Man jailed for torture of woman punished for posting video of himself in prison
The Irish Mirror can reveal Sean Conroy – described by a judge as a 'main mover' in the shocking attack by a gang on defenceless Natalie Ennis – posted a bizarre clip from inside Dublin's Mountjoy Prison three weeks ago.
That was after he had pleaded guilty to the assault in central Dublin last September– for which he was handed a 12-year sentence on Wednesday.
The Dubliner posted the video on social media around July 9 after filming it on a mobile phone.
That's despite it being a criminal offence for a prisoner to use a device behind bars. The video shows what appears to be a large amount of cannabis
In the video, Conroy, 21, of Sillogue Road, Ballymun, North Dublin, films himself making a bacon and sausage bap on a grill – and tells his online audience 'Work hard, stay humble'.
He pans the camera to a TV showing GAA and then to the door of his cell – which he opens to show a prison landing.
Dopey Conroy even added a cell-block selfie to the video – with the subtitle 'Mountjoy Prison'.
The video also shows what appears to be a large amount of cannabis.
And at one stage, Conroy films himself smoking a hand-rolled cigarette while he and a cellmate watch a game in the FIFA Club World Cup competition, which was held in the United States.
But prison bosses soon became aware of the footage – and promptly raided his cell.
It's understood officers seized a number of items, including a phone and SIM card. Conroy's fry-up
He was then hit with a so-called P19, a prison disciplinary notice that usually means a loss of privileges.
A spokesman for the Irish Prison Service would not discuss Conroy's case with the Irish Sunday Mirror.
He said: 'The Irish Prison Service does not comment on matters relating to the operations or security of our prisons.'
Conroy was one of five men caged on Wednesday for the attack on Ms Ennis, which shocked the nation when details emerged at their sentencing hearing.
They beat, tortured and held her captive for three hours in a Dublin flat over a false accusation about missing drugs. Ms Ennis was beaten to the head and body with metal pole, burned with a makeshift blowtorch and a heated hammer head. She was also cut with a knife, kicked and punched, had her hair cut off and was threatened with rape.
Dublin Circuit Criminal Court heard the men took running jumps at her during the assault in a one-bedroom flat at Henrietta House, Dublin 7.
They threatened to make her drink ammonia and also threatened to rape her teenage daughter. Natalie Ennis was abducted and tortured because of a row over missing drugs which she knew nothing about. Prosecutor Caroline Cummings told an earlier sentence hearing that Ms Ennis was terrified throughout the horrific thought she was going to die.
The assault only ended when gardai entered the flat with a search warrant, the court heard.
Five of the eight men present that day entered guilty pleas, while another man and a juvenile are still before the courts. The eighth person is not before the courts.
Conroy, along with Mark Keogh, 33, Mark McMahon, 55, and Braxton Rice, 21, all of Henrietta House, Henrietta Place, Dublin 7, and Kian Walshe, 22, of Constitution Hill, Dublin 7, all pleaded guilty to false imprisonment and assault causing harm Ms Ennis at Henrietta House.
A number of other counts against each man relating to the production of articles in the course of an offence, were taken into consideration.
Judge Pauline Codd commended the gardai for their intervention, the thoroughness of their investigation and the empathy shown to Ms Ennis.
She also noted but for the intervention of the gardai, the men could be facing more serious charges. Braxton Rice
Judge Codd said the harm caused to Ms Ennis was the 'most serious type' within the range of the charge of assault causing harm.
She added Rice was the 'main ringleader' who acted as 'inquisitor' in relation to the missing drugs, made 'vicious threats' and heated implements which were used to burn the victim.
She said Rice's level of culpability was within the 'exceptional level' for the offence of false imprisonment, and he used 'sadistic torture and threats' against the 'defenceless woman'.
Judge Codd handed Rice a sentence of 15 years, with the final 12 months suspended on strict conditions.
She said Conroy was 'centrally involved' and imposed a sentence of 13 years, with the final 12 months suspended on strict conditions.
Handing down McMahon a sentence of 12 years, Judge Codd noted he allowed his flat to be used, 'facilitated and actively took part' in the offending, but was not the 'main mover'.
She noted he expressed shame that he was involved in an offence involving violence against women.
McMahon's son, Keogh, was jailed for nine years for his involvement in the brutal assault. Mark Keogh
Judge Codd said Walshe's car was used to transport the victim to the flat and that he shared a recording of the attack, which demonstrated a 'lack of empathy and moral compass'.
She handed him a sentence of 11 years with the final two-and-a-half years suspended on strict conditions .
Conroy has 89 previous convictions including drug dealing and possession, burglary and possession of knives.
Speaking to RTE Radio One on Thursday, Ms Ennis recounted the full horror of the attack.
She said: 'They were coming behind the doors and whacking me with steel poles, batons, hatchets. I got a hatchet into the head as well. Then they were coming at speed, running, doing flying kicks and hitting me.

'That's how I lost my teeth. I've a good few missing teeth.
'They were standing on my face as well while they got me on the floor, standing all over my body.
'I had to get a disc removed from my back and all and some of my spine bone carved, and then I had a blow out elbow as well from blocking myself.
'They were just hitting me with steel poles and heated poles.
'I'm physically and mentally not normal anymore. They ruined my life basically.'

Irish influencer Nasti_2k ‘unaware of probe' into promotion of unregulated trading platform
In recent months, Dubliner Jonathan Finlay has been encouraging his social media followers to sign up to the Seychelles-registered service Irish influencer Jonathan Finlay has said he is 'not aware of any ongoing investigation by the Central Bank into his affairs' or his promotion of an unregulated trading platform. Mr Finlay (25), who goes by Nasti_2k online, has amassed 856,000 followers on his TikTok and Instagram accounts from posting food content. The Dubliner has repeatedly claimed he makes 'no money whatsoever' from social media and his main source of income is from trading. 'In Ireland, they [Instagram and TikTok] don't pay; you don't get paid for your likes, views or followers,' he said in a video posted on instant messaging app Telegram. Mr Finlay said he has been able to afford to fly first-class on '11 or 12 holidays' this year, 'all because of trading'. In recent months, the influencer has been encouraging his followers to sign up to T4Trade, an offshore platform registered in the Seychelles. He has a 'VIP group' on Telegram, where he charges a €1,000 'entry fee' to join so users can copy the trades he uses to make money. The TikToker had been making the group free to join to 'celebrate' his own successful investments, with subscribers told they need minimum starting funds of €300. I'm taking on these people free of charge once you follow these steps 'This is your funds that you will trade with, NOT a fee or anything! I'm taking on these people free of charge once you follow these steps,' he says. 'By joining the VIP you'll get access to: my daily trades, 24/7 support to help you get up and running and help with any issues; and educational material. 'Send a screenshot of your dashboard to me when you complete the sign up and deposit. I'll get you added into the trading channel and get you started ASAP.' In another video, he referenced how his VIP group has more than 2,000 members who are making 'hundreds week-on-week' from trading. 'Are you happy with how much money you're making? Ninety per cent plus people said they're not and I think back to that time when I was working like a slave, 7pm to 7am, five or six days a week, and I just wish someone gave me an opportunity to make a side income that could potentially turn into your main income, and I wanna do that for you guys,' he said T4Trade states its website is not directed at EU residents and 'falls outside the European regulatory framework'. The site includes a risk warning that says its products 'carry a high level of risk and it is possible to lose all your capital'. Several regulators have issued warnings against the company. The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) in the UK said: 'This firm may be providing financial services or products without our authorisation. You should avoid dealing with this firm.' Last year, the Danish Financial Supervisory Authority (DFSA) claimed Danish influencers were 'soliciting their followers to invest with T4Trade's investment platform' and warned that people would not get their money back 'if things go wrong' because the company is not authorised to offer financial services in Denmark. The Central Bank of Ireland in Dublin. Photo: Jason Alden/Bloomberg When asked if it was investigating any complaints against T4Trade, the Central Bank of Ireland said it is 'bound by strict statutory obligations of confidentiality and is precluded from commenting on the specific investigations it undertakes'. While it had been reported that the Central Bank was 'looking into the matter', Mr Finlay said he had not been made aware of any investigation. In response to queries from the Irish Independent, Lavelle Solicitors, instructed by Mr Finlay, said: 'Our client is not aware of any ongoing investigation by the Central Bank into his affairs, nor has he received any contact from the Central Bank in relation to any ongoing investigation into T4Trade.' Mr Finlay, who has a master's degree in digital marketing from UCD, said he has not been giving any financial advice. We have instructions to take all necessary steps to protect our client's reputation 'In so far as your queries relate to T4Trade or contain allegations against T4Trade, we suggest that you direct your queries to that entity,' Lavelle Solicitors said. The statement went on to claim that 'factually inaccurate' information had been previously published about Mr Finlay's relationship with T4Trade. 'In the event that any defamatory content is published about our client, we have instructions to take all necessary steps to protect our client's reputation'. The Irish Independent contacted T4Trade for comment. If consumers deal with a financial firm that is not authorised, there is no recourse to statutory compensation schemes or the Financial Services and Pensions Ombudsman. 'Whether a particular entity or individual requires to be registered or authorised by the Central Bank depends on the exact nature of the services provided by the entity or individual,' the Central Bank said. T4Trade advises people about different trading methods, including Forex trading, which involves buying one currency while selling another. Traders try to speculate on how these will change in value. Spain holiday horror as Irish tourists battered by gang in late-night ambush
Two Irish tourists were left with facial fractures and other injuries after being attacked by a teenage gang of armed robbers in a Costa del Sol holiday resort. They were assaulted as they walked back to their hotel in the picturesque town of Nerja around 30 miles east of Malaga after a boozy night out. Police are understood to have identified the suspects as four local youngsters believed to include a minor. It was not immediately clear this morning if the Civil Guard has made any arrests. The mugging happened in the early hours of Friday morning. Respected local paper Sur said the culprits threatened their victims with a knife before repeatedly punching and kicking them and fleeing with stolen cash and mobile phones. It described the attack as so "violent" remains of blood were left spattered on a residential property by where the mugging took place. Police were alerted by local residents who heard screams and shouting. The Irish holidaymakers, who were said to have been unable to defend themselves properly from the blows they received because they were drunk, reportedly each suffered several facial fractures among other injuries. They were taken to a nearby health centre and are thought to have been transferred afterwards to hospital. The Civil Guard in Malaga has not yet made any official comment about the incident. Nerja is the easternmost town on the Costa del Sol and is known for its beautiful beaches and its caves stretching for almost five kilometres which are one of Spain's major tourist attractions. In September last year a 29-year-old Irish holidaymaker ended up in a specialist hospital burns unit after a freak accident at a friend's wedding in the resort. She was seriously injured after being engulfed in flames when her dress caught fire on decorative candles as she was in the bathroom. Fellow guests dialled 999 after finding her semi-conscious at a holiday rental apartment. She was initially taken to a hospital in the nearby city of Malaga where she is understood to have undergone an emergency operation before being transferred to a burns unit at Seville's Virgen del Rocio University Hospital. ‘Dublin torture gang burnt me and beat me, then stopped to order chips'
Natalie Ennis tells of callous gang's abuse Natalie Ennis was taken by a gang of men to a flat in Henrietta House in Dublin 7 in September last year after she was falsely blamed for missing drugs. Five gang members were jailed last week for between eight and 14 years for the depraved attack on the 38-year-old mother of one. In an interview in the Sunday Independent, she said during her harrowing ordeal her attackers were 'all ordering chippers for themselves' and going to the shops for bottles of coke and Lucozade. 'It's something I live with every day. You are talking to me now and I can still see it happen to me,' she said. From above, Braxton Rice, Mark McMahon, Mark Keogh, Sean Conroy and Kian Walshe – five of the eight men involved in the horrific assault Mark McMahon Mark Keogh Sean Conroy Kian Walshe The attack occurred on Thursday, September 26, when the man she was renting a room in an apartment came in and said: 'Right, let's go. He had a gash on his face and that's when I knew there was something wrong,' she said. She was driven to Henrietta House in the north inner city, and to a squalid flat. She was whacked across the head with metal bars, a hammer was heated up and pressed against her bare skin. She was repeatedly kicked her in the face and had a hatchet held to her head. One of her attackers looked up her personal details on Facebook, looked up her family, and threatened to rape her daughter, who was just 17. Ms Ennis, who had been pummelled, slashed and burnt, found the courage to speak out: 'I said youse won't be doing nothing to my daughter. You'll do it to me,' she said. 'Jesus. That got me big time.' Ms Ennis believed she was going to die. 'In my head, I was going to ask them could I just ring and say goodbye to my Ma and my daughter,' she said. Out of nowhere, armed gardaí rammed open the door and swarmed the flat. By coincidence, they were coincidentally executing a warrant relating to a completely different matter. Ms Ennis spent weeks in hospital with severe injuries including burns, severe bruising, fractures to her cheekbone and eye socket, a broken nasal bone, broken elbow. She had to have spinal surgery to have a disc removed. She was 'terrified' when she was discharged because she had nowhere to go, and has been living for the last 10 months in a crisis accommodation centre for woman escaping domestic violence run by Sonas. Apart from ongoing pain and medical issues, she said she is constantly terrified and suffers night terrors. Natalie Ennis stood up to the torturers' threats against her daughter 'I barely go outside the door. When I do it's in a taxi. I'm afraid of every fella that walks by me,' she said. 'I don't feel safe once I leave this building. This is my safe place.' Having waited 10 months for a psychiatric appointment, she was finally given one on Friday, the day after she was interviewed on RTE's Prime Time. Braxton Rice (21), was sentenced to 14 years in jail. Mark McMahon (55) was jailed for 12 years. His son, 33-year-old Mark Keogh, was jailed for nine. Sean Conroy (21), from Ballymun, was jailed for 12 years. Kian Walshe (22) from Dublin 7 was jailed for eight-and-a-half years. The men apologised to Ms Ennis, and one wrote to her. 'That means nothing to me. Evil demon devil,' she said. News in 90 Seconds - Sunday, August 3rd
