I'm a 28-year-old AI engineer in Big Tech. Here's my advice for others who want to break into this growing field.
I was mostly raised in the small town of Bikaner, Rajasthan, in India, and I always thought I would study medicine until my cousin showed me a video that changed my life.
It was a Code.org video with Mark Zuckerberg, Bill Gates, and other tech rockstars, about how coding is the quickest way to convert an idea into a product. That video was a very big turning point in my life and career.
I'm now part of the Foundation Model main framework team for a major Big Tech company in the US. I recently completed five years with them, during which time I've held four different roles.
I used my master's to move to the US and further my career. But whether or not a higher degree is necessary today is complicated.
There are many roles on machine learning teams
There are multiple rungs on the ladder of Machine Learning teams.
The different roles include researchers, engineers calling on the machine learning models and building applications on top, and the core machine learning people who are developing the actual model itself. Finally, you have the infrastructure stack barrier, doing the product center toolkits to help machine learning teams.

I work on building the foundation of machine learning models, which means I build code that trains software to recognize unseen data and create patterns.
I started my tech career as an intern in India, but knew I had to come to the US to advance
I originally interned at my current company in India. I enjoyed working in India; the work was great, but the core business decisions and figuring out the strategy of the next project were happening at the company headquarters here in the US.
I had no intention of moving to the US earlier. I was quite happy in my country. But overall, I kept feeling like I wasn't doing the best I could in my career because of living so far from the core business decisions, and I decided I wanted to make the move.
I used my internship and master's to get further in AI engineering
I had two ways to go about moving to the US: one was to try to move from within my company, or get a master's. There were two reasons I chose the master's path: the knowledge and extra specialty you can develop through projects and the connections you make.
The biggest thing I took away from my master's program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison was definitely the people.
When I got to the US, I knew a few people at my former company already from my time in India, so I reached out to a bunch of managers directly instead of applying on the job board. I got the interview for the Machine Learning engineering internship quite easily because they were aware of me and my work from before.
Pitching my products internally helped me land a full-time AI engineering role
When I started as an intern again, this time in the US, I did a few things that helped me land this job. I pitched my product to other teams internally to get it adopted. My manager kept telling me that, when they were fighting to get me into the company full time, that was a major thing they used.
Now, as an engineer on the machine learning team, I like to segment my day into three parts. It sort of depends on the project life cycle, but usually, I start by researching. The second part is upstream and downstream check-ins with other team members and clients. I speak with people on other teams, saying, "Hey, this is what we can do, and does this work for you?"
Everyone's favorite part is the third, which is basically hands-on building and coding. I'm lucky enough to spend most of my time being an individual contributor and focusing on coding.
Higher education in tech still matters, but there are other ways
I think it's possible now to skip that education stage. But I have seen a bias in hiring for specific teams, and it's not unbreakable yet.
I was changing countries and cultures, and university was a great way to get through the immigration system and understand the culture. I needed it.
If you want to be in academia and teaching, the higher education path makes sense. But if you want to build something fast, learning and networking can be done in many places. In a city like San Francisco or New York, you could hustle and get the networking benefits of a university and a structured system.
You essentially just need the ability to prove that you can be good at the job. That doesn't really come from a degree. But I find there is usually some bias against applicants without a degree higher than a bachelor's.

Astronomer, a once little-known tech company, looked to the stars to turn a viral disaster into a marketing opportunity. The company was introduced to the world after a "kiss cam" at a Coldplay show caught its now-former CEO, Andy Byron, embracing its now-former head of human resources, Kristin Cabot, before the pair ducked for cover. The video ricocheted around the world, and the executives resigned days later. Astronomer then moved to shift the narrative, and it did so by working with two A-list Hollywood stars: Gwyneth Paltrow and Ryan Reynolds. Reynolds started the viral ad agency Maximum Effort in 2018. It has promoted the "Deadpool" movies, in which Reynolds also starred, and has made humorous ads for Mint Mobile, the NAACP, and others. Reynolds is the chief creative officer. It's not clear who reached out to whom first. Maximum Effort and Astronomer did not immediately respond to messages from Business Insider. The ad agency, however, confirmed on LinkedIn on Sunday that it was behind Astronomer's new ad, which featured Paltrow, poked fun at the controversy without ever mentioning it, and highlighted the company's work. The company's collaboration with Maximum Effort appears to have done just that. The commercial has been well-received, and some PR professionals told BI the company has fully succeeded in leveraging its accidental fame. "Creating a video clever enough, yet with just enough controversy, to spread online and capture mainstream media attention is generating millions of dollars of free, positive publicity for Astronomer," Kristi Piehl, founder and CEO of Media Minefield, told BI. She said Paltrow's script was "on message" and, importantly, focused on what Astronomer does, not what its former executives did. In the video, Paltrow is presented as a "temporary spokesperson" for the firm. She says the company has "gotten a lot of questions over the last few days" and wanted her to answer the "most common ones." But rather than share any new details about the now-infamous "kiss cam" moment, Paltrow promoted Astronomer's products. "If you want to talk crisis communications, this is a 2025 era playbook on how to do this the right way from a corporate standpoint," Sam Amsterdam, founder and managing partner at Amsterdam Group Public Relations, told BI. "They chose not to make this a crisis. This was a deliberate attempt at being pragmatic, at brand building, at brand defining," he said. Ryan McCormick, cofounder of Goldman McCormick PR, said the public is used to seeing corporate responses to crises that "miss their mark," but that wasn't the case this time. "Astronomer nailed it here, and I think public interest in them will only increase for the foreseeable future," he said. Having made it through to the other side of a viral controversy, the company appears ready to move on. In a LinkedIn post on Sunday, Astronomer's cofounder and new CEO, Pete DeJoy, thanked Maximum Effort for its "remarkable work." What content strategy looks like in the age of AI
There's an air of panic in the media world. The specter of AI has been looming large for a couple of years now, but the threat now appears to be solidifying. Publishers are reporting that search traffic is in free fall, and there's overwhelming evidence that AI chatbots give very little in terms of referrals. What to do about 'Google Zero' has gone from a theoretical destination to a reality that the media world must contend with. Of course, panicking is never a good strategy. But pivoting can be, and there's been no shortage of that lately. Both Wired and The Verge announced this week a stronger push into newsletters, one of the more reliable ways to connect directly with readers. When Business Insider recently announced layoffs, it also said it would invest in live events. And even publishers that already charge for subscriptions are doubling down on them: Newsweek will launch new types for both consumers and businesses, and The Guardian now has a new, cheaper tier for readers who want to opt out of personalized ads. While AI may be the impetus behind a lot of these changes, they're all directionally pushing toward building direct relationships with audience members. That is smart, but at a more basic level, they're appealing to human desires that go beyond just getting information—a task AI fulfills very effectively. Offerings like newsletters, memberships, and events give a sense of belonging, encourage reading habits through consistency, and emphasize voice—either that of the brand or the individual writer. Within all this is the beginnings of a post-Google content strategy for media. But really, it's only half a strategy because it only accounts for humans. Much of internet activity in the future will be the result of bots, whether they're hoovering up data to inform AI models or acting as agents on behalf of individual users. Data from TollBit indicates bot crawling is already comparable to what the big (non-AI) search engines do—when everyone has their own AI agent, I would wager it will be the majority. Any forward-looking content strategy needs to take into account both humans and machines. The new organic audience Let's start with the people. A few months ago, I hosted a webinar on the types of content that are most resilient to AI summarization. AI does a great job of summarizing news, but it struggles with voice and unique perspectives. The consequence: If you want good opinion and analysis, you'll need to click through. Visual and interactive content is poorly conveyed by AI. And because AI is well known to hallucinate sometimes, anything that might inform a crucial decision for a reader—like context for health, legal, or financial decisions—will likely motivate readers to check the original source. Certainly, memberships and subscriptions are important mechanisms to build a loyal audience, but they also need to be centered around something readers can't get anywhere else. That usually means narrowing the lens of focus rather than widening it. Niche subjects—even within a more general brand—will typically see higher engagement and more loyalty than general ones. Then there's the stickiness of interactivity. One thing that emerging media platforms like Substack and TikTok do well is encouraging direct conversation between content creators and audience members. But being interactive doesn't always have to be so hands-on: Semi-automated features like polls, quizzes, and games are all effective habit-builders—and cannot be substituted by AI. Rise of the machines If you think about it, there's a kind of a 'well, duh' quality to all the reports that confirm people don't click through to sources when they use AI. (Pew Research just put out another, by the way.) That's because removing the need to click is largely the point. Why go and read a whole bunch of articles when bots can do it for you? But that reveals the other side of the coin: Bots are now doing the searching and the clicking, and that activity is traceable, measurable, and potentially monetizable. In other words, the inevitable rise in bot traffic represents both an unprecedented threat and a massive opportunity. First, there's the obvious idea of charging bots to scrape your site. Putting in paywalled endpoints—where AI bot operators pay a small fee to access content—may work, especially now that Cloudflare is leading the charge in empowering website owners to block bots. However, it greatly depends on the scrapers acting in good faith—and even if they do, it's doubtful if the fee per scrape that publishers charge would ever be enough to build a sustainable business. What could help is winning the next SEO war: AIEO, or artificial intelligence engine optimization. Being one of the primary sources in an AI Overview or a ChatGPT answer might not seem like much of a prize, given the low click-through rates. But if you pair it with both a pay-per-crawl mechanism and a content strategy that focuses on the AI-resilient content types discussed earlier—the ones that have a higher chance of audiences seeking them out—the benefits could end up being more than mere bragging rights. This kind of AI-first content strategy does require a more sophisticated approach. You'd have to make use of the full search and AI toolbox, including things like Google snippets to ensure AI crawlers highlight the most enticing parts of your content without giving the store away, and MCP servers that can ensure bots have direct access to the content you green-light for them. While that can be technically cumbersome, the market is already adapting, with AIEO specialists like Scrunch AI offering one-stop-shop packages that essentially make a bot-friendly copy of your website so that crawlers can feast while humans enjoy your regular site. Smaller, better . . . robot-ier? The truth about the future of media is that the audience, the human audience, will be smaller for pretty much everyone. As more people get their information from AI portals, publishers will need to make the most of the few people who come directly to them. That isn't necessarily a bad thing. Going small can ultimately be part of a healthier brand of journalism, as I argued in my very first column. But the parallel trend is that the bot audience is rising fast, and it undoubtedly will be a dominant force in the way information is distributed. Harnessing that force will be essential for the media. And though there are still a lot of unknowns—the best practices, the legal framework, even the potential rewards—at least it's easy to see what not to do: wait.
