Nga to lead Malaysian delegation to UN-Habitat Assembly in Nairobi

The Star24-05-2025
PUTRAJAYA: Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming will lead the Malaysian delegation to the headquarters of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) in Nairobi, Kenya, next week to participate in the UN-Habitat General Assembly (UNHA).
In a statement Saturday (May 24), the Housing and Local Government Ministry said this marks a significant milestone for Malaysia, as the country is contesting for the presidency.
"If elected, Malaysia will lead this key UN body, which comprises 193 member states, for the 2026-2029 term," the statement said.
The Ministry said the second session of the UN-Habitat Assembly will take place at the UN-Habitat headquarters in Nairobi on May 29 and 30, during which the presidential election will be held.
"If elected, it would be the first time in 15 years that a Malaysian has chaired a UN body, since Tan Sri Hamidon Ali served as United Nations Economic and Social Council (Ecosoc) president in 2010.
"Previously, Tan Sri Razali Ismail held the presidency of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) from 1996 to 1997, and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim served as United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) president in 1988," it said.
Meanwhile, Nga emphasised that if Malaysia is elected to this significant position, it would not only elevate the country's voice on the international stage but also provide an opportunity to lead and shape global sustainable urban development agendas affecting billions of people worldwide.
"This is not just a diplomatic honour but also a valuable opportunity to demonstrate our capability in international policymaking. By assuming this role, we not only represent Malaysia but also strengthen global communities, working together towards more livable and lovable cities," he said.
The official results of the election for the UN-Habitat presidency will be announced on May 30.
In addition, Nga is also scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with leaders from Kenya, Mexico, Azerbaijan, China, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) during his visit to Nairobi.
The UNHA is the highest-level, decision-making body on sustainable urbanisation and human settlements within the UN system. It convenes every four years to set key issues and policy priorities for UN-Habitat's work. — Bernama

Steven Sim congratulates Abdul Halim on MTUC presidency

KUALA LUMPUR: Human Resources Minister Steven Sim has congratulated Datuk Abdul Halim Mansor on his election as president of the Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC), expressing confidence in his ability to lead the organisation. Sim said Abdul Halim's 40 years of experience in the trade union movement positioned him well to defend the rights and welfare of Malaysian workers. "I believe he will lead MTUC with wisdom and determination in upholding the dignity of workers," he said in an Instagram post today. Sim also invited the newly elected MTUC leadership to visit him at Wisma Pekerja to renew collaboration with the ministry. "MTUC remains a strategic partner in formulating fair, progressive and worker-focused policies," he said. Abdul Halim secured 227 votes to win the presidency during MTUC's recent delegates' conference, narrowly defeating Mohd Effendy Abdul Ghani of the Union of Clerical and Postal Workers of Pos Malaysia Bhd (UPCW), who garnered 218 votes. The election was held following a Court of Appeal ruling on Feb 21, which directed MTUC to have fresh leadership polls within 90 days. The re-election process was managed by a Special Joint Committee (JBK).

Johor and Riau Islands police boost cross-border security cooperation

JOHOR BAHRU: The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) and the Indonesian National Police (Polri) have reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing cross-border security cooperation during a high-level meeting today. The discussions focused on tackling maritime security threats, smuggling, human trafficking, and terrorism in the Johor-Riau Islands waters. The meeting was attended by Johor's newly appointed police chief, CP Ab Rahaman Arsad, and Riau Islands Regional Police Chief Inspector General Asep Safrudin. Both leaders emphasized the importance of joint efforts to safeguard the shared maritime border. 'Johor, as a maritime border state with the Riau Islands, remains committed to ensuring the safety of the region through close cooperation between the two regional enforcement agencies,' stated the Johor police in an official Facebook post. Also present was ASP Riza Sativa, police consul and liaison officer from the Indonesian Consulate General in Johor Bahru, who plays a key role in facilitating coordination between Polri and Malaysian security forces. In his first press conference yesterday, CP Ab Rahaman highlighted Johor's strategic location bordering Singapore and proximity to Indonesia, making it a critical security gateway. He stressed the need for heightened preparedness among PDRM personnel to address emerging threats. With over 10,000 police officers in Johor, CP Ab Rahaman described the force as a vital asset in combating cross-border crime and drug-related offenses. - Bernama

Israel to allow merchant-led aid into Gaza amid famine crisis

GAZA: Israel has announced plans to permit a gradual and controlled entry of goods into Gaza through local merchants, aiming to reduce dependence on international aid agencies. The move comes as global monitors warn of famine spreading across the enclave, worsening conditions for hostages held by Hamas. Israel's military agency COGAT confirmed the cabinet-approved mechanism, which will allow basic food supplies, baby food, fruits, vegetables, and hygiene products into Gaza. 'This aims to increase the volume of aid entering the Gaza Strip, while reducing reliance on aid collection by the U.N. and international organisations,' COGAT stated. However, logistical challenges remain due to widespread destruction in Gaza. Palestinian and UN officials estimate that 600 aid trucks per day are needed to meet humanitarian needs—a figure Israel previously allowed before the war. Recent images of malnourished Palestinians, including children, have drawn global concern. A Hamas-released video showing an emaciated Israeli captive further intensified criticism from Western nations. In response, Israel has taken steps to facilitate aid, including temporary ceasefires in certain areas and protected routes for aid convoys. Hamas has offered to coordinate aid delivery to hostages via the Red Cross, provided Israel permanently opens humanitarian corridors and stops airstrikes during distributions. Meanwhile, tensions persist over aid distribution methods, with the UN rejecting a U.S.-backed organisation, the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), citing neutrality concerns. The war, triggered by Hamas' October 7, 2023 attack on southern Israel, has led to over 60,000 Palestinian deaths, according to Gaza health officials. Israel reports 50 hostages still in Gaza, with only 20 believed alive. - Reuters
