60 crore to the board. He made a point that unlike other departments, the unutilised funds from the board could not be diverted for any other purposes. 'The fund will be exclusively used for the welfare of the sanitation workers,' he added. Through the board, the workers have made requests to conduct grievance redressal meeting periodically and to increase the monthly wage to the workers, he noted. Also, Government Order 62, mandating minimum wages for National Urban Livelihood Mission (NULM) temporary sanitation workers, should be immediately implemented, said Mr. Aruchamy. Other requests like increasing the overseas education assistance up to ₹35 lakh for children of sanitation workers were made to the board, he noted. 'The board also instructed the workers to utilise the safety gears provided to them. They were also directed not to get into any manholes even when someone asks them to,' he added. He said, as per the district administration's plea, the board would work towards providing five robotic machines for manhole cleaning purposes. In the last four years in Sivaganga district alone, ₹6.4 lakh worth welfare assistances were provided to about 127 sanitation workers that included educational assistance, death compensation and safety gears, he said. District Collector K. Porkodi, Manamadurai MLA A. Tamilarasi Ravikumar, among others were present during the event.

Govt will safeguard farmers' interests in trade talks with US: Chouhan

The government will protect the interest of farmers in trade negotiations with the US, Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said on Friday. "We have said clearly the country's interest is top priority. Farmers' interest will be protected," Chouhan told reporters after inaugurating the Meghalaya Pineapple Festival. The agriculture and dairy sector will be protected. "We keep in mind the country's interest while taking any decisions," he noted. US President Donald Trump on Wednesday announced the imposition of a 25 per cent tariff on all goods coming from India starting August 1, plus an unspecified penalty for buying Russian crude oil and military equipment. New Delhi has never opened the dairy sector in any of its earlier signed free trade pacts. The agri sector is politically sensitive for India, as about 700 million rural livelihoods are dependent on it. Lowering duties would also pose a risk to national food security. On Thursday, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal -- in a suo motu statement in both the houses of Parliament -- had said India will take all necessary steps to safeguard and promote national interest. The government is examining the implications of these tariffs and is engaged with all stakeholders, including exporters and industry, for taking feedback on their assessment of the situation, he said. "The government attaches the utmost importance to protecting and promoting the welfare of our farmers, workers, entrepreneurs, exporters, MSMEs and all sections of industry. We will take all necessary steps to secure and advance our national interest," Goyal had said. The surprise announcement came amid a US trade team visiting India from August 25 for the sixth round of negotiations for the proposed bilateral trade agreement.

MDMK leader Vaiko rules out rift with DMK, reiterates firm opposition to BJP, Hindutva forces

CHENNAI: MDMK general secretary Vaiko on Friday dismissed speculation about his party snapping ties with the DMK and reiterated that his party will never have any association, even at any slightest level, with the BJP or its affiliates. Addressing the media after meeting Chief Minister M.K. Stalin at his residence to inquire about his health, he strongly refuted reports from sections of the media claiming that the MDMK might sever ties with the DMK. 'Such reports are baseless and fabricated,' he said. He asserted that his party will never compromise its stance in opposition to Hindutva forces. 'I have consistently criticised the BJP and the RSS in all my public meetings and will continue to do so. Under no circumstances will the MDMK have any form of relationship, even remotely, with these forces,' he said. He expressed confidence that the DMK-led alliance will secure a majority and return to power in 2026. 'There will be no coalition government in Tamil Nadu in 2026. Under the leadership of M K Stalin, the DMK alliance will win a clear mandate,' he said. On the caste-motivated murder of young software professional Kavin Selva Ganesh in Tirunelveli, Vaiko said, 'The police have taken swift action in the case. To prevent such honour killings, stringent laws must be enacted.' He said he conveyed his wishes to the CM for a speedy and full recovery. He lauded that the CM continued to discharge his official duties without any interruption even while being hospitalised last week.
