Rajesh: An actor who could traverse the arc of emotions

The Hindu29-05-2025
Actor Rajesh, who passed away on Thursday (May 29, 2025), had a dignified presence. His roles were rooted in reality and devoid of the frills associated with celluloid. In life, he could be many things, actor, dubbing artiste, author, teacher, YouTuber, and builder. And he left an imprint in all these fields.
When Tamil cinema moved from the MGR-Sivaji Ganesan era and stepped into the decades shaped by Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan from the late 1970s and early 1980s, Rajesh carved his own unique space. He could be the everyday man, your neighbour, the friendly officer, the warm villager, and to every role, he lent a depth.
In a tight frame with the camera just focused on his face, he could hold attention with nuanced expressions through eyes that conveyed a lot. Rajesh could traverse the whole arc, from infinite sadness to simmering anger.
Be it Achamillai Achamillai or Andha Ezhu Naatkal, the actor displayed a staggering range. In the former, he was an idealist losing his way in the cut and thrust of politics, and remained unapologetic about it. In the latter, he is this endearing husband trying to help his wife get back to her former lover.
If self-obsession defined one role, the second one was all about imminent sacrifice even if Andha Ezhu Naatkal, one of Mani Ratnam's favourite screenplays, opted for a safe climax. Many viewers would remember the tapestry of this K. Bhagyaraj film, high on humour and pathos.
A particular scene marinated in sorrow still pulls the audience due to its innate irony. Bhagyaraj, the music composer, is creating a tune for a scene in which the hero's mother passes away and in reality, Rajesh, who is narrating the story, had recently lost his mother too.
Something triggers, grief strikes and Rajesh breaks down, and Bhagyaraj presumes that it is the effect of his music. That moment when Rajesh tries to restrain himself and then completely gives himself up to an all-consuming sadness, is a fine vignette of acting.
Philosophical streak
As years passed, he started doing supporting roles, and also forged an equation with Kamal, and was seen in the star's movies like Mahanadhi. An interview with Rajesh meant that diverse threads would crop up, be it films, literature, politics, atheism, and even astrology.
If there was a philosophical streak in him, equally there was a financial angle too, and it was no surprise when he forayed into the real-estate sector. There was an air of pragmatism to him, one that was evident in his roles and the way he dealt with life.
Much before Rajkiran and a few others got into the zone of actors offering relatability on screen, it was Rajesh, who walked that tightrope in an arena that was supposed to be surreal and dream-like. As Rajesh departs after 75 summers, the creative space in Tamil will be poorer.

Tamil film Thalaivan Thalaivii has emerged HIT. The four-day running total at the Indian box office stands at Rs. 31.50 crore. It is projected to gross Rs. 42 crore in its first week and will surpass Rs. 50 crore in its second weekend. The Day Wise Box Office Collection of Thalaivan Thalaivii in India are as follows: The film has performed best in the home territory of Tamil Nadu with a good showing in Karnataka. In Tamil Nadu, the film opened to Rs. 5.50 crore on Friday and then saw a big jump on Saturday, crossing Rs. 8 crore. On Sunday, it came close to double digits with Rs. 9.50 crore approx. The Monday hold was superb with Rs. 4 crore, taking its total gross in the state over Rs. 27 crore. The target for the film will be to hit Rs. 50 crore in the state, which seems doable. That will make it the biggest grosser for Vijay Sethupathi in the state, for a film he is in the lead. The Territorial Breakdown for Thalaivan Thalaivii is as follows: This year has seen some small and medium films emerge HITs for the Tamil film industry, but a mega grosser remains missing. There was Good Bad Ugly, which did well, but expectations were for more. The wait will likely end in two weeks when Thalaivar comes with Coolie, which is a box office volcano set to erupt.

"In the last couple of months, I have spent some time with Anirudh. I came down to Chennai, chilled with him and his boys in the studio. We went and played some pickle ball, listened to some music. Bakaiti actor Rajesh Tailang: Audiences had appetite for new content but weren't served that

There was a time when visiting movie theatres was considered to be the ultimate viewing experience. A few years into it, OTT became the next big thing. Back when theatres thrived, there was superstar culture, where people would spend money to watch superstars the most on the big screen. Although other actors got recognition, nobody quite reached the level that superstars did. During his exclusive chat with OTTplay, Rajesh Tailang, who achieved fame with OTT shows (soon to be seen as the male lead in Bakaiti), discussed how the game changed for him, along with many of his peers, with the introduction of OTT. Rajesh Tailang in Bakaiti 'OTT opened up a lot of opportunities, not just for actors' When asked if OTT opened up a lot of opportunities for many actors to be recognized as versatile characters nonetheless, Rajesh simply agreed and said that it served as a major place of recognition beyond just actors. 'OTT opened up a lot of opportunities, not only for actors but every department of filmmaking. A lot of DOPs didn't find good work, and that held true for directors, writers and producers too,' he shared. For the uninitiated, Rajesh is a director and writer apart from being an actor. Although he has worked majorly in theatre, and confessed to going back to his roots when the going got tough, he has also written and directed various short films, along with writing for the TV series, Chand Pe Chai. Ask him how he earned a living when not acting, Rajesh said, 'I actually went back to theatre. I chose not to act because I kept getting offered the same kind of role and wanted to do something different. So, it was my choice to not work in the industry. I came back when I got good roles again.' 'We talk about actors because they appear in front of us, but everybody got a good opportunity thanks to OTT' Even though OTT might not be in the best place now with various seasons getting scrapped, there was a time when it provided a platform to everyone. Rajesh agrees about the same, while referring to how only actors get noticed because they are in front of the screen, but OTT provided everyone an equal opportunity and brought the best of talent to the fore. 'People from every department got various opportunities because of OTT, not just actors. We can talk about actors because they appear in front of us. You are talking to me about actors because I am predominantly an actor, but everyone has got good opportunities,' the Bakaiti's lead actor said. 'Audiences had an appetite for good content but were not served that' One also cannot deny how thanks to the rise of OTT, especially at the peak of COVID-19 and its imminent lockdown, the audiences were exposed to world cinema. They got an opportunity to explore content from different states within India and across the globe. This, Rajesh points out, helped the audiences find hidden gems and talented artists they might have otherwise not known about. 'The audiences also got an opportunity to watch different kinds of content. They were also limited to the same kind of films and TV serials. Even if the audiences would want to, and there was an appetite for new content but they were not served that,' Rajesh said. The actor, who has worked on OTT shows like Mirzapur, Rangbaaz and Delhi Crime, will be back for Bakaiti. Before the release of Delhi Crime season 2, one can watch Rajesh Tailang in Bakaiti that will stream on Zee5 via OTTplay Premium from August 1, 2025.
