Five forest dept teams in Saranda to rescue wounded jumbo

Jamshedpur: Forest officials on Thursday pressed five teams to attend to a six-year-old wounded elephant that was sighted in Maoist-hit Saranda forest division of West Singhbhum.
Divisional forest officer (DFO) Aviroop Sinha said, "The elephant sustained an injury to its left leg and is experiencing difficulty walking. Teams are at the spot to rescue the elephant, examine the cause of the wound and administer treatment to it. A team from Odisha has also reached the area."
A few locals claimed that the injury could be due to an IED blast.
Refuting these claims, the DFO added, "Prima facie, there isn't any concrete evidence to conclude that the would is the result of an IED blast. The elephant got injured probably on June 28. It walked into our jurisdiction on Wednesday."
Earlier, Saranda forest officials deployed a drone to locate the elephant. The elephant was spotted pouring water on the wound while standing in the waterlogged field in the Digha area of the forest, he added.

An official statement earlier said that Gadchiroli Police, in coordination with the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), arrested a most-wanted Maoist commander during a joint operation on June 27. The arrested individual, identified as Ankal alias Mannu Sulge Pallo, had a bounty of 6 lakh announced by the Maharashtra government. Earlier, the Union Home Minister had said that freeing the country from Naxalism by March 2026 under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi would be one of the most significant achievements since Independence. He said, 'When the history of the eradication of Naxalism is written, the sacrifice, devotion, and hard work of our security forces will be inscribed in golden letters.'(ANI)

Removing IEDs top priority of security forces in Saranda: IG
Ranchi: Improvised explosive devices (IED) have emerged as the biggest challenge to security forces involved in anti-Maoist operations in the forest areas of Saranda and other parts of West Singhbhum. With the toll and injuries caused by IED blasts rising, police have launched special operations to detect and seize the devices. Police said it seized 41 IEDs, 4,000kg explosives, 18,000 detonators, and 34 gelatine sticks from different parts of the district in the past three months in the special search operations. Among the seized materials is 3,811kg explosives, which were a part of the 5,000kg looted from Odisha's Sundargarh on May 27. IG (South Chhotanagpur) Manoj Kaushik said, "The recovery of IEDs has become the top priority of security forces in the district. The looted explosives in Sundargarh were prime materials which could have been converted into IEDs by merely inserting detonators. The existence of large cache of explosives with Maoists is a major threat to safety of police personnel." "IEDs slowed down our operations in the past few months. Civilians are also becoming targets," he said. CRPF sub-inspector Sunil Kumar Mandal and assistant sub-inspector Satyawan Kumar Singh were martyred while six personnel were injured in IED blasts triggered by Maoists in Saranda this year. Saranda forest and its adjoining areas remain the last Maoist bastion in the state. Key Maoist leaders, including politburo member Misir Besra and central committee member Anal are hiding in the area.

NIA files supplementary chargesheet against Maoist ultra
Ranchi: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Thursday filed a supplementary chargesheet before the special court in Ranchi against a Maoist on charges of handling arms, extorting money, and harbouring rebels of the banned terror organisation. In a press statement, the NIA said, "Rajesh Deogam, a resident of West Singhbhum district, was charged under various sections of the IPC, the Arms Act, the Explosives Substances Act, and the UA(P) Act." "A case was registered by the local police against five persons in connection with the recovery of huge amount of money and various incriminating materials pertaining to key Maoist member Misir Besra in March 2024. The NIA, which took over the probe in July 2024, found that Deogam had been actively supporting the criminal conspiracy of the Maoists to commit terror acts, organise meetings, and extort money from contractors and traders," the NIA stated. Disclosures by Deogam had led to the seizure of gelatine sticks, Rs 10,50,000 in cash, walkie-talkie, tablet, power bank, radio set, extortion demand receipts, and other incriminating materials, the statement added.
