Proxy war
A few days ago, a suicide bombing on a school bus in Khuzdar claimed six lives, four of them children, and wounded 40 other children. In his conversation at the jirga, the Army chief said that Indian-sponsored proxy war is no longer hidden; it is an open malicious act of terrorism waged on our people, our progress, and our peace. 'We have concrete proof of India's hand behind terrorist networks operating in Balochistan', he averred, adding 'these nefarious attempts of the enemy will fail.'
As a matter of fact, India's role in fomenting terrorism has been an open secret since the ultra-Hindu nationalist Prime Minister Narendra Modi came to power in 2014.
A while ago, his national security advisor had publicly declared his government's new 'Offensive Defence Strategy' aimed at destabilising Pakistan by waging hybrid warfare — inflicting harm on this country without engaging in a direct military confrontation. This the Indian government has been doing by providing funding, arms and training to BLA and other such groups through its intelligence agency RAW operatives, like the naval officer Kulbhushan Jadhav, who was arrested while aiding and instigating acts of terrorism in Balochistan.
After the humiliating setback suffered in its 'Operation Sindoor' against Pakistan, the Modi government has an even stronger urge to try and undermine Pakistan via its proxies, some of whom have no hesitation to show the connection.
The day after cessation of hostilities on May 10, BLA openly asked, in a press release, India to take action against Pakistan, promising to act along with other Baloch militant groups as its 'military arm' on the western side.
India hurts Pakistan to achieve its strategic objective of weakening a traditional rival by exploiting its fault lines. But the current approach to the security environment in that troubled province, to say the least, is unproductive. Use of force for the past two decades has not helped resolve the situation, and calls for course correction.
What is needed is a multi-dimensional approach to address longstanding grievances of the Baloch people, which play into the hands of hostile forces. It is good to note that in his speech to the jirga PM Sharif emphasised the need for talks to bring back those 'misled' by terrorists, and redress the wider issues plaguing the province. That though can happen only if true representatives of the Baloch people are duly empowered to hold meaningful talks with leadership of the dissidents.

Photo courtesy: Radio Pakistan Listen to article The federal cabinet on Wednesday approved 15% increase in pensions provided by the Employees' Old-Age Benefits Institution (EOBI), effective from January 1, 2025, on the recommendation of the Ministry of Overseas Pakistanis and Human Resource Development. This increase will be funded from the institution's own resources. The meeting of the federal cabinet was held under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif. The prime minister directed the formation of a cabinet committee to introduce institutional reforms in EOBI. The committee will also deliberate on proposals to extend old-age benefits to the informal labor sector, including domestic workers, agricultural laborers, and other marginalized employment categories that have been previously overlooked. The reforms aim to ensure that workers in these neglected sectors receive their due rights. The cabinet also approved the initiation of necessary legal procedures regarding the draft of the Sea Carriage Shipping Documents Bill, 2025, on the recommendation of the Ministry of Maritime Affairs. On the recommendation of the Ministry of National Health Services, the cabinet approved a five-year extension of exemption on the import of anti-cancer, cardiac, and life-saving drugs used in hospitals and related healthcare institutions. The medicines are considered vital for saving human lives, and the exemption is intended to ensure their prompt availability. These drugs will be available only in hospitals and authorized institutions, with a ban on open market sales. Import of these medicines will require prior approval from the relevant licensing authority. The cabinet also endorsed the decisions made in the meetings of the Cabinet Committee on Legislative Cases held on July 2, 2025, and July 3, 2025. Earlier addressing the cabinet, the prime minister commended the efforts of all provincial governments, the federal administration, as well as authorities in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) and Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) for making the best possible arrangements during Muharram. He also expressed gratitude to the law enforcement agencies and all stakeholders for maintaining law and order during the religious observances. The prime minister also spoke about disaster preparedness amid the ongoing monsoon season. He said he had chaired a high-level meeting with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and Provincial Disaster Management Authorities (PDMAs) to ensure best arrangements. He commended the efforts of NDMA for making arrangements to cope with heavy rains in different parts of the country. He expressed sorrow over the loss of lives due to heavy rainfall in various parts of the country, specifically the tragic incident in Swat. He said it was an unfortunate incident and emphasized the need to learn lessons from it and implement measures to prevent similar tragedies in the future. On the economic front, PM Shehbaz expressed satisfaction over the recent positive trends in macroeconomic indicators. He reiterated his government's focus on performance and service delivery, announcing that the performance of ministries would be evaluated every two months. "This message I want to make loud and clearit is all about delivery and service to the nation," the prime minister stressed. He added that ministries performing well will be acknowledged and appreciated, while those falling short will be held accountable and asked to explain. During the meeting, he also praised Federal Minister for Planning Ahsan Iqbal for his ministry's effective utilization of development funds, noting that the development spending had reached over Rs 1 trillion under the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP).

Three dead in gun attack on bus carrying Qawwali ensemble
Listen to article At least three people were martyred, while seven others sustained injuries in a deadly gun attack on a passenger coach near Niemurgh Cross in the Kalat district of Balochistan on Wednesday, local officials and the provincial government spokesperson confirmed. The deceased, all belonging to a Qawwali group from Karachi were heading to the Balochistan capital to perform in an event there. The provincial government officials accused the Fitna al-Hindustan — the Indian proxy insurgents — for the indiscriminate killing of innocent civilians. Elsewhere in the province, a security force officer was martyred, while three Indian proxy terrorists were killed in an intelligence-based operation (IBO) in the Awaran district, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said in a press release. The bus attack came after last week's similar assault in the Loralai district, in which nine passengers were abducted and shot dead after their identity check by terrorists. That attack was claimed by an India-backed Baloch terrorist outfit. The officials said that the passenger bus came under fire from unidentified armed men, while it was traveling from Karachi to Quetta, adding that the police and rescue teams responded immediately, and shifted the victims to a hospital and began search operations for the perpetrators. "The injured are being provided medical assistance at the DHQ [District Headquarters] Hospital in Kalat," Balochistan government spokesperson Shahid Rind said in a statement. "Security personnel are present at the location, and investigation is in progress," he added. Though there was no immediate confirmation of the identities of the victims from the Balochistan government officials, sources in Karachi said that they were part of the 15-member group, and were travelling to Quetta for a Qawwali performance. The sources said that the victims belonged to the Majid Ali Sabri group, based in Karachi's Pir Illahi Bux Colony. In a social media post, a group member, Nadeem, was heard saying that the attack happened when they were about 45 minutes of drive away from their destination. The man was heard as saying that three members of the group had died because of the firing and many others were injured. "What was our fault? We are the people who perform Qawwali and recite Naat Sharif," the man said in the viral video. It is learnt that Majid Ali Sabri group were not related to famous Sabri Brothers — Ghulam Farid Sabri and Maqbool Sabri. Talha Sabri, son of Ghulam Farid Sabri and younger brother another famous Qawwal of the family, Amjad Sabri, said that the victims were not related the Sabri Qawwal family. "Majid Ali and Nadeem Ali, who are the victims of the tragic incident, belong to a Qawwal family. We pray for Allah's mercy on those, who died in the tragedy and the quick recovery of those who sustained injuries," Talha Sabri told The Express Tribune. The motive behind the Kalat assault remains unclear, but Balochistan has been gripped by a deadly violence, being carried out by insurgent groups, which are supported by the India. Last week, Fitna-e-Hindustan terrorists killed at least nine bus passengers after checking their identities in Loralai. Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfaraz Bugti accused the Fitna-e-Hindustan for the cowardly attack on the innocent civilians. "The attack on a passenger coach in Kalat is a cowardly and despicable act of terrorism. The loss of precious lives is an irreparable loss," he said in a post on X. "The terrorist organizations of Fitna-al Hind, which earlier gave the impression of attacks based on identity, are now targeting civilians indiscriminately, which clearly shows that this war is against every Pakistani," he added. "We will foil it at all costs!" Condemnations pour in President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed their deep sorrow over the martyrdom of innocent civilians. The president said that terrorists wanted to disrupt peace and stability in the province because they were the enemies of humanity. "The terrorists who harm the lives and property of innocent and unarmed civilians will have to pay a very heavy price," The Prime Minister Office Media Wing quoted Prime Minister Shehbaz in a press release, as saying The president and the prime minister reaffirmed that the government and the security forces were fully determined to eliminate terrorism from the country. "With the support of the nation, we will eradicate the cancer of terrorism from the country," Zardari said, according to President Secretariat Press Wing. Meanwhile, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi condemned the attack by Fitna-ul-Hindustan terrorists on a passenger bus. Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah also condemned the terrorist attack, terming it "a very barbaric act". Awaran IBO Meanwhile, the ISPR, the media wing of the military, said in a press release that an officer was martyred, while three Indian proxy terrorists were killed in an IBO, which was carried out in the Awaran district on the reported presence of the terrorists, belonging to Indian Proxy Fitna al Hindustan. "During the conduct of operation, own troops effectively engaged the terrorist location and resultantly, three Indian sponsored terrorists were sent to hell," it said. "However, during the intense fire exchange, Major Syed Rabnawaz Tariq (age: 34 years, resident of District Muzafarabad), a brave officer who was leading his troops from the front, fought gallantly and paid the ultimate sacrifice," it added. The ISPR said that sanitisation operation was being conducted to eliminate any other terrorist found in the area, as "the security forces of Pakistan are determined to wipe out the menace of Indian Sponsored Terrorism from the country, and such sacrifices of our brave men further strengthen our resolve". Pakistan, China agree to deepen ties
Listen to article The foreign ministers of Pakistan and China on Wednesday agreed to further bolster their bilateral cooperation in order to promote regional peace, stability and development. Senator Ishaq Dar and Wang Yi met on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) meeting in Tianjin and reviewed bilateral ties and discussed regional and international development. The meeting took place before Dar wrapped up his three-day trip to China where he went to attend the SCO Council of Foreign Ministers meeting. A statement issued by the Foreign Office said Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar met Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi reaffirmed the two countries' commitment to strengthen their strategic partnership. Dar congratulated Wang Yi on the successful hosting of the SCO foreign ministers' meeting and expressed gratitude for the warm hospitality extended by China during the event. The two leaders held extensive discussions on issues of mutual interest, including progress on the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and enhanced multilateral cooperation. Underscoring the significance of the Pakistan-China All-Weather Strategic Cooperative Partnership, both sides expressed satisfaction over their ongoing close collaboration across various fields. They also reiterated their resolve to further bolster bilateral ties to promote regional peace, stability, and development. The two ministers also discussed the upcoming visit of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif took China. The prime minister is set to attend the SCO heads of governments meeting in late August but he will also meet President Xi Jinping. According to officials familiar with the development, the prime minister will be accompanied by Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir. The upcoming trip by Pakistan's top civil and military leadership carries added significance in the wake of the four-day military conflict with India during which Pakistan gained the upper hand, with its air force shooting down six Indian fighter jets, including the French-made Rafale. The conflict drew attention to China's military hardware, with several Western capitals closely monitoring the developments in South Asia. Chinese-made J-10C fighter jets and beyond-visual-range PL-15 missiles played a critical role. However, it was Pakistan's indigenous systems integration that made the Chinese hardware even lethal. During a recent visit to Pakistan, the chief of the Chinese Air Force expressed a keen interest in learning from Pakistan's combat experience and multi-domain operations. In a related development, the Indian Deputy Chief of Army Staff recently claimed that India was engaged in a two-front conflict, while pointing out Chinese involvement in Pakistan's military success. Pakistan procures 80 per cent of its military hardware from China. However, the Pakistan army chief at a recent Corps Commanders' meeting clarified that the May conflict was "unmistakably bilateral". Meanwhile, Foreign Minister returned to Islamabad after concluding a successful two-day visit to China for the SCO Council of Foreign Ministers, according to his office. In addition to participating in the main SCO CFM proceedings and the joint call on President Xi Jinping, the DPM/FM held bilateral meetings with his counterparts from SCO member states, it said. China's foreign minister said on Wednesday that China was willing to deepen cooperation with Pakistan in agriculture, industry and mining, as he met with his Pakistani counterpart in Tianjin, according to a Chinese statement. China "supports Pakistan in carrying out its anti-terrorism operations" and believes Pakistan would "do its utmost" to ensure the safety of Chinese personnel, projects and institutions in Pakistan, China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi told Pakistan's Ishaq Dar.
