SEA urges CCPA, FSSAI to take action against misleading social media claims on refined oils
In a letter written to CCPA and FSSAI, SEA said a viral video posted by the Instagram account @satvicmovement has been making "alarming and factually incorrect claims" about refined edible oils, labelling them as "chemical-laden" and "toxic".
"The video has gained widespread traction, creating confusion among consumers and casting unfounded doubts on the safety of refined edible oils, which form the majority of India's edible oil consumption," SEA said in a statement.
The association warned that such misinformation threatens not only consumer confidence but also the livelihoods of farmers and the credibility of India's food safety ecosystem. It stressed the need to provide accurate, science-backed information to the public.
To counter the viral video, the industry body has released a comprehensive explanatory note to clarify the scientific and regulatory realities of edible oil refining with evidence-based facts.
SEA pointed out that about 85 per cent of India's edible oil consumption comes from refined oils such as palm, soybean, sunflower, rice bran, and cottonseed. These oils are processed under strict Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) norms and meet globally accepted Codex Alimentarius standards.
The association defended the use of food-grade hexane, saying it is safe and regulated. Hexane is a food-grade solvent commonly used in oil extraction and is removed during processing, with final products meeting the FSSAI-prescribed limit of 5 ppm, which is within safe toxicological thresholds recognised globally.
SEA also emphasised that refining is a scientifically necessary and approved process, essential to remove natural impurities and ensure safety, stability, and shelf life of edible oils. It said FSSAI regulations are strictly complied with for processes such as deodorisation.
"Alarmist messages like those in the viral video pose broader risks to the agri-economy, potentially discouraging consumers, affecting oilseed farming, and damaging trust in a heavily regulated industry," the association said.

Last Updated: New Delhi, Aug 5 (PTI) The Delhi High Court on Tuesday formed a committee of experts to evaluate whether a girl diagnosed with autism can be admitted in a private school in the capital or she needs a school for children with special needs. A bench of Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela passed the order on an appeal filed by GD Goenka Public School against an order directing it to admit the child in Class 1, or in an age-appropriate class, as a fee-paying student. 'To allay apprehension in the mind of the appellant we propose constitution of a committee of experts, along with her mother and school counsellor, to evaluate the girl and give its opinion as to whether she can be admitted in G D Goenka or a school of children with special needs," the bench said. The bench also directed the doctor concerned to examine the child to conduct any study that was required to come to the conclusion. The court was hearing appeal against a July 1 order of a single judge of the high court, saying 'inclusive education" was about belongingness, recognising that every child had a place in the classroom not because they were the same, but because they were different, as the difference enriches the learning environment for all. The petition before the single judge bench claimed the child was born in May 2017, and in November 2019, a doctor suspected her to be suffering from autism and started her therapy, which was interrupted by Covid-19. The child was admitted to the school in academic session 2021-22 under the 'sibling clause" and her parents informed the institution about the speech delay in the admission forms. In December 2021, the child was diagnosed with mild autism and was recommended various therapies. When the offline classes resumed in April 2022 after the Covid-19, the parents submitted the diagnosis to the school and requested support in the form of a shadow teacher, or allowing 'special educator" to assist her in the classroom, the petition said. Due to constant pressure and lack of support from the school, education of the petitioner was stated to have been discontinued from January 2023. The court said the child should be permitted to attend school with the assistance of a parent-appointed shadow teacher, subject to the school's basic norms of decorum and safety. It further directed the Directorate of Education to monitor the reintegration of the child and ensure the school provides an inclusive and non-discriminatory environment. Karnataka's Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao has urged the public to remain vigilant about food safety and avoid being misled by visually appealing but potentially harmful dishes. Addressing the media on Monday, Rao highlighted the need for consumers to prioritise quality over appearance. This appeal comes especially in the wake of recent food safety concerns involving the use of banned synthetic colouring. The minister cited the recent testing of food samples from the Empire Group of Restaurants. Six items were deemed unsafe after testing since they were found to contain synthetic colouring. About The Food Safety Violations At Bengaluru's Empire Restaurant Empire, a famous restaurant chain in Bengaluru, made headlines when a lab report revealed that some of its food items were unsafe for human consumption. The results dated July 11 from the State Food Laboratory, Public Health Institute, pertained to chicken kebabs served at its Gandhinagar outlet. A food safety officer had collected two kilos of chicken kebab samples from the establishment on June 27. It was discovered that they did not meet the required food safety standards. After a notice was issued to the restaurant, Empire said that they stopped using food colouring in their kebabs. The restaurant later released a detailed public statement about the same. It clarified, "Recently, the FSSAI flagged the use of a synthetic colour (Sunset Yellow FCF) in our kebab marinade. While this colour is an FSSAI-licensed, commercially available product that has previously seen widespread use across the industry, we were served a notice and we fully complied. Its use has now been completely discontinued." The restaurant added, "We have now given our signature dishes a fresh, natural look-the same Empire taste and the same quality, with zero compromise." He noted that better quality food and drugs can become the norm only if people insist on quality goods, as per PTI. "The government needs to do its part and tackle this legally, but people, too, should cultivate quality consciousness as culture," he said. As part of broader food safety initiatives, the minister said that the health department also held a virtual meeting with cooking oil manufacturers to enforce trans-fat limits. Ministry of Ayush releases list of Ayurvedic food preparations under category of ‘Ayurveda Aahara'
Aimed at providing credible reference for the manufacture of Ayurveda Aahara products, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) in consultation with the Ministry of Ayush, has released a list of Ayurvedic food preparations under the category of 'Ayurveda Aahara'. Ayurveda Aahara refers to food products developed in line with the holistic dietary principles of Ayurveda. These preparations emphasise balance, seasonal suitability, and using natural ingredients and herbs known for their therapeutic benefits. With rising public interest in preventive health and sustainable living, Ayurveda Aahara is increasingly recognised as a trusted nutritional choice that harmonises tradition with modern dietary habits, noted a release issued by the Ministry. Going mainstream 'This move will bring India's traditional food wisdom into the mainstream, following the introduction of the Food Safety and Standards (Ayurveda Aahara) Regulations in 2022. These regulations recognise foods based on recipes, ingredients, and processes from authoritative Ayurvedic texts, and the new list brings unprecedented clarity and confidence to consumers and businesses alike,' explained an Ayush Ministry official adding that the list, issued under Note (1) of Schedule B of the regulations, draws directly from classical Ayurvedic texts listed in Schedule A.
