Pinch-hitter Dominic Smith delivers RBI single in the 10th, lifts Giants to 4-3 win over the Mets
NEW YORK (AP) — Pinch-hitter Dominic Smith hit a tiebreaking RBI single against his former team in the 10th inning leading the San Francisco Giants to a 4-3 win over the New York Mets on Friday night.
The victory snapped a six-game losing streak for the Giants, who dealt relievers Tyler Rogers and Camilo Doval, as well as outfielder Mike Yastrzemski, prior to Thursday's trade deadline.
The Mets overcame a 3-0 deficit to force extra innings before losing their fourth straight game and falling out of first place in the National League East. New York is a half-game behind Philadelphia.
Casey Schmitt and Patrick Bailey each had an RBI double and Jung Hoo Lee added a run-scoring groundout before Pete Alonso began the Mets' comeback with a homer in the seventh — the 249th of his career. Alonso is within three homers of Darryl Strawberry, who holds the franchise record at 252.
The Mets tied the game in the eighth when Juan Soto had an RBI single and Alonso lofted a sacrifice fly.
But, Ryan Walker (3-4) retired New York in order in the ninth and Smith, who spent the first six seasons of his career with the Mets, singled home automatic runner Willy Adames with one out in the 10th.
Randy Rodriguez worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the 10th by striking our Ronny Maurcio to earn his second save.

Francisco Lindor, who singled before Soto's RBI single, and Alonso had hits in the same game for just the 10th time in 42 games, dating to June 12. The two are batting a combined .191 (62-for-325) in that span. Up next

Aaron Judge will rejoin the Yankees on Tuesday after IL stint
ARLINGTON, Texas — Aaron Judge will be activated by the New York Yankees when their captain is eligible to come off the 10-day injured list after being sidelined because of a flexor strain in his right elbow. Maybe the two-time AL MVP slugger can help get them back on track. Manager Aaron Boone said after New York's fourth consecutive loss, 8-5 to the Texas Rangers in 10 innings, that Judge will be available for the middle game of the three-game series. 'Judge tomorrow,' Boone said, without elaborating when asked about his return. While Boone didn't reveal then what the specific plans were, he had said before the game that Judge would be the designated hitter when he first returned to the lineup. He said the outfielder could also play catch while in Texas, which will help determine when he could return to playing in the field. After hitting off Yankees minor league pitchers at the team's complex in Tampa for the second day in a row, Judge traveled to Texas and was there for the series opener. He didn't speak to reporters in the clubhouse after the game. Judge hasn't played since July 25 because of the elbow strain. An MRI showed no acute damage to his ulnar collateral ligament and he had a platelet-rich injection July 27, when he was placed on the IL in a move retroactive to the previous day. His .342 batting average was still the best in the majors. He was fourth with 37 homers and fifth with 85 RBIs. New York will have an open spot on its active roster because Boone said newly acquired outfielder Austin Slater was headed to the IL. Slater, acquired from the Chicago White Sox, exited in the second inning because of left hamstring tightness after running out a fielder's choice grounder. Giancarlo Stanton has been the Yankees' starting DH for all of his 32 games this season, including the opener against the Rangers when his 10th homer was a two-run shot in the fourth that put the Yankees up 5-4. He missed the first 70 games of the season with inflammation in the tendons of both elbows, and Boone said he wouldn't play the outfield in Texas if Judge does DH during the series. The first time Judge said he felt pain in the elbow was July 22 at Toronto, after he made a strong throw home when George Springer singled to right. An inning later, Judge winced after catching a fly in the right-field corner and throwing to second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. Judge was caught by a YES Network camera clenching his right hand in a fist. The Yankees arrived in Texas after being swept in a three-game series at Miami and falling to third place in the AL East behind Toronto and Boston. They were in first place to start July, but are now 5 1/2 games behind the division-leading Blue Jays, and currently in a wild-card spot 2 1/2 games behind the Red Sox with 49 left in the regular season. When asked if the current stretch, which includes an 18-28 record since June 13, was weighing on his team, Boone said he felt that it was. 'Doesn't matter,' Boone said. 'Nobody cares how stressful it is, or that's all just noise, excuses, whatever. We've got to play better, and we've got to win, and we know that.'

Smith has now delivered another banger of a one-liner about his new team, that being the Las Vegas Raiders. "I believe that the game gets settled between the white lines on game day. From my vantage point, we got a really, really good team. I don't know if we'll shock anyone inside of this building, but maybe shock some outsiders. But it's good. Let 'em sleep. I don't want them to see us coming. We're just working in the shadows right now, getting our game right and when it's time to go under those bright lights, I think we'll be ready," Smith said in an appearance on NFL Network on Monday. Smith was an essential element to a pivotal offseason for the Raiders, which also saw them hire a new general manager in John Spytek and a new head coach in former Seahawks coach Pete Carroll. Later acquiring Smith from Seattle for a third-round draft pick, Las Vegas reunited Carroll with his former quarterback. Smith and the Raiders later agreed to a two-year, $75 million extension. Last season (2024), Smith totaled 4,320 passing yards, 21 passing touchdowns, 15 interceptions and a 93.2 passer rating, while completing 70.4% of his passes. He also rushed for 272 yards and two touchdowns. Smith ranked 12th among quarterbacks with an 83.1 overall grade, according to Pro Football Focus. ADVERTISEMENT Across his three years as Seattle's starting quarterback (2022-24), Smith averaged 4,075.3 passing yards, 23.7 passing touchdowns, 11.7 interceptions and a 95.5 passer rating per season, while completing 68.5% of his passes. He was a Pro Bowler in each of the first two seasons, with Carroll and the Seahawks parting ways after the 2023 season. Smith had previously backed up Russell Wilson from 2019-21, which was preceded by a four-year stint with the New York Jets (2013-16) and one-year stints with the New York Giants (2017) and Los Angeles Chargers (2018). As for the perceived doubt surrounding the Raiders' 2025 prospects, their division (AFC West) includes three teams that made the playoffs last season; the Kansas City Chiefs have won three of the past six Super Bowls and won the AFC in five of the past six seasons, including in 2024, while the Chargers and Denver Broncos each won double-digit games and earned a wild-card berth last season. The Raiders finished 4-13. As for the rest of the Raiders' offseason, they selected Boise State running back and 2024 Heisman Trophy runner-up Ashton Jeanty with the No. 6 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, while adding safety Jeremy Chinn, defensive end Malcolm Koonce, linebacker Elandon Roberts and running back Raheem Mostert, among other signings.
