
How to prepare your teenager for a safe post-Leaving Cert holiday
All of this worry is natural, according to psychologist Dr Malie Coyne, but it is also important for adults to instil responsibility in to their newly independent children, she says.
'It is normal for parents to worry, but it is also a rite of passage for young people to want to go on holiday with their friends,' Dr Coyne says.
'Hopefully, parents will have been building open relationships with their kids throughout their lives and will have already imparted sensible advice and used everyday opportunities to talk about safety and how, on a night out or trip away, to never leave their friends and always stick together. As the mother of daughters, I suppose I worry that they are more vulnerable, but the same also applies to guys, so never leaving your friends is crucial.
'Also, I would encourage parents to have agreed with their teenagers to have regular check-ins, whether that is by text or call, as this can help to maintain a sense of security,' Dr Coyne says. 'So, before they jet off, I would encourage parents to say what they expect of them. I would be telling mine to keep in contact, put on sun cream every day, drink lots of water, both during the day and when out drinking; also make sure to eat if drinking alcohol, always stay with friends, and never go off with someone they don't know.
'It's a good idea to be open in conversation with them, to talk about potential risks regarding alcohol, unsafe situations, and peer pressure. For example, ask them what they would do if someone wanted them to do 10 shots or take a certain substance. Talk to them about all of these things and make sure they know about setting boundaries and recognising warning signs.'
Most teens will have had some independence, but every parent will have different expectations, so 'there is no hard and fast rule' on what they should and shouldn't do.

'You know your child best, so any agreement you have in place will be based on your own situation,' Dr Coyne says. 'Parents should be able to trust the values they have instilled from the beginning and see that experiences like going on holiday with friends can be opportunities for growth.
'And while they might not want them to go to certain destinations, they can agree on somewhere that they believe is safer or closer. It's also important for parents to know what hotel they will be staying in and that they have medical insurance and travel documents, which are up to date.
'And if they really don't feel that their teen is ready or mature enough to embark on an independent trip with friends, then maybe a compromise can be reached where they can do something different with friends or have a family trip away and that there may be the possibility of going next year.'
No matter how old you are when travelling, being prepared is key as it is always important to have everything in place to prevent any mishaps.
A spokesperson for the HSE says that along with passports and tickets, holidaymakers should have applied for their European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) and it must be in date, because should any accidents or health issues occur, it will help with reduced cost.
They also advise being safe in the sun by staying in the shade when it's hottest, wearing sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher, and always putting on a hat and sunglasses when out and about.
And while everyone wants to let their hair down on holiday, it is vital to keep your wits about you.
'Alcohol lowers your inhibitions, which can result in you doing things you usually wouldn't do,' the spokesperson says. 'While some people think this will give them more confidence, it can also mean that you might do something you later regret. Everyone reacts differently to alcohol, so what works for your friends might not work for you, so look after yourself and your friends, and make the best decision that suits how you want to celebrate, while staying safe.
'But even if you're not drinking alcohol, it's important not to leave your drink unattended and not to accept any drinks from strangers. Stay with your friends and agree on a meeting point if one of you gets separated from the group. And make sure that your phone is fully charged, so you can contact friends, family, or emergency services if something happens.'
Along with being sensible around alcohol consumption by ordering smaller and lower-strength drinks and by eating well before going out, the HSE also advises young people to be very careful about drugs.
'It's always safer not to use drugs. Some people may be at greater risk, due to personal factors, such as their physical or mental health status, which is unique to them,' says the spokesperson. 'So, avoid use if you have underlying conditions, mental health concerns, a family history of mental health concerns, or if you are feeling low, depressed, or anxious.
'This can increase the risks for you.
'Also, be in the know and research and stay up to date with drug market trends, avoid using drugs in new settings, and have a friend you trust with you. If taking something, pace yourself and leave time between uses. If you don't react as expected, don't take any more, and avoid using with other drugs. This includes with alcohol and prescription medication. Mixing drugs increases risks and can be unpredictable.
'And, don't be afraid to get medical help if you, or a friend, become unwell or feel suicidal after using drugs. So, when in doubt, get it checked out.'

'No English food' at hotel gran fuming after manager's response
A hotel manager in Corfu has refuted claims by a 69-year-old British grandmother, Susan Edwards, that she had the "worst holiday ever" due to a lack of English food at the Lido Corfu Sun Hotel. Manager Makis Triantafyllos of the hotel countered that Edwards had deliberately "fabricated complaints" in a bid to secure compensation. Susan had stayed at the hotel with her family for a seven-night all-inclusive Greek holiday, which began on May 12. She complained that the hotel was "horrendous from the minute (they) got there." Makis told the Sun: "From the very beginning of her stay, (Susan) demonstrated clear intent to fabricate complaints in pursuit of financial compensation, going as far as to complain about the weather." According to the manager, Susan asked the question, "Why is it raining?" to the staff. He added that when they attempted to address her concerns, she responded with a "sarcastic and dismissive" attitude, reports the Daily Star. Defending the hotel's culinary offerings, Makis described the food as "generous and diverse, offering fresh salads, fruits, hot and cold dishes daily". He argued that Susan's account was "entirely false and disrespectful to our culinary staff", stating that the hotel offers "world-renowned and beloved Mediterranean cuisine" as well as tailored options for guests, including those from the UK. However, Susan had claimed that her experience at the hotel had been subpar due to the absence of English food, which had ruined her holiday. Susan was miffed when, as she claims, the hotel wouldn't give her a second room card for her daughter to use while she 'had a lie down', allegedly being told: "No, too expensive." Makis, on the other hand, remembers things differently. He insists Susan did receive an additional room key but it was "revoked after it was used solely to keep the electricity running - leaving the air conditioning on 24 hours a day, even with open windows and the room unoccupied." He justified the decision by stating that such actions "violates our sustainability and energy policies". Upon their arrival at the Sun Hotel, Susan and her group were eager for a bite to eat. However, after struggling up a steep ramp to the reception, Susan was disappointed to find that the anticipated pool-side snacks amounted to just a "one-inch square of baklava". Her dissatisfaction with the food escalated the next morning when she discovered there was "no English food" available. Describing the breakfast options, Susan said: "On a morning you could have toast, a hard boiled egg, or something in sauce. She expressed her frustration, saying: "It was all-inclusive, £750 (€870) each we paid and there was no food we could eat and we couldn't have anything to drink. I have to be careful because I have ulcerative colitis so there's certain things I can't eat. "The all inclusive drinks were wine, lager, ouzo, or brandy. Yes, there were soft drinks, but we had to pay €1.50 for water."

Irish woman left with permanently red nose from sunburn: 'People think I'm sick'
A woman with a mystery condition that causes her nose to go red – with strangers constantly asking if she's sick – says doctors have no idea why it happens. Jessica McGirr first spotted the colour change five years ago when she was sunburnt during a holiday in Tenerife. But while the rest of her skin recovered, her nose did not. She says the bizarre situation is destroying her self-confidence and has seriously impacted her life with the 24-year-old never leaving the house without makeup and often suffering unwanted comments. 'The redness has ruined my self-confidence and I now wear makeup every day to hide it,' Jessica, originally from Ireland but who currently lives in New York, told NeedToKnow. 'I wouldn't go out in public with my red nose as I get many comments from strangers asking me what's wrong with my nose or asking if I am sick. 'Strangers are very open to questioning me about my nose and pointing it out, but I don't think if it was a birthmark I would get as many comments about it. No diagnosis has been made which is very frustrating because I wish I knew why this happened and if there could be a cure.' Jessica was on a boat trip on the Spanish island when she nodded off under the blazing sun without any sunscreen on. She spent around four hours exposed to strong UV rays and when she woke up, she had a bright red nose. The 30-year-old said the initial burn took about a week to go down. But two weeks later, her nose was still red and sore. It later became rough, inflamed and even started bleeding and scabbing. Now more than five years later, Jessica's nose is still red. She said: 'The initial blistering took about a week to go away but after two weeks, when my nose was still red, I got concerned. 'The skin on my nose was very textured and would often bleed and scab. For the first three years after the burn, my nose was very inflamed. It is more calm at the moment. It's still very red but the texture is smoother.' Jessica has seen three different doctors about her nose. She said: 'I was prescribed a few different creams at first, then I was prescribed medication for acne but neither of those worked. 'I was recommended to go to a skin clinic and get laser, so I got four sessions of intense pulsed light therapy but saw no results. I've had visual skin evaluations and blood tests but no doctor ever gave me a diagnosis. They denied it being rosacea due to it only being on my nose and it staying consistently red.' Jessica claims she hasn't been treated seriously and some doctors have simply told her to avoid spicy foods. She said: 'I feel very let down by the healthcare system at home as no doctor ever seemed to care or wanted to refer me to a specialist. I don't do any treatments or use any creams at the moment and I've never noticed an improvement with treatment. I now wear factor 50 sunscreen every day.' Jessica refuses to go outside without makeup and uses heavy concealer to cover the redness. She added: 'I would love to seek further help. 'However, to me, it feels like I am throwing money away as you have to pay so much for skin consultations just for them to not be able to help you. 'If I knew a treatment would work, I would love to try it.'
