Navy meets 2025 recruitment goal months ahead of schedule
June 19 (UPI) -- The U.S. Navy is saying it has already met its recruiting goal for 2025 and did so earlier than expected.
Secretary of the Navy John C. Phelan said that he is "proud to announce that we have met our Fiscal Year 2025 recruiting goal three months ahead of schedule," in a post to X Wednesday evening.
"A total of 40,600 future Sailors have stepped up to serve," he added, who will be sent to its Recruit Training Command by September.
In an accompanying video, Phelan credited the efforts of naval recruiters, team innovation and "the courage of thousands of who stepped forward to serve" in regard to its having reached its enlistment target so quickly.
The Navy further stated in a press release that it had also surpassed its 40,600 recruitments aim in 2024 by 378 people, and those 40,978 recruits were the most contracted since 2002.
The Navy Recruiting Command's Rear Admiral Jim Waters said of the naval recruitment process in the release that "It shows that when we remove barriers, accelerate processes, and meet people where they are, the right individuals answer the call."
He also noted that "Meeting the recruiting target is not the finish line," but instead a signal that "we're on the right course and ready to keep building the force of the future."
The Navy has made moves in the recent past to help attract potential sailors, such as having raised its maximum enlistment age to 41 in 2022, and as of 2024 allows those without a high school diploma to join as long as they achieve a score a 50 or higher on the Armed Forces Qualification Test.

Skydiving plane crashes off off N.J. runway; casualties reported

File Photo by Bonnie Cash/UPI | License Photo July 2 (UPI) -- A skydiving plane with 15 people aboard went off the end of a runway in southern New Jersey on Wednesday evening, federal authorities said. A number of casualties have been reported. The Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement that the Cessna 208B aircraft was departing Cross Keys Airport in Williamstown, located 52 miles southeast of Trenton, at 5:30 p.m. EDT when the incident happened. Gloucester County Emergency Management reported it as a "multi-agency MASS CASUALTY INCIDENT" on social media. "Downed Aircraft -- Please avoid the area to allow emergency vehicles the best access!" it said. Monroe Township Mayor Gregory Wolfe said in a statement that there were 14 passengers and one pilot on the plane. Fourteen occupants have been transported to either Cooper Hospital or Inspira Hospital with injuries ranging from minor to critical. The 15th occupant refused medical treatment at the scene. "At this time, there are fortunately no fatalities reported," he said. "Please keep all the victims in your thoughts and prayers during this time." Andrew Halter, with the emergency management services, told The New York Times that three people sustained critical injuries and were airlifted to the hospital. He said the aircraft had been leased to Skydive Cross Keys and had "reported engine trouble prior to the crash." Both the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board said they were investigating. Skydive Cross Keys said on its website that it is "the largest skydiving center in the region" and is known "for high safety standards and a warm, friendly vibe."

Fortune cookie numbers earn Kentucky woman a $50,000 lottery prize

Lexington resident Kathy Bailey told Kentucky Lottery officials she copied the numbers off the back of the fortune inside her daughter's cookie and used them to buy a Powerball ticket and place a $5 wager on the Golden Snake Triple Play game on the lottery's Instant Play page. She appropriately selected the game's Fortune Cookie Bonus. "I almost always choose the Fortune Cookie Bonus," she said. "I just happened to choose that one. I just hit it and there it went." The Instant Play game earned her a $50,000 prize. "I was on my laptop when I saw the big 'winner' notification, followed by the $50,000 amount," she said. "It was a lot to digest, and I had to double-check to make sure I wasn't seeing things." Bailey said her winnings will help her plan for the future. "My husband is retiring in December, and this will be some extra money to have on hand," she said. "We've already taken care of our house, van, and truck, so this will just be a nice addition to our savings."

Watch: Runaway emus found miles from home in Minnesota
July 2 (UPI) -- A pair of emus escaped from their home at a Minnesota farm during a storm and turned up several miles from home. Tom Halek said his emus, Sami and Ali, escaped from a partially-open gate on his Rush City property during weekend storms. "I figured the way they can move, who knows where they'd end up," Halek told CBS Minnesota. The emus were spotted near Rush Lake Road on Sunday before wandering miles from home and ending up in Chisago County. "Calling all Emu owners... We did make calls to Liberty Mutual Insurance, this is not their LiMu Emu. It also isn't Kevin from the popular movie, Up, we verified that by calling Doug. So if you happen to know the owner of this Emu, please have them reach out to dispatch to let us know," the Chisago County Sheriff's Office said on social media. Halek contacted the sheriff's office and learned the birds had been safely contained. "The sheriff called us back and said, 'We know where they're at.'" Halek said. "Somebody else in the area that owns emus also thought they were his, so he ran and he captured them, brought them home and he realized 'Wait a minute, these aren't mine.'" Halek said Sami and Ali are a little spooked from their time on the loose, but otherwise healthy and unharmed.
