FIFA oddly abandoned anti-racism messaging for the Club World Cup
Anyone who has watched an international soccer game in the past decade has will know that FIFA'a anti-racism campaign plays a prominent visible role. There are "Say No To Racism" patches on the jersey sleeves and on the captain's armband. The same message appears on the field-side digital banners frequently throughout a game.
But for the inaugural expanded Club World Cup in the U.S., the anti-discrimination messaging has been completely absent. It's been absent to a point that it had to be a deliberate choice to leave the "Say No To Racism" campaign out of the stateside tournament.
The reason for that? FIFA hasn't been willing answer. But The Athletic did directly ask FIFA if the absence of the campaign had to do with a U.S. government that vocally opposes inclusivity and diversity, but FIFA didn't respond.
Oddly enough, FIFA did reportedly work on an anti-racism campaign for the Club World Cup but has opted to not display any of it in the tournament thus far.
In a statement, FIFA affirmed it remains against racism but didn't explain why the campaign has disappeared for these matches in the U.S. Via The Athletic:
'FIFA has a firm, zero-tolerance stance against all forms of discrimination and racism. This commitment was recently reinforced through the unanimous approval by the FIFA Council of the revised FIFA Disciplinary Code, which introduces new measures to fight racist abuse — including increased minimum bans for racist incidents and enhanced financial penalties as duly informed to the 75th FIFA Congress in Asuncion in May 2025.'
It's yet another major mistake that FIFA has made with the Club World Cup.

Newcastle move for Ramsdale after Trafford setback
Newcastle United are working on a deal to sign Southampton goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, according to Sky Sports. The Magpies are eager to strengthen their options in goal and have made a formal offer to Southampton. According to The Athletic, the proposal is for a loan move with an option to buy Ramsdale permanently. Talks between the two clubs remain ongoing, but no deal has been agreed upon at this stage. Newcastle seek new goalkeeper after Trafford blow Newcastle have been active in the market this summer as they search for a new first-choice goalkeeper. They had been chasing James Trafford, but that move now looks unlikely. The Burnley keeper is expected to rejoin Manchester City. Newcastle had hoped to secure Trafford earlier in the summer before the Club World Cup, but City were not open to a deal at the time. With that move now off the table, Ramsdale has emerged as a serious alternative. Southampton are open to various types of deals. These include a full transfer, a loan with a sizeable fee and future option, or keeping the player at the club. Ramsdale joined Southampton from Arsenal in a £25 million transfer last summer. He is under contract at the club until 2029. The 27-year-old made 32 appearances for Southampton last season in all competitions. He kept just three clean sheets as the club finished bottom of the Premier League. That campaign marked Ramsdale's third top-flight relegation. Despite this, he remains highly regarded and has senior England experience. Ramsdale previously played under Newcastle manager Eddie Howe during their time together at Bournemouth, from 2017 to 2020. Before joining Southampton, Ramsdale spent three years at Arsenal. He was the club's starting goalkeeper as they finished second in the 2022-23 Premier League season. However, he lost his spot to David Raya the following year and featured mostly in cup competitions. A possible reunion with Howe could offer him a new start at St James' Park.

MLB Trade Rumors Roundup: Latest on Mets, Cubs, Astros, Dodgers and More
The MLB trade deadline is on Thursday at 6:00 PM ET and we've already seen several playoff contenders strike big deals in order to make a postseason run. The hot stove is burning, with the latest MLB trade rumors shedding light on what's going on around the league. Today, we're taking a look at some of the latest MLB rumors for buyers and some sellers across baseball. New York Mets' Starling Marte drawing trade interest The New York Mets are buyers at the MLB trade deadline, having already demonstrated that with the Gregory Soto trade. However, that hasn't stopped rival clubs from inquiring about outfielder Starling Marte, per Mike Puma of the New York Post. Marte, age 36, is in a contract year with a $20.75 million salary this season. Not only has he been a very productive hitter in the Mets lineup this season (.788 OPS), but he's also beloved in the clubhouse. Unless moving Marte helps the Mets shed payroll to take on another big salary, while also addressing an area of need, it seems unlikely that Marte will be moved. Related: Minnesota Twins' standout relievers viewed as 'gettable' High-end relievers are some of the most coveted assets at the MLB trade deadline since every contender would love to strengthen its bullpen. The Minnesota Twins recognize that, which is why they've listened to inquiries on Jhoan Duran, Griffin Jax, and Brock Stewart. What's notable is that a deal involving one of these pitchers is viewed as possible. Aaron Gleeman of The Athletic reports that teams believe 'one or more' of the trio is 'gettable.' Duran is the crown jewel (1.86 ERA), but Jax and Stewart (2.45 ERA) are also highly sought after. Related: Chicago Cubs targeting MacKenzie Gore The Chicago Cubs have already been linked to several starting pitchers in MLB trade rumors, and it now appears an even bigger name is on their radar. Patrick Mooney and Sahadev Sharma of The Athletic report that Chicago is 'very interested' in Washington Nationals starter MacKenzie Gore. While the Nationals are reportedly 'reluctant' to move their 26-year-old ace, especially following his first All-Star selection, the Cubs are monitoring the situation closely. The left-hander has excelled this season with a 3.52 ERA and a 29.3 percent strikeout rate. Gore is under team control through 2027 (arbitration-eligible), and acquiring him would likely cost the Cubs multiple top prospects, with the Nationals asking for a 'sky-high' return. Related: Houston Astros explored Eugenio Suarez trade, likes Willi Castro Adding a left-handed hitter has been one of the Houston Astros' top priorities in the weeks leading up to the MLB trade deadline. Now, following the long-term injury suffered by Isaac Paredes (hamstring), the club also needs to find a third baseman. Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports that the Astros have checked in on Arizona Diamondbacks third baseman Eugenio Suarez (.898 OPS). Houston also reportedly has interest in Twins' infielder Willi Castro (.769 OPS), a switch-hitter who can play second, shortstop, third base and the corner outfield. Related: Los Angeles Dodgers eyeing outfielders, interested in 2 targets While the Los Angeles Dodgers bullpen is a glaring weakness right now, it's not the only position they'd like to address at the MLB trade deadline. Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reported that Los Angeles is in the market for an outfielder. More specifically, per Bob Nightengale of USA Today, the Dodgers are interested in Twins outfielder Harrison Bader and St. Louis Cardinals' utility man Brendan Donovan. Bader, a former Gold Glove Award winner, ranks in the 86th percentile of Baseball Savant's Fielding Run Value, and he's in the 93rd percentile for Outs Above Average (five). Donovan, a Gold Glove winner (2022) and recent All-Star selection, has a .780 OPS this season and could play second base or left field for Los Angeles. Related: Odds of Sandy Alcantara trade increasing Sandy Alcantara's up-and-down season in his first year back from Tommy John surgery has complicated his trade value. Fortunately for the Miami Marlins, it appears Alcantara's recent start helped a lot. The 29-year-old righty allowed one unearned run over seven innings against the San Diego Padres on July 23. It helped teams envision what he could look like if they get the former Cy Young Award winner back on track. Now, according to USA Today's Bob Nightengale, Alcantara's trade stock is on the rise, and teams are 'convinced' he'll be moved ahead of Thursday's MLB trade deadline. Related: Arizona Diamondbacks willing to move both top starters A few weeks ago, the Diamondbacks' front office seemed a bit undecided on whether they would operate as sellers at the deadline. Now, it appears the organization has the green light to offload a lot of talent. Suárez is expected to be moved this week, becoming the second key hitter in the Diamondbacks' lineup to be dealt. Furthermore, per Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, Arizona is willing to move both Merrill Kelly and Zac Gallen. Both starters are free agents this winter, and while one was always expected to be traded, it now seems possible that both could be pitching for new teams. Related: New York Mets eyeing pair of center fielders While Tyrone Taylor has been great defensively for the Mets this season, he's essentially become the equivalent of an automatic out (.298 OBP) at the plate. So, New York is scouring the trade market for potential replacements in center field. Jesse Rogers of ESPN reported that the Mets are interested in Baltimore Orioles' center fielder Cedric Mullins and Chicago White Sox outfielder Luis Robert. Mullins, a free agent this winter, is likely to be dealt this week. However, there's growing uncertainty about Robert being dealt. Texas Rangers now prepared to buy at MLB trade deadline Coming into July, the Texas Rangers were three games below .500 and 3.5 games back of the final wild card spot in the American League. Selling at the deadline seemed to be a legitimate possibility. A lot can change in a few weeks. Specifically, Texas posting the second-best record (15-6) in baseball this month. Entering play on Monday, the Rangers are tied with the Seattle Mariners for the third WC spot. As a result, per Buster Olney of ESPN, the Rangers are expected to be aggressive buyers. Fantasy baseball cheat sheet: Add Drew Rasmussen, Agustín Ramírez and more THE BAT X insights
The MLB trade deadline is quickly approaching, so competitive teams are buying while down-and-out teams are selling — and fantasy rosters are shuffling. Knowing who to start, sit, fade and trade can be challenging. Using Derek Carty's THE BAT X projection system, The Athletic has developed a weekly rundown to inform fantasy managers about the road ahead. Advertisement THE BAT X has been the most accurate original projection system in fantasy for five consecutive years and provides estimates based on a wide range of metrics, including Statcast metrics like exit velocity and barrels, as well as ballpark effects, weather conditions, matchups and much more. Another important concept to understand is regression to the mean, which means players performing above their typical level of play are likely to decline, while those underperforming are likely to improve. This week, THE BAT X has Tampa Bay's righty Drew Rasmussen as the top waiver-wire (pitchers) target. Not only is he 7-5 with a 2.93 ERA, but he gets two starts this week and is ranked 10th among two-start pitchers. His Statcast metrics are mixed: He's not walking batters often, keeping barrels down and forcing ground balls, but is giving up hard hits and 21.9 Whiff% (25th percentile). If you're looking for a reliever, THE BAT X thinks Washington's bullpen could have a combined ERA under 4.00. Lefty Jose A. Ferrer is widely available and has 18 holds on the season in 51.2 innings pitched. While his ERA is 4.88, his xERA is 3.48, and Ferrer forces ground balls, doesn't walk many batters and limits hard hits. He relies primarily on his sinker, mixing in changeups and sliders. Royals' top prospect Jac Caglianone hasn't lived up to expectations or his expected stats, with a .197 wOBA but a .317 xwOBA; however, he was placed on the 10-day IL, so it's not the time to start believing in him (unless you have an open IL spot and patience). Atop the hitters to fade list, Isaac Paredes suffered a more severe right hamstring injury than initially anticipated. If you need a corner infielder to replace him, Miami's Agustín Ramírez (C, 1B) could be a good fit. Second on the waiver targets list, Ramírez has 15 home runs and a .356 xwOBA, .283 xBA, and .513 xSLG. He needs to improve on plate discipline, but the power is there. Advertisement And there's more … so much more. Remember, projections can't always predict breakout seasons, so while Cal Raleigh is on the fade list, the expected regression based on past performance may impact his station there. He's not a fade. With Aaron Judge's injury news, Raleigh could take home AL MVP honors this year. THE BAT X is a highly accurate system, but it's still a model that can't predict everything. Projections are based on a 12-team, mixed-league roto format with 23-player rosters. For a more thorough explanation of THE BAT X, read Carty's explainer. For first-time readers, we compare players' year-to-date value (value to this point in the season) against their projected rest-of-season value (value for the remainder of the season and not including YTD value). Values are expressed as dollars, and $0 represents a starting caliber player in the aforementioned 12-team mixed roto league format. This gives you an idea of which players may be available on your waiver wire, their value for the remainder of the year, and why you should grab them before anyone else can. But because this is a model, you'll want to use the projections alongside knowledge of your league. Like the waiver wire, fades are determined based on the year-to-date roster value compared to THE BAT X's projected rest-of-season value. Many talented players, who you could very well hold based on roster construction, are on this list. However, the point is that their success is projected to drop off; due to their YTD performance, they could be valuable trade bait and get you a higher return than their worth for the remainder of the season. Trade targets are similar to the waiver wire and fades, determined by current roster value versus THE BAT X's projected rest-of-season value. The projections indicate that you might want these players on your roster for the rest of the season. You can even compare this list to the 'Fade or Trade' list above to see if there are deals to be made. The names on this list are well-known, but these players haven't yet lived up to their previous or expected success, meaning you may be able to acquire a player on the come-up for a good value. Here are hitters with favorable pitching matchups this week. The 'Fantasy $Value' indicates a player's value in the matchup listed, while the 'Underlying $Value' refers to the skill level or expected performance of the player based on THE BAT X's advanced metrics and context-neutral data outside of the specific matchup listed. It's the player's value without external conditions like ballpark, the opponent, weather and their position in the lineup. It helps to separate a player's raw core ability from the value in a given matchup. Here's a look at hitters who have been over- and underperforming using weighted on-base percentage (wOBA) and expected weighted on-base percentage (xwOBA). Batters with an xwOBA lower than their actual wOBA could fall to numbers closer to expected, while hitters with lower wOBAs could surge as the season continues. This list includes players who have overperformed in the past 30 days, according to wOBA and xwOBA. The players on this list are the top underperformers in the past 30 days based on wOBA and xwOBA. Some of that underperformance can be chalked up to luck, and they're likely to rebound to numbers closer to their xwOBA. Finally, we get to the top-scoring offenses of the week. Based on matchups, these five teams are projected to score the most runs this week, meaning the individual players on each team could have fantasy values that exceed their underlying values. This list could help you identify streamers or make tough decisions in weekly lineups. The top one-start pitchers list is limited to players rostered at 50% or less. Because these players are more available, you may find a streamer worthy of a start in a competitive league if you need help in pitching categories. Otherwise, the list can aid in making tough roster calls. Two-start pitchers for the week are ranked based on THE BAT X's projection system, and the list excludes those with a projected negative value. Two-start pitchers are valuable in weekly lineups, and these projections can help you find a plug-and-play option. The projected stats can also help you decide who to start, who to bench and who to replace. The pitchers on the following list may be aces or above average, but they are projected to be in tough matchups that could hurt category stats or points in daily and weekly lineups. Based on matchups, the following bullpens are ripe with relievers to stream this week. If you have RP spots to fill or improve, this is the list for you.
