Surging UFC lightweight Mauricio Ruffy expects an opportunity to break into the rankings in his next outing.
Ruffy (12-1 MMA, 3-0 UFC) has quickly gained traction as a name to watch at 155 pounds following a hot start to his octagon tenure, highlighted by a Knockout of the Year contender against King Green at UFC 313 in March.
The Brazilian thinks the natural next step is to fight someone in the rankings, and he sees three specific names that fit the bill.
"I really believe that a name like that will come," Ruffy told Spin Genie. "Like Michael Chandler, Mateusz Gamrot, (Benoit) Saint Denis, I believe that one of those guys could come."
Ruffy, 29, said his confidence that a potential breakthrough fight is on the horizon stems form the fact he was already offered one. He was offered a short-notice bout against Gamrot earlier this year, but the circumstances prevented it.
That opportunity passed once, but whether it' Gamrot (25-3 MMA, 8-3 UFC) again, a former title challenger like Chandler (23-10 MMA, 2-5 UFC) or another dangerous name like Saint Denis (14-3 MMA, 6-3 UFC), he will be ready for them all.
"The UFC also offered me Mateusz Gamrot, but we were four days away from the fight and Jean Silva would be there to fight, so none of my coaches would be in the corner," Ruffy said. "This put us in a difficult position to accept the fight. Nevertheless, I'm confident that a significant opponent, like Michael Chandler, Mateusz Gamrot, or Saint Denis, will eventually come my way. We'll see how it unfolds."

Real Madrid's forward Rodrygo is attracting interest from various places at Europe. By Ravi Kumar Jha Published on July 7, 2025, 09:01 IST Real Madrid's forward Rodrygo is attracting interest from various places at Europe and there are several clubs looking to sign him, including the earlier rumour Arsenal. Apart from the PL side, the ESPN Brazil reported that the PSG is also interested in the forward and has made contact with his camp. Real Madrid forward Rodrygo Goes is reportedly attracting significant interest from across Europe, with several top clubs keeping a close eye on his situation at the Santiago Bernabéu. The Brazilian winger, who has played a key role in Los Blancos' recent successes, could be on the radar for a summer move if opportunities begin to dry up following the arrival of Kylian Mbappé. Earlier this year, Premier League giants Arsenal were linked with Rodrygo as part of their plans to bolster their attacking options. While those rumours have cooled in recent weeks, fresh reports suggest the interest hasn't completely faded. According to ESPN Brazil, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) have now joined the race and have already made contact with Rodrygo's camp. The French champions are looking to strengthen their frontline after Mbappé's departure and view Rodrygo as a high-potential addition. Vanderbilt's Blakes scores 27 points to lead US to AmeriCup gold and berth at World Cup next year

Associated Press SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) — Mikayla Blakes scored 27 points and the United States beat Brazil 92-84 to secure a berth in next year's World Cup in Germany. The U.S. team, made up of college players, trailed 66-65 heading into the fourth quarter. Blakes, who finished a stellar freshman season at Vanderbilt, hit a 3-pointer early in the period to give the Americans a 70-69 advantage and sparked a 9-0 run. South Carolina's Joyce Edwards capped the spurt with a layup that made it 76-69 with 6:37 left. Bella Nascimento hit two free throws to snap the drought and get the South American country within five. The Americans answered every run Brazil made down the stretch and when Damiris Dantas hit a 3-pointer with 40 seconds left to make it 89-84, Hannah Hidalgo, who finished with 16 points, hit three of four free throws down the stretch to seal the win. Dantas, who plays for the Indiana Fever, scored 35 points to lead Brazil. Nascimento had 24 points and Kamilla Cardoso added 19. The rest of the Brazilian team scored six points. The U.S. trailed 47-45 at the half despite Blakes scoring 17 points in the opening two quarters. The Americans won the AmeriCup in 2019 and 2021, but lost to Brazil in the gold medal game in 2023. The start of the game was delayed as the bronze medal game between Canada and Argentina went to double overtime. The Canadians won 76-75 on a layup by Michigan star Syla Swords with 1.4 seconds left. ___ AP sports:
