Eco-Shop confident ahead of main market debut with RM420mil IPO
Eco-Shop said its initial public offering (IPO) is set to be the largest IPO to be launched in the past eight months, with an estimated RM419.87 million to be raised through the public issuance of 347 million new shares, based on the IPO retail price of RM1.21 per share.
The company will also offer 675.37 million shares to institutional investors at a price to be determined through a book-building process, it said in a statement.
The IPO has secured ten investors acting as cornerstone investors, who collectively subscribed for 90.91 million shares or 90.31 per cent of the institutional offering, the firm said.
Its chief executive officer and executive director Jessica Ng said that global market uncertainties have undoubtedly impacted both investor and consumer sentiment.
However, she said Eco-Shop remains optimistic that its value proposition is timely and well-suited to the current environment.
"Market forces are definitely one of the factors that we take into consideration (for listing).
"However, in this tough situation (with market uncertainties), a business model like ours is even more needed. (Looking at the US tariffs) and the rising cost, we are very ultra-affordable," she told reporters during the press conference today, in conjunction with the launch of the IPO prospectus.
She said Eco-Shop has consistently proven its business strength over the years, with strong sourcing capabilities and a competitive edge in bulk purchasing.
"We also have solid operations and infrastructure, and the ability to buy in volume and repackage products into smaller sizes," she added.
Eco-Shop's listing on the Main Market is set for May 23, 2025.
In response to a question about the product price hike, Ng explained that the rise from RM2.40 to RM2.60 (starting April 14) was due to the increase in the minimum wage, but she emphasised that most of its workers fall within the B40 income group.
"The majority of EcoShop employees are under the B40 group. So, we will have to make this adjustment to help our employees as well.
"While the basic pay is RM1,700, Eco-Shop pays a basic wage of RM1,800. So, the decision was made as we have to balance between taking care of the stakeholders in the right way," she said.
Meanwhile, commenting on the IPO proceeds utilisation, Ng said Eco-Shop has allocated RM56.27 million (13.4 per cent) to accelerate the expansion of its retail footprint nationwide and RM200 million (47.6 per cent) to expand its distribution centres.
She added that RM10.90 million (2.6 per cent) is earmarked for investment in information technology hardware and software, RM100 million (23.8 per cent) towards repaying bank borrowings, and RM52.70 million (12.6 per cent) for working capital purposes and defraying the costs of the IPO and listing.
"We are targeting 70 stores per year for the next five years, and currently, the under-penetrated market will be the Klang Valley as well as East Malaysia.

Tackling current business issues
INDUSTRY experts gave tips at the recent Star Outstanding Business Awards 2025 LAB participants on how to navigate the challenging times wrought with geopolitical uncertainties. Then in the second session, the panel of experts explored different methods that small and medium enterprises (SMEs) seek financing outside of the conventional practice of approaching normal financial institutions. The afternoon event, which was held at Menara Star to a packed audience, was attended by Star Media Group chief executive officer Chan Seng Fatt and chief operating officer Lydia Wang. Similar to previous labs, there were two sessions that covered two distinct topics. The first topic explored the challenges that companies face in light of 'The Tariffs and Taxes Aftermath: What is Next for Malaysian Businesses?' Moderated by the Malaysia Entrepreneurs and Development Association president Datuk Teh Tai Yong, the topic was discussed by panel speakers past SOBA winner Mega Fortris Berhad group managing director and group chief executive officer Datuk Adrian Ng, PKT Logistics Group Sdn Bhd chief operations officer Dr Jason Cheah and Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (Matrade) strategic planning division director Noor Hayati Abu Noh. The speakers discussed the different scenarios that businesses have to confront, from the 25% tariffs imposed by the United States to the expanded Sales and Service Tax from the government as well as instances of supply chain disruptions due to the civil unrest in the Middle East. Ng advised businesses to understand themselves and to draw back until the time is right to scale back up. Noor Hayati both touched on the importance of diversification, either in business or which country to trade with. Cheah urged SMEs that it is time to start looking into environment, social and governance matters as it has a profound impact. The second session, which was moderated by Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia treasurer Datuk Koong Lin Loong, gave SMEs enlightening information on 'Raising Funds and Accessing Capital for Business Growth'. Speakers in this session included RHB Bank Berhad SME banking, SME engagement head Sim Ee Chiew, Credit Guarantee Corporation Malaysia chief business officer Sean Tan, PEOPLElogy Berhad founder Allen Lee and Hernan Corporation founder and group CEO Datuk Anna Teo. The panel gave a lively session as Teo declared she rarely approached banks for financing. She asked businesses to be more flexible and explore other possibilities. While banks would be the first step for budding businesses, she said entrepreneurs should network and ask about other alternatives, such as private equities. Tan explained that CGC's job is to transfer the credit risks from a bank to CGC. In the event a business fails, and the SME is unable to pay, CGC will provide the necessary relief. Ng shared his experience of raising funds via the initial public offering route, which he said was 'more challenging because (Bursa Malaysia) wants the public to trust you (hence the need for) transparency.' Sim said that banks do much more than just provide loans, they help enhance cash flow and operation efficiency in order to eliminate idle cash, as well as digitalisation services. Besides the panel discussions, SOBA sponsors introduced their business models and some of their services to the participants. CGC's SME advisory and strategic alliances head Mike Wong talked about some of the services that are available to SMEs that are seeking ways to finance their companies. PKT Logistic's presentation was on the company's diversified range of services, from logistics and education to its own inland port, presented by Cheah. RHB Bank SME business development head Kelvin Chin and U Mobile Sdn Bhd commercial pre-sales section head Lim Swee Mei showcased the services that would benefit SMEs in their businesses. SOBA 2025 is organised by SMG with CGC, PKT Logistics, RHB Bank and U Mobile as main sponsors, Great Wall Motor Malaysia as co-sponsor, and Matrade as the official trade promotion partner. It is audited by BDO while radio stations 988 and Suria are official media partners. Ng: Selangor Intelligent Parking initiative key to state's 'smart city' ambitions
KUALA LUMPUR: The Selangor Intelligent Parking (SIP) is more than just an initiative to improve parking systems under local councils; it's a key part of the state's "smart city" ambitions. Selangor Local Government and Tourism Committee chairman Datuk Ng Suee Lim said the "smart city" concept is the "way of the future". Ng stated that the SIP was being planned with this larger vision in mind. The system, he said, would align with the Smart Selangor initiative and serve the state's broader agenda, including establishing command centres and harnessing the power of big data. Ng also highlighted that beyond improving the parking system, improving security was a significant concern. "Previously, our parking systems did not have any integrated surveillance cameras (CCTVs) or other features," he told the New Straits Times. "Having such features means we can integrate our operations with the police. It would not be limited to just parking." "These things can be implemented together for the whole of Selangor in the future. This is for the first phase, and if it's successful, we can extend this model to all of Selangor," he added. Ng was commenting on concerns raised by several Pakatan Harapan Members of Parliament from Selangor. Earlier today, Shah Alam MP Azli Yusof, Subang MP Wong Chen, Petaling Jaya MP Lee Chean Chung, and Selayang MP William Leong held a press conference on SIP in the Dewan Rakyat. Among the issues they raised was the possibility of reduced revenues for local councils. Ng assured that the state government will ensure the implementation of the planned smart parking system results in a "win-win" situation for all parties, including local councils. He acknowledged the government was aware of the concerns some had about the SIP initiative, particularly the possible loss of revenue for local councils. "We have met councillors (from the local councils involved in SIP)," Ng said. "We take their concerns very seriously, but we still have time to look into these concerns to find a win-win solution." On the rollout, Ng said the Selangor Exco meeting today (Wed) would discuss the issues raised to ensure SIP's implementation is proper and goes smoothly. "But if more time is needed for further discussions, we will do it (postpone implementation)," he clarified. Ng also explained that the SIP for the four local councils involved – Subang Jaya, Petaling Jaya, Selayang, and Shah Alam – does not follow the traditional privatisation model. "This new model was approved by the state National Security Council. We involved Menteri Besar Incorporated (MBI) and state-owned subsidiary Rantaian Mesra," he said. "Through Rantaian Mesra, we also invited public and private companies to work with the local authorities on SIP." Ng expressed confidence that parking via SIP could be managed more effectively than before. Addressing questions about the RM200 million for the initial capital investment, which would be borne by the concessionaire, Ng said this figure was an estimated amount covering all four local councils over a five-year period. This would include upgrades to CCTVs and related systems. This includes the installation of about 1,800 CCTV cameras in high-traffic parking areas within the four councils. "For example, many people use false plates these days, so we must be able to detect these fake plates," he said, adding that this included cloned cars. "Otherwise, when you issue a summons and someone challenges it in court, we can lose."

Accenture makes maiden banking deal in Malaysia with Aristal acquisition
KUALA LUMPUR: New York-listed Accenture Plc has acquired Malaysia-based consulting and digital transformation firm Aristal Solutions Sdn Bhd, marking its first banking-focused acquisition in the country. The acquisition aims to enhance Accenture's ability to help banks in Malaysia upgrade core banking systems, improve operational efficiencies, and manage complex transitions such as mergers and platform overhauls. Its financial services lead in Southeast Asia Paul Ng said the move reflects the company's continued investment in the region to help clients embrace artificial intelligence, cloud, and modern core systems. "This acquisition strengthens Accenture's local capabilities to support these demands, particularly in navigating large-scale digital transformation for banks. "With deep expertise in core banking systems, Aristal has helped banks upgrade outdated platforms, improve operations, and deliver better customer experiences," said Ng in a statement today. Ng added that this also includes recent initiatives such as the acquisition of Percipient's digital twin technology for banks in Singapore and the establishment of the AI Refinery Engineering Hub to accelerate innovation and scalable transformation across the region. Aristal, which was founded in 2006, is known for its deep expertise in core banking transformation. The firm has delivered large-scale information technology and business transformation projects across Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand. Aristal managing director Lin Kok Liong said joining Accenture opens up strong opportunities for its team in Malaysia to grow and contribute on a larger stage. "By integrating into Accenture's global network of innovation and talent, we are not only expanding our capabilities, but also enhancing the value we can deliver to clients locally," he said. With the global core banking market projected to reach US$28.8 billion by 2027, Malaysia is expected to follow suit, driven by industry-wide efforts to modernise systems and strengthen digital capabilities. Additionally, Aristal's 30-member senior team will join Accenture's financial services practice in Malaysia. The integration is expected to strengthen the delivery of end-to-end transformation projects for financial institutions at scale.
