Drone ban enforced in Thane amid security concerns

Commissionerate has clamped down on drone operations, imposing a comprehensive ban on all unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) within city limits, officials said on Wednesday.
The prohibition, effective from 14 May to 3 June, comes as authorities step up security measures across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The order specifically forbids all drone flights, regardless of purpose or operator, police officials told TOI.
"This is a preventive measure to maintain law and order," said a senior police official who requested anonymity. "The potential misuse of such devices could pose a significant threat to public safety."
Dr Shrikant Paropkari, Deputy Commissioner (Headquarters-1), Special Branch, who issued the order, warned that violators would face stringent action under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, along with other applicable laws.
The ban extends to all forms of aerial equipment, including remote-controlled microlight aircraft, paragliders, paramotors, hand gliders, and hot air balloons.
This development follows similar restrictions implemented by Mumbai Police from 5 May, after the DGCA designated several areas as 'red zones' for drone operations. Recently, a 23-year-old was booked for flying a drone in Powai, highlighting the authorities' zero-tolerance approach.
Residents have been urged to report any unauthorised drone activity to the nearest police station or by calling the emergency number 112.

Palghar school watchman held for allegedly sexually abusing two minor boys
Police have arrested a 53-year-old security guard of a private school in Maharashtra's Palghar district for allegedly sexually abusing two male students, officials said. The alleged incidents occurred between June 15 and 20, the officials said on Sunday (July 27, 2025). The victims, aged 17 and 15, are students of the same school located in Virar area. "The alleged incidents occurred in the canteen of the school," the Arnala police stated. The accused was arrested on Saturday (July 26, 2025)evening, the police added. "After receiving a complaint from the school's manager, we registered an FIR against the watchman, Raymond Wilson Dias, under section 75 (sexual harassment) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and sections 5, 8 and 12 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act," the Arnala police station official said. Sections 5 of the POCSO Act pertains to penetrative sexual assault. In August 2024, a male sweeper at a school in Badlapur in neighbouring Thane district allegedly sexually abused two four-year-old girls, causing a huge outrage and massive protests. The accused was killed in September last year in the 'retaliatory firing' by police after he allegedly snatched the gun from a policeman in a police vehicle.

Police later took Khewalkar, an MD (medicine) and the husband of Rohini Khadse, who heads the NCP (SP)'s state women's wing, and others to Sassoon hospital for medical tests and then to his bungalow in Hadapsar where searches were carried out as part of an investigation to trace the source of the drugs. "A laptop, three pen drives and a hard disk were among the articles seized from the bungalow," a police officer said. Khewalkar and the others were produced before judicial magistrate first class N S Bari who ordered their custodial remand until Tuesday. 'Love Jihad' gang busted in UP's Kushinagar, 2 women among 8 arrested
Kushinagar police have busted a gang allegedly involved in trapping Hindu girls in the guise of "Love Jihad" and forcibly converting them to Islam. A total of eight individuals, including two women, have been arrested in connection with the arrests were made following a complaint lodged by Sunil Verma, who alleged that his 19-year-old daughter was lured and taken to Amritsar, where she was forcibly converted and kept hidden by a group operating as an organised on the complaint, a joint team of local police and cyber cell launched a search operation and recovered the girl safely on Sunday. Police also recovered two Aadhaar cards-one in her original name, Neha Verma, and another issued in her converted name, Parvani Khatoon — along with 11 SIM cards and nine mobile phones allegedly used in the operation. Superintendent of Police Santosh Kumar Mishra said, "Complainant Sunil Verma of Mahuawa Buzurg submitted an application saying that his daughter was taken from Amritsar and hidden after being converted by some individuals. This was an organised gang, and eight people have been arrested so far. Ashiq Ansari, Imtiyaz, Mohammad Sahab, among others, gave her a new name after conversion and kept her hidden. Further investigation is ongoing."The arrested individuals have been identified as Taufiq Ansari, Ashiq Ansari and his son Imtiyaz, Mohammad Sahab Ansari, Zeeshan Qamar, Mazhar, and two women, Kaiser Jahan and Fatima. According to the police, the accused confessed to being part of a well-organised network that targeted Hindu women for religious claimed the gang pursued the victim over a long period, manipulating her through emotional exploitation and inducements, and ultimately coerced her into conversion. They also said Taufiq Ansari used explicit videos and recorded conversations to blackmail the victim's Jahan and Fatima allegedly played a key role in psychologically manipulating the girl, showing her religious content to influence her FIR has been registered under the relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Religious Conversion Act, 2021.
