‘The Gilded Age': How The HBO Drama Created A Castle Fit For A New Duchess

Yahoo7 days ago
Gladys deserves the mother of all castles after the ordeal she went through in New York City. But production didn't need to go to England to find the perfect home for the new Duchess of Buckingham.
Two different estates in Newport, R.I. — along with one in Long Island — served as Sidmouth Castle in the episode titled 'A Different World.' To achieve the opening shot, however, director Deborah Kampmeier relied on an actual pond in England to project the image of Gladys (Taissa Farmiga) and Hector (Ben Lamb) riding a carriage through the estate grounds.

'We put the visual effect of the carriage in upside down in the water, and then the wide shot of it moving through the countryside. That's England,' said Kampmeier. 'And then as we approach the castle, that is an approach to an estate in Newport. We brought in background actors to converge upon the carriage, and then a big crane goes up and over. We actually built onto what was already there in our visual effects. That's one piece of the puzzle.'
The entrance and several of the castle rooms featured in the episode are from the Newport estates, while the sitting room and long hallways are from a mansion in Long Island. 'It is a collage that we use to create this epic castle feeling of a castle, using what we had available to us,' the director said. 'We've used up pretty much every mansion in Newport.'
While Gladys is certainly accustomed to living in a large house, her new one has to feel to feel different — and so much worse.
'It was important to feel like she's walking into a very cold, very epic space in which she feels isolated and alone,' said Kampmeier. 'We decided to keep it quite gray, to reflect both a feeling of England since we were not in England and to reflect a feeling of that location as well as the inner life of Gladys … just this gray, isolated, lost girl who's really like a fish out of water.'
Directing for The Gilded Age is 'an extravagant experience,' adds Kampmeier, who also helmed episode 2 and the upcoming episode 6.
'This is a show where it's very luxurious to be able to create a really epic shot that is going to stay in the final cut because the audience is asking for it rather than jumping right to a closeup,' said Kampmeier, whose other credits include Outer Range, Star Trek: Picard, FBI: International and Tales of the Walking Dead. 'I do love it.'

Prince William and Princess Charlotte Share a Sweet Moment Cheering on England's Lionesses to Euros Victory

When England failed to defend a goal against Spain, both William and Charlotte showed visible distress, with William leaning in to share some words with his daughter. They talked animatedly with their Spanish counterparts during the game, enjoying the light rivalry which kept spirits jovial. When the Lionesses sailed to victory, they hugged each other and jumped for joy. Princess William wore a dark suit and subtly patriotic tie, navy with thin red and white stripes. Taking a leaf out of her mother Catherine, Princess of Wales's style book (who, when together, will often share lovely mother-daughter dressing moments), Charlotte opted to re-wear a frill-shouldered, navy polka-dot dress from Guess, which the young royal wore to Wimbledon last year. Kate Middleton often delves into her own archive of elegant tea dresses and structured tailored looks. When she joined the rest of the British royals for the Order of the Garter service at Windsor Castle most recently, Kate pulled a Self-Portrait dress from her wardrobe that's proven to be quite a favorite. She'd worn the dress for both the 80th anniversary of VE Day and the Platinum Jubilee in 2022. It looks like she's passing that mindful sartorial sensibility down to Charlotte.

The very excited players from The University of Salford's Women's football team were also praying for an England win, screams of "3-1", "2-0", "1-0" and "England on penalties" were thrown at the M.E.N when we asked for predictions. Friends Alice Carr and Kallie Weaver were excited but very nervous, noting how impressive Spain had been in this tournament. "They keep the ball really well." Said Kallie. "I think we'll win in the end, I have faith in them." Added Alice. Viral England super fan Andy Milne was also there, and he was caught in two minds. 'I'm a bit nervous, we don't start games very well and Spain are very good. I'd say 1-0 England, but my real prediction is probably 4-0 Spain.' In the end, Andy needn't be so pessimistic, in what was a tense battle, Spain took the lead through Mariona Caldentey in the first half, and England equalised with a Alessio Russo header in the second half. With nothing to separate them in extra time, the game went to penalties, where super sub Chloe Kelly slotted in a historic penalty that saw England become European Champions. Freight Island erupted with delight, with cheers that seemed to go on for an eternity before they sang Sweet Caroline at the top of their lungs.

Kelly Osbourne posts treasured moment with late father Ozzy Osbourne

Kelly Osbourne is sharing some of her favorite memories with her dad, Ozzy Osbourne, as she continues to mourn his death. The 40-year-old reality star took to Instagram stories on Saturday morning to share a sweet moment between the two of them while filming his A&E show "Jack & Ozzy's World Detour," per Page Six. In the clip, Ozzy can be seen jumping into the passenger seat of Kelly's RV, as she tells him "Morning, I got this song in my head I have to play it for you." The two then begin to dance together as they both sing along to "Paradise" by George Ezra. Kelly can then be heard telling her dad, "I love you," to which he responds, "I love you more." "One of the best Ozzy moments ever!" she wrote above the video. The Prince of Darkness died on Tuesday at the age of 76, just weeks after reuniting with Black Sabbath for a final performance with the band in Birmingham, England. "It is with more sadness than mere words can convey that we have to report that our beloved Ozzy Osbourne has passed away this morning," the family said in a statement provided to Fox News Digital. "He was with his family and surrounded by love. We ask everyone to respect our family privacy at this time." Kelly first broke her silence after her father's death on Thursday, writing on Instagram stories, "I feel unhappy I am so sad. I lost the best friend I ever had." Following his death, a source told People magazine the rock legend was "surrounded by family" before he passed and was at "peace" in the moments before his death. "[Sharon's] deepest hope was fulfilled, and this is her focus now," a source told the outlet. "Ozzy's final days were spent in England, surrounded by family, music and in the place he called home. He was in peace." In addition to Kelly, Ozzy is also survived by his wife of 43 years, Sharon Osbourne, and their children, Aimée and Jack Osbourne, as well as his three children from a previous marriage, Jessica, Louis and Elliot. Jack's ex-wife, Lisa Stelly, also paid tribute to the Black Sabbath frontman on Instagram, sharing photos of him with his grandkids, writing in the caption, "The world got Ozzy. We got Papa." "One of one. Larger than life. It hurts to say goodbye, but what a gift it was to have him," she continued. "We will never stop missing you."
